I’m glad to see you wearing gloves more and more. My dad was a diesel mechanic for 40+ years. I heard the story many times about the days when he used the parts washer or had a lot of oil and grease on his hands. When he would go to bed at night, his hands would just throb from the chemicals. Some guys think it’s for the birds, but being around for your family is more important than being “cool” in front of others! Keep up the great content feller!

Your skin is not chemical proof, it's silly to think that sweat can come out yet nasty chemicals can't get in. People say they can't stand the feel of gloves, but it's an acquired taste. I wear nitrile gloves every day for 8 hours straight at work... you get used to it

My father passed away suddenly a couple of days ago eventhough he was almost 91, it was still a surprise to us all since he had just seen the Dr a couple of months ago and given a clean bill of health even at his age! Anyway my friend, I've been very upset and emotional since bcos unfortunately I'm unable to fly to California for his funeral or any other part of the process bcos I'm financially stressed and I can't afford the expensive round-trip flight from Manila Philippines to Los Angeles! I'm a retired police officer living full-time in the Philippines since 2018. Anyway, I got sidetracked! My point was that as usual, when I watch you and your videos, I always have a bug smile on my face, and I'm laughing out loud at your hilarious antics and dialogue. So just now, I'm watching this video and suddenly realised I was smiling ear to ear and laughing hard! Thanks to you, my dear friend. You managed to make me completely forget what's currently going on in my personal life, and wow, did I need some positivity, especially now! Thank you so much, Derek, for helping me to laugh and smile again even for just a little while, I know now that I'm going to be fine, thanks to you! Thank you, Derek, for all that you do to entertain all of us, teach us, and for making life at its worst, just a little better 😀 😊❤ I love you, your wife, and you'd kids! God bless always my dear friend 🧡 hopefully in the next few months or years, I can afford to travel back to California to at least visit my father's grave. Take care always!

This was one of my dream cars back in high school, I ended up with what I could afford an old '68 Fury III 4 door I think I paid $300 for back in '83. My grandfather owned a garage and over the summer and winter of '83-84 I rebuilt the 318, added dual exhaust, headers with a dump, a mild cam, had the crank turned/balanced, heads milled, seated the valves, replaced all rings/bearings/springs/seals/freeze plugs, got a junkyard transmission and hit the road. I went thru several of those transmissions as that thing was a huge heavy boat of a car which combined with my young foot meant they didn't last long. That old car was still being driven by my father all the way to the late '90's. It isn't as affordable as it used to be but it can still be done on a budget as Derrik repeatedly demonstrates. Find an old car you can turn some wrenches on and just enjoy it, again just as Derrik repeatedly says. Thanks Derrik and all involved for what you do creating this entertaining and educational content, even though you decry that fact, that's just a load of fun to watch. May He continue to bless you, yours and all those around you, Num 6:24-26...

@@thatcarguy2778believe it or not but they can be taught not to get on cars. Some cats don’t even like getting on them, and most of the time they do they don’t even scratch them in my experience, they just leave a paw print or two. There’s also things you can buy to deter them from getting on things you don’t want and they’ll learn quickly that they’re not supposed to be there. Their benefits far outweigh the chance they could get on a car. Just the smell of a cat keeps most pests and mice away and any that do push their luck should be dealt with by a good mouser. Then there’s the company and comedy they provide. You don’t think it’s something you want or need till you have it. After awhile you start to enjoy seeing the silly things they do, and if the kids or grandkids come in the shop to see ya, the cat will keep them entertained and keep them in your company longer so you get more time with em. My cats even stay out of my way pretty well when I’m doin serious work cause they don’t care for loud noises. After the noise stops and I sit in a chair for a few minutes here they come wanting a bite or some attention, and sometimes if I’m aggravated with a job I’m doing, their attention is a great way to forget about it for a few minutes and calm down. They’re great additions to any shop.

When I was a diesel mechanic, we would rebuild our turbos. Just remember on a turbo to always warm it up and cool it down. They will eat themselves up if you keep shutting the engine off immediately. Keep the oil changed and use what the turbo calls for. I like rotella. Been using it since the '70s. If it was mine I would install a pyrometer. Added visibility on what the turbo is doing.

Derrick - I found an unopened hose kit for 86-87 Grand National at a high end foreclosure home. Also found a door lock switch (brand new) and cam sensor setting tool, (electric box thing). Let me know if you want them. I will send them to your PO box. The original owner's Grand National is going for a crap ton. Also has a sweet split bumper camaro and El Camino.

I'm sure sorry to hear about your grampa's passing, Derek. He sounds like someone I'd be proud to know. He's definitely done his fair share to leave a mighty fine legacy behind him to carry on in the world and advocate for all that's substantial and good. To be able to have and keep his goin'-to-town rig, and keep it in fine condition, and feel good about driving it one day, has to be a real privilege. Good on ya! Keep up the OUTSTANDING work, and keep setting your own fine example!

It’s great when you fix something and it works. I was never much of a car guy but the last few years I’ve gotten inspired by Derek and a few others on the KZbin and doing a lot of wrenching in my garage. Me and my son just finished installing a new AC compressor, water pump, thermostat and belt in his ‘03 Wrangler. She blows frosty air now and runs way nicer. I saved myself a few grand in labor and we did it together. It was a nice feeling and my wife is happy she got her garage back. Thanks Derek!

So sorry to hear about the passing of your Granddad Derek. My condolences. So glad to see you keeping that 86 running. I’m glad to see the turbo worked out and it’s in good hands. I rebuilt that turbo a few years back and decided to put a larger turbo in my 87. So it’s sat around since. If you need any info on the GN you can reach out. I have a bunch of resources. You are right that they are so fun to drive. Good luck and great video!
