After Seeing Another Company lose their rig recently to a front tire blowing out, I decided to check the date on ours.(Brought back memories)
That showed me they were 8 years old even though they had great tread, I felt it was worth the investment.
I'm a huge stickler for preventing possible problems before they arise.
We have also seen the bad side of a rig flipping, going in debt, taking 8 years to recover (because insurance will try their best NOT to pay out on Drilling Rig Accidents).
Believe it or not, they think 2 year old front tires should be replaced regardless of low mileage.
There are so many "clauses"... when you insure a million dollar truck.
I was only 13 when that happened, but I saw the impact it had on my father & our life at home. (It was my father's 1st new rig that was only 18 months old)
So, learning from an early age up until the present day, I like to keep the important parts of our equipment in tip-top shape.

Our weather forecast in Fort Worth, Tx - last night was for 20% spotty rain showers. About 2 o'clock in the morning, we had a full blown thunderstorm and wind gusts up to 60 mph. Steer tires on a truck are top priority. The other tires have a backup - the steer tires do not. Tires do have a time limit on them no matter what shape they appear to be in. Seven years is a pretty long time for a truck tire. -- One thing to remember is that all tires have the month and year they were made in the manufacturer's code on the sidewall. The last four digits will be the week the tire was made and the year. So, 1223 would indicate that the tire was made in the 12th week of 2023.

Next time seat the bead laying the wheel over a 5 gallon bucket, it will seat evenly. standing up can be off an 1/8 of an inch. Have you ever thought about rock tires?
@jasonmorehouse3756
@jasonmorehouse3756 Ай бұрын
You always see your bead standing up. Not laying down. This is the exact reason why the safety cage is made from inflating. A tire are vertical, not horizontal. Both beads seat evenly that way. Not to mention that when laying horizontal most of the time, you'll have to use a bead blaster to get the tire to take air. When standing vertical, they'll usually take air on their own without a blaster needed.

I am watching you change the tire. I wonder why you do not load the tires into a pickup and run them down to a tire shop? The driver and tire shop mechanic could have done it quicker. I know you can do it, but considering your labor costs, it would have been a wash in actual cost. This way, you could have been doing something more valuable with your time. I also wonder about balancing the tires? but I think that is not a thing for the bigger tires. I take my lawn tractor and wheelbarrow tires to my mechanic. When these go flat, I put an intertube in them. My mechanic does all that. In my case, it is generally after hours when he is playing with his race car.

On commercial trucks it depends on the company. Some do and some don't. My company balances the steer tires out by setting the radial run out when the wheel is mounted on the hub. On a truck like this with the distances and speeds they are going they won't feel any difference. I have worked on commercial trucks for over 25 years and the argument to balance or not goes back longer than that.

Erosion aka River wear is common on slow wearing free rolling tires on rigs like this. It's a non issue and tire makers say the tires are still fit for service, but being 7 years old and how important this piece of equipment is to the company as well as how long it would take to replace it's smart not to let them get too old.

@toshihitsu1989
@toshihitsu1989 Ай бұрын
Most of the time tires need to be replaced after about 5 years. You can probably push it to 7 years. The problem with tires is the formulation that they use tends to break down after about 5 years. So you'll start getting rubber rot and deterioration. Even in your cars and trucks. If they have a spare tire you better check those. Even if they're in the dark and the like. Just over time the compounds just start breaking down in the tire so it's just a good idea and practice after about 5 to 7 years to replace the tire no matter what the tread depth that's is on the tire.
@billping2633
@billping2633 Ай бұрын
Commercial tires are a little bit different. My company is like most. We run tires for 7 years and no more than 2 recaps. It's against DOT rules to use recapped tires for steers. They can only be used on the drive axles and on trailers. When steer tires get worn out as long as there is no damage to the sidewalls of the belts they are retreded and reused. It's a lot less expensive to recap and reuse tires than to buy new ones.

Can you tell me if I need a 10-2 wire instead of a 12-2 wire. Will a 12-2 wire which I already bought cause any issues down the road? I'd rather take the loss now and buy the correct wire than not but just wanted to check with you. Thanks so much in advance. :)

Bit off topic, but I want to get this question in on your latest video… Why do you have personal shovelling out the tailings as the drilling progresses? It looks awkward to do and ineffective. Why aren’t there mechanical sweeps to push aside what comes out of the bore hole? It would then be easier for those to shovel aside. I’m a new subscriber to your channel. Very impressed with your approach to problems solving. Looks like loads of fun too. Cheers!! 🇨🇦

You're right about the age of the rubber. The Dunlops on my Harley turned 8 years old this year with minimal apparent wear. Coming home from work on the freeway early last June, a big chunk of rubber came away from the side wall on the rear tire. At 70mph! All I heard was a loud bang but made it home without incident. The bike's been put up for the summer because of it and the darn tire is STILL holding air. I saved up for new tires ($540 for the pair!) and recently purchased them. Now, if only this heat (AZ) will abate so I can replace them. I'm 67 years old so I can't work in this heat!
