Really nice bikes! Nice to see the industry introducing so many small displacement bikes. Having had many many bikes over the last 20 years, It is fantastic to see the quality of choices we now have with lighter bikes. Gone is my GS1200, Triumph Explorer, Harley Fatboy... all great bikes but so heavy to push around the garage or to pick up, (if ever down) Replaced with KTM 390 Adventure, Royal Enfield 350 Classic, and can’t wait to see this new Triumph 400 Scrambler at dealership and if lucky, in the garage with other small bikes above. You can actually buy all 3 for the price of one new large displacement Adventure bike. Thank you Triumph for bringing us these bikes. Well done! BTW, don’t market as “beginner bikes” ... lots of very experience riders like myself are just becoming WISER motorcyclist.

@THUGPUTIN

I don't think they compete with bmw(BMW G310 barely sells because it's rebadged tvs)... Knowing how aggressively harley davidson is giving info on their 440x bike right when bajaj gave update on these bikes and harley davidson x440 is launching July 4,its safe to say that these directly compete with harley davidson and new gen ktm 390... Apparently RE has put all of it's engineering team under the new 450cc 40bhp liquid cooled singles and it's rumored to be the most advanced RE yet... it's developed by RE UK team who worked for 650 series too... There's also report that it will replace the current himalayan and RE launched scram 411 just to sale/cleanup all the himalayan inventory... They can't price it above ktm 390 too because Yamaha is bringing in r3/mt03 this year... KTM and RE are dominant in this price range... This can take huge sales from ktm if priced right.. Competition in this segment is crazy right now... 300cc to 400cc is also becoming the like 150cc in India...

Same goes to bmw and tvs who share their engine and frame with each other... Did you know, bajaj dominar 400 are assembled in kawasaki plant in phillipines...does that make Bajaj dominar a rebadged kawasaki? Nope... They don't share anything and same goes to triumph.. Even the new harley davidson x440 is not a rebadged hero.. They are just using the hero motorcorp plant and service network...

Having ridden the Z400 recently i have to say it really impressed. The chassis was absolutely brilliant, compliant but rock solid secure. The engine too was a peach and felt peppy without being buzzy. My fear, just like with the 390, when you go searching for higher BHP in a single you tend to lose the traditional advantages of the single but without ever getting near the BHP of a twin. On the other hand if it's just a styling thing, sure, the Triumph will mop up.

The issue is not that it is made in India more that Triumph presents itself as being a premium British brand especially with the prominent use of the Union Jack flag on the tank. They could equally be honest and have the Indian flag on the tank if they want to display any type of nationalist symbol. Honda is now an international brand and we all accept their bikes are made in many countries. Neither my Japanese Honda nor my Honda from Thailand have any nationalistic symbols on them which is good.

These bikes look bloody awful. Plus the way that they've been reviewed here didn't exactly do them any favours. They look like they've been made by Lexmoto or even Sinnis and there is nothing initially wrong with that, until you look at the price tag on these bikes, then the whole concept of these bikes crumbles into dust. These bikes will be built in India for the India/Asian market, but guess what? They don't want the over complication of water cooling on a bike of this size. They want something that they already have, the ease of maintaining an air cooled unit (Royal Enfield) at a price they can afford. (also Royal Enfield). So it's a non starter as a way into their market place. If these machines were air cooled single cylinder bikes, built in China and sold at a price that reflected these factors, then it might well have been the success story that Triumph obviously need so very badly.

Those Metzelers are a perfect tire choice for many bikes regardless of if they’re a sports oriented bike or not. Had the M7s on my SV650 and they got phenomenal mileage and had incredible cold and wet grip only moved to the Rosso’s because Metzler rubber gets a bit greasy once you track on a hot day or are riding the twisties in 110+° temps. Can imagine on a much lighter less powerful bike the wear difference between a sports tire of the M9’s type and a sport touring tire is minimal.

Is it just me or do others think the videos showing the bikes being ridden look likes the people have never ridden a bike before. I wonder if triumph did this intentionally to appeal to new inexperienced riders. I do hope the engine is a little more laid back than the 390 duke.

Yes that’s exactly what I was thinking. Either inexperienced or dare I say it (truly no offence intended) female riders, a lot of whom in my opinion tend to sit slightly awkwardly no doubt due to differences in physical stature.

I like the Scrambler . Gravel roads that aren’t ideal would be ideal. I’d add a rack with a top box for stowing helmet,wet weather gear,shopping items. If the performance is good enough, owners will save a lot on insurance,registration,and servicing costs. If it’s not,there’s always the Speed Twin.

On the topic of the dash, I definitely prefer to have double clocks, like on the Bonneville. But if its going to be single clock like here and on Street Twin/Scrambler then I do at least like to have analogue speedometer, which this has, and I like that it has all the info you need in that sidescreen too. So very well done here in my opinion, could only have been improved if they had done double clocks like for instance the Kawasaki Z650RS. For me, having both tacho and speedometer in digital format removes some of the sensation of progress somehow, I like to see the needle move up the range.

Love it. The new $6K is a 400cc, used to be the 600cc, those are now $8K. Inflation. For a $8K you could get a used Mazda Miata, just as much fun and more usability. Life keeps on evolving.

USD forks have more unsprung mass because the the wheel, the spindle, the brake disc and caliper and the steel tubes move, With right way up forks the steel tubes are static and the fork sliders move (usually aluminium and usually incorporating the caliper mounts). The steel tubes are much heavier than the fork sliders

The bike looks good up until you look it broadside. The front end seems to be a lot lower than the back which makes it look like a cafe racer bike but with high handlebar. It's just a personal preference though, I like how they nailed it with the street scrambler and scrambler 1200 but here not so much. Nonetheless it's good to see a lower capacity scrambler in the market, I hope many manufacturers build more of these 400cc bikes

I hate how motorbike people talk. I'm not a new rider, my favourite displacements are 4-600. The Honda 500s are great bikes, CB300R was amazing. I love the XSR yamaha 700/900 but Honda released some bikes like this for the indiam market and i wished they would come to the UK (350cc) These seem perfect so i'll head to triumph and check them out. But small displacements aren't for beginners, they are serious bikes, remember the people who rode around the world on 125 spring seats? The long way ruined the adventure aspect of riding a motorbike for the industry. It's not an adventure to ride motorways up mountains in Europe. These smaller capacities bring that adventure back for me.
