Welcome to Sam Shutt Farming, daily life on the Hill farm
This is Sam and Oliver plus 5 children farming beef sucklers and sheep in the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border area.
We are first-generation farmers, and we've had no help at all to get to where we are now. We are here to show you our life and what we do. I am also here to show new entrance that it is possible to start from scratch. Being strong-willed, determined, and a lot of hard work, you can do it.
We are both from farming background I grew up on a family dairy farm. Milking from a very young age.Working for my uncle when i left school. I've learnt everything from him and grown ever since. I met Oliver when I was 16 he was 15 We started with a few sheep when we met and have built up over the 16 years to were we are now. We took on a 500 acre hill farm in 2019 currently 5 years into the tenancy.

Great video Sam, i have just put in two long sessions on the wrapper, the same breed as yours but the high speed twin spool model, many Ibuprofin and Co codamol called for stiff neck and shoulders. One of the places was steep hilly land, so to help keep things safe from runaway bales i set them up tin can style up the hill rather than rolling them off the back, all though it does not work every time, and up here we tend to use bale squeeze handlers, being on their ends would not suit your handling system. With respect to the Rashs, one of the hill places i was shepherd on had huge areas of them, so they were cut or burnt on a regular basis to keep them lush and green so that in the winter quite often they were the only thing showing above the snow and were regarded as a good "bite" for the ewes. The land you are working on is much wetter than what we have here at the moment. All the best.

Sam where do you get your en e rgy from,and you only after having a baby.Beautiful countryside but tough farming land especially this year with all the rain ground still exceptionally wet with you I could see the wheel tracks in the field filling with water and it a hilly field great work to get the silage off it you Oliver and Peter really work hard.

Your a great lady to be out working farm machinery so soon after having a baby! Your machinery looks clean and tidy it’s a credit to you and Oliver ! , we bought a cheap fusion 2 a couple of years ago and we think it’s a great job because it reduces work but you also have the problem of bales rolling on bankey fields , we are in Southern Ireland and we haven’t had the wet weather that you seem to have had and fields are nice and sound and we can load big trailers with 20 bales and cross fields without making marks . Second cut will be late here because growth is poor .

another good video sam. bet those bales were heavy. loved seeing the steam train. i couldn't help but have a laugh at the bales rollin down the hill.. we got a lot of steep fields so it's something we got to be carefull of aswell. i'm like you sam i haven't got many friends either just a couple of imaginary friends that i sometimes have a conversation with😃😃

You don't need to buy so many snacks and junk food. No wonder the bill is so high. For yoghurt, buy the big tubs of plain yoghurt and bags of frozen fruit. Make up individual portions from this. One example.
