OK guys I just Downloaded the Blueprints and all I can say is I can't believe how simple this power hammer is. I don't think it could be made any more simple. I've been in manufacturing since 1975 and I've been looking in to building a power hammer for the last year and a half. I've looked at all the different types of power hammers and this design is the simplest I have found bar none. Also i think the the price for the blueprints is very reasonable. Hey Torbjorn! I haven't I will look. You can get it very sensitive even at 120psi but I can also change the psi to give me a wider control range. @@joshuadelisle If I converted the metric measurements into imperial, would I have issues with fitting it together or is there some wiggle room?? I feel the main road block for me would be the cost of steel, since it's still way out of my league right now, and the fact that I only have a 90 amp welder and I would assume I couldn't get a strong weld in such thick steel. Still really want to try it, though. Do you worry about that plate that is attached to the upper round and the piston? Is there a chance a weld could break in that point?
@joshuadelisle5 жыл бұрын
Hey! I've made two lots of measurements on the drawings to make it simple in metric and imperial for you lot across the pond. I'm not worried about the welds but 7018 electrodes would give it better tensile strength. I got my 200amp tig for just £200 and works a treat. Cheers J

@@joshuadelisle I use a flux core wire welder, but 200 isn't bad for a stick welder. Always thought about having one of each. Tig welders also look cool, and I always wondered how well those could be used to fix bad welds by remelting it to make it smoother. But that's fantastic you have both measurements!! When I can get the cash, I will definitely buy it. Would love to have it built by next year to show off to my grandfather. I did look into steel prices and it's really expensive. Over 400-500 dollars just for the solid rounds alone. I will try to find a local source, maybe they will be cheaper. I think you've made yourself a perfectly functional power hammer Josh. It's always a great feeling when a self built machine works as you'd hoped and it made me smile to see your enthusiasm. It'll obviously make a huge difference, they're such a huge time saver it isn't even funny, and unfortunately yes that's the difference between making money or not these days. Good on you bloke. I've made two hammers so far but neither were pneumatic, or for me even. They were both variations on the 'tyre' hammer design and I think Kevin Boys is still running one of them over at Surrey Docks. I've got a couple of questions about the pneumatic design: The valving seems to be a straight on or off system, either picking the ram up or pulling it down, so I'm guessing the only way to feather that is to switch the valving before it's completed a full stroke? Are you tapping the foot control rapidly when the ram is down to get the lighter blows? The other thing that struck me Is that knocking sound every now and then on the lifting stroke. Is that the piston topping out against a hard stop of some sort, either inside the cylinder itself or on the frame? I noticed when you didn't let the piston run a full cycle on the lift the camera didn't shake anywhere near as much as when you did. Feels like there's a lot of shock transmission going through the frame there. Personally, I'd try to run it without hitting that hard stop as much as I could to save wear and tear. Cheap replacement bits still aren't as cheap as no replacement bits eh? May I suggest making a hydraulic forging press from a log splitter for your next homebuilt machine? You'll have a full house then, or a full shed at least. :D
@joshuadelisle5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Ian! Yes tapping foot, if I go half through the valve I can get a very light blow by reducing the speed and can adjust the psi for more control range, it's very much like a drum kit. Knocking top is my first gremlin to kill, I'm thinking a rubber washer inside the ram maybe? Tire hammer was one I looked at but wanted it smaller and easier to build. Hydraulic press is one I would love but other than space it's lack of decent power for that, I'm on extension leads from the house still. Fuse hasn't blown yet and wires don't get too hot but can't have any serious power operations, the welder and compressor work off a blue 16amp plug and have to switch it over so they never run at the same time. I am thinking about a gas forge though on the outside of the shop with a hatch on the wall close to the side of the hammer? Thought that would keep excess heat and carbon monoxide outside. Cheers all the very best. J

Great build! Thanks for the detailed video. I'm curious, are you pressing the pedal for every stroke of the hammer? Do you adjust the impact strength by lowering air pressure?

I got a huge smile out of seeing your infectious, unbridled glee upon using your hammer. That hammer is a well designed piece of kit -- most designs seem to just throw mass and brute force at the problem. And some of the Frankenhammers that result are things I wouldn't want to even be in the same building with... Clyde
@joshuadelisle5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Clyde! I've just been optimising it further. It's such a little beast! Got rid of the top knock as the cylinder fully extends and increased the flow rate with bigger pipes. im hiding the pipes in the pillars too to make it super sleek. I think I'm going to powder coat it white to emphasize it's minimalism, though I know the moment I put my black hand on it I'll regret it.... Cheers J

Who doesn’t like and want a power hammer. I recently found some of your cancer laser cutting videos and then saw you forging legs for a table. Really like all the information you give and would it be possible to scale down the power hammer for a hobbyist even though yours is about as small as it t gets. I still have to say it’s an awesome hammer you made.
@joshuadelisle Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much. This power hammer design is pretty optimal for forging with, you can't really get it bigger without an industrial compressor and you wouldn't want it smaller as it wouldn't be enough. For something compact, cheap and easier to build do check out the 30T press I made recently. It's probably a better option for hobbyist jobs and upgradeable too. Cheers J

Look at wood gasifier also known as wood gasification I believe they're more efficient in Steam.
@joshuadelisle5 жыл бұрын

@nameloc10004 жыл бұрын
How is the gasifier producing the steam? If you can message me a link to an explanation I would be very greatful
@jonhunter87254 жыл бұрын
@@nameloc1000 gasifiers will produce excessive Steam if the wood chips contain more than 20% water and when the gasifier is in use and when the chips are under high heat and low oxygen the gases content will travel through the gasifier and most of the steam will condense to the cyclone and the radiator will help condense more of the steam back into water and the filter media example straw will also create more surface area for the steam to condense on. And when you get your gasifier operating properly the only byproduct from the wood gasifier will be activated carbon that has uses in itself

As a thirty year metal fabricator here in the USA I can say that is a beautiful piece of work. It fits the need without a load of extra waste. My one concern is the bearings, The side loads and stresses from a 1 to 200 lbs person skating is a far cry from what the shearing forces the pneumatics and steel might exert. But aside from that OUTSTANDING job. just needs some machine shop grey or green paint to fit right in amidst the other professional machines in a shop.

Just discovered this channel , you got an immediate subscriber. I wish I had the skills (and more importantly the testicular fortitude) needed to build something like this. I'm very definitely a hobbyist and will never need this for a business, but who wouldn't want their own power hammer? Especially one you can cuddle! This would fit perfectly in my forge (for forge read 'garage' Who needs to protect their car from the elements?) Really interesting that your employer is showing an interest in creating a commercial version. I hope they are willing to give you a decent kickback after designing it! You said under £2k for the finished product. Speaking only for myself if you could get a delivered price of £1500 I could be persuaded to put myself in debt and danger to own one of these if it had an attachment to anchor spring dies (sold seperately of course) and a catcher tray for the scale (slightly graded of course) with a tube to add the tube of your DeWalt industrial vacuum at the bottom for dust/scale extraction. Oh BTW I won't cuddle mine until after I install googly eyes just like Daniel did! (so cool that it was yours first!, even though I feel bad for you that you had to sell it) Oh and far as colour goes, paint it bright scarlet and call it Big Red One.
