Hey Johnny, I bought a Genmax 5500i Inverter Generator.. 2 1/2 yrs ago.. I kept up with the maintenance.. Until Hurricane Milton knocked out our power here in Central Florida last week. I was really really ready to use it to power my fridge, 2 deep freezers and some lights, a Flat screen TV, a fan and power up some phones for 36 hrs on and off. Checking not to overload.. but this a beast to handle our basic needs and being prepared. I was using the Champion 120/240 fat yellow extension outdoor cord wire and plug that had 4 outlets.. no more clutter with extension cords. I purchased at Home Depot, I saw it on KZbin that someone reviewed and recommended to use with the Genmax 5500i ..what luck ..! Perfect..! What a life saver..! Power Came Back 2 Days Ago.. I was the only home with a generator in my Townhouse Community on my block.. Why ? I took charge after losing all of my food in Hurricane Charlie where power was out for 2 weeks. Thanks to Genmax..! Thanks to you and your live saving videos..! God Bless..!

How big ? 10kw on natural gas? At that point you can just buy a standby generator for almost the same price
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends 7 ай бұрын
@paxrom1 its not the same price at all. After you include a permit, an electrician to hook it up and then get it certified by utilities then also have gas hooked up and trenched as the unit needs to be 20ft from main dwelling. Then gas company needs to approve hook up. Most generac gens that are hooked up are $12-$20k. Pending size of the unit. And it stays with the home and could take a month before it full turned on. I can wheel this out and fire it up right away. And can take with to the next home if I dont plan to stay.
@paxrom1
@paxrom1 7 ай бұрын
@@johnnysweekends actually that's not entirely correct, the "hook up" is about the same for both if you're not going with a ATS. Also manufacturer requirement just state 1.5 - 5 ft away from building and structures so not sure if your 20 ft is a local ordinance, NFPA 37 § 4.1. 4 also only requires 5ft. Also you could disconnect the unit and remove it. Labor and hook up is not refundable let's say. but that's true with both type. Anyways I just wanted to stir the pot...

I see Genmax is offering the 17 k inverter but one thing i think you need to have in your video is Propane usage, compared to gas and Natural gas, I have the duro max beast that is 12k tri fuel, I only run it on propane so I dont run into starting issues from sitting full of bad gas when i need it ,My Duro max 12 k will run for appx 3 hours on 1 grill tank , so I picked up some tanks that are double the size ,Now it can get me by for 5 to 6 hours at full load so this would be nice for people to know so they can figure out how many propane tanks to have on hand or how much gas to have in reserve when a storm or hurricane is possibly coming. I wish the Genmax had a in between size ,they jumped from ax10,5 inverter to 17,k inverter and for a lot of people a 10,5 is borderline to small but 17k is overkill, so a 13 k would be nice to see ,My 13 k powered my entire home for a week after a tornado a year ago, we ran it from 6 am till 9 pm daily with 0 issues,I ran my AC all day that doesnt have a soft start, 1 refrigerator, 1 freezer ,lights and other items . So for the limited times you may need a large generator, its worth its weight in gold as a investment to just sit, verses losing all your food in your refrigerator and freezer and putting in a claim to insurance, I know people who lost well over 1000 dollars in food but insurance wanted a list of food items they couldnt produce ,so their claims were not accepted, my generator paid for itself the first time I needed it and I will never be without 1 ,

@@GH-wt7ww I ran my 10500 on natural gas recently her in Ontario where natural gas is 18 cents a cubic meter. The generator takes 2 cubic meters at 50% load so that is on average about 36 cents an hour . Compare that to $5 per hour on gasoline and you soon save a huge amount on any kind of extended outage. I also bought a propane tank just to keep it around "just in case" but this new generator will NEVER be used with gasoline. My other 9 generators are much smaller and gas only and in situations where they are used, gas is more suitable, but NOT for home backup if natural gas is readily available. My total cost for everything was $2500 for the Generlink transfer switch and $3400 for the TMG 10500 (same as Genmax) for a total cost of half of a permanent standby unit.....

The question is if it makes sence to be able tu run the whole house at once. Most of the time you gonna be using maybe 1 or 2 kw so arount 10% of the rated capacity of this gen which will kill the fuel efficiency, hence you will need to store a lot more fuel compared to a smaller maybe 5kw generator, where you stil can use everytjing, just not at once.

@@johnnysweekends my concern is sufficiently low THD%. It’s not listed. Accordingly what say you to this: I want primary natural gas backup power. My home footprint is insufficient for a permanent 18KW Generac Standby solution, it must be portable. So I’m considering getting the Generac and converting it to portable by placing it on a roller system with a 1” natgas line ran from the back of my home to provide sufficient linefill to enable the generator to start after I wheel it out from my garage and manually switch my breaker to alternate power that will be fueled by this 1” line and this 18Kw Generac generator model? I know that it can truly be a whole house solution with no concern for sensitive electronics this way, and I can take it with me when I relocate to a different property in the future that can properly utilize the Generac generator as a permanent placement solution. Hello. Please clarify confirm. At 6:30 you say GENMAX is using engines that are NOT cast iron cylinder bore sleeved. That they are aluminum cylinder bores. Is this true?? Cast iron sleeved bores are a well developed technology that easily gives honed oil retention. Long life. Good adverse conditions wear life. Aluminum works only with superior thick wear plating. Still it seems only the very best of OEM's like Stihl, Husquvarna, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Shindowa can get this plating right. The Chinese replacement cylinder jugs for these engines are now known to be short life fails. I pull spark plugs and put a narrow magnet flex shaft pick up down to check for cylinder wall materials BEFORE I will commit to own and operate my generator and 4-stroke power equipments. So not an "all" Chinese engines as aluminum cylinder bores. Some. Many do have iron bore sleeves. All of my purchased, and used, made-in-China do have cast iron cylinder bores. Only in handheld 2-strokes will I use aluminum plated cylinders. And then only from 1st class known manufacturers. Steve Unruh

Genmax/dinking power uses aluminum bore in the small engines and medium. I dont know about the larger size units when you get to say the 7250 using a 312cc and the larger engine models. I need to confirm if they switch or not. Most any popular generator engine manufacturer uses aluminum bore. Honda no and Yamaha no on the larger units but i think the small units they switched but not sure. I would have to double check. But most others yes. But this can change from new model and size and more. Hard to keep up with what. You figure out of the smaller units 2000-3500 hours are probably your expected engine life. Some will get more some will get less, all depends how they are used and treated. Most people dont put that many hours on them. And if the cost is half or less of buying a couple other brands then you are ahead hours wise and down time if you are repairing others. There will always be premium brands and budget brands in any line of equipment.
@Wood-For-Power1
@Wood-For-Power1 9 ай бұрын
I do realize that there are different category of users with different life-use expectations. For the true off-grid living an inverter-generator can be from a 20 hours a day used Mini(needs to be quiet) to only 4 hours a day (can be noisy) as a poor solar-day battery bank supplemental. So they will put on min 240 to 7300 hours a year. And they are doing this real for 2-3-4 years on Harbor Freight 2000's thru 9500. With cast iron bore right down to the H.F. 2000 unit. I agree brands will place themselves in the market where they choose to be. I also have a combination of small four stroke air-cooled brands of equipments from 79.7cc to 600cc all with cast iron cylinder bores. Only one a H.F. 9500, for the deep well in fire seasons Grid shut offs. Oil changing frantic me with synthetics I get from a min 800 hours to a still running fine without oil consumption at ~2000+ hours usable life on these. Many are from cold hundreds to thousands of starts and warming up. That adds wear. Sorry. Obviously GEXMAX does not have an interest in this market users section. A shame the new series connectable would be the thing for deep well users. Propane sip norm. Ramp up for well pumping into a cistern or tank. I agree for the most part. I recommend buy Chinese clones, buy reasonable, buy three to be your own parts supplier. Thanks for the response. Steve unruh@@johnnysweekends

@Wood-For-Power1 are you sure the smaller predator 2000 watt unit is a cast iron or steel sleeve and not just bored aluminum ? Most of the small engines are. The predator uses a rato 80cc Yamaha clone. Which most 80cc are. But I never tore it down. I know aluminum is great for heat dissipation. I will have to dig deeper to see if the main Chinese engine manufacturers all do aluminum or cast/steel sleeves. Makes me wonder what the price difference is.

If these are largely all new EFI generators, does that mean they will be CARB compliant? This is a problem when you are in California, your generator selection is small because most generators are not CARB compliant. I would think EFI would make it a lot easier to get a CARB compliant certification. What I think would be very handy, and this is touched on elsewhere in the comments, are 24V only for smaller generators and 48V only for larger generators with a wired in automatic start function and tunable max voltage for battery charging. The idea is say you have a 24V battery system for a small inverter or a 48V off grid power system, when the batteries get low, the generator can be automatically started and then the generator will run and charge up the batteries. DC-DC conversions can be very efficient and cheap hardware wise when done right. Especially if control can be setup with an off-grid solar inverter, say through RS-485 and Genmax works with the off-grid inverter manufacturers on a standardized generator control protocol, this could be a great way to add generator backup to an off-grid system. This is for example there is no battery in the generator because say it is getting 48V from a battery bank running all of your stuff and normally listens for commands off of an RS-485 port while otherwise in standby mode. When the batteries get low, say on a cloudy day, the inverter commands the generator to start. Then as the generator is running, the inverter could decide say there is not that much demand right now, charge the batteries at a low rate and so the generator runs at a low, quiet pace, or say it is hot, muggy, and overcast, so the AC is cranking away, throttle up to a high power. As these off-grid inverters know exactly how much power is being used and how much power they need as well as exactly how much power they are getting off of solar panels and even have battery charge profiles for the time of day and can get specs off of everything on the RS-485 communication bus in order to make decisions on how exactly to do everything, they can precisely control the DC generator. For say a poor man's 24V setup, maybe the generator senses for a "low voltage charge" window that is programmable, kicks on if the voltage is in this window for more than a few seconds (so say a hard starting motor doesn't trip it), and then the throttle can be manually adjusted while charging to a set cut-off voltage. The idea being if you unplug the generator or the battery develops a fault, it will not try to charge anything. But if it is plugged in and everything checks out, it will kick on when the batteries get low using the 24V link for power to start the generator, maybe rev up if it senses the batteries are draining faster than they are being charged, but otherwise just cruise along with whatever preset throttle setting you set for it with it being adjustable while the generator is running. So say your load is low, the generator will quietly cruise along and charge things up. But say you put a heavy load on your 24V system, it will detect the voltage dropping and then start revving up until either it gets back to that voltage or it hits max throttle. As demand drops down and voltage sense says voltage is going up, it could throttle down until it hits the cruise throttle setting and then lets the voltage climb again while cruising. Then at some point it detects that the batteries are charged, maybe some time is given to balance the cells while at a constant voltage, and then the generator shuts off. So the generator is a little smart on its own and the attached battery - inverter setup is completely unaware that this generator is there. One extra thing to add is the generator will need a clock and "time of day" operation function. So say you don't want the generator to run in the dead of night or say you are camping at a national park, you need to be able to program the generator to run in certain windows and charge up the batteries so you can coast along on batteries outside of these charge windows. I think both of these modes of operation for DC only are important. One mode is you already have a smart device, say in your home or RV and it has the smarts to tell your generator exactly what it wants it to do. In this mode there is not much in the way of programming your generator because the smart inverter has all of the smarts to get its specs and then tell it what to do exactly. The other mode of operation is either you have a small stationary setup or a portable setup, the equipment you hook the generator to is not going to be "aware" of any generator, but you can set some parameters on the generator, say through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to an app on your phone or through a control interface on the generator, and the generator will get the job done. Of course you can have both in the same generator. It is just if you hook in an RS-485 cable, the generator reverts to being remotely controlled by a smart device and without the RS-485 link, the generator switches to using internal programming to make decisions on how it is going to run. While all of this may sound a bit wordy, in practice if a generator outfit can do this, I think it will be easy enough. One mode is you plug in an RS-485 cable and do the battery hookup and another smart device takes care of the rest. Maybe you even ask the solar inverter installer to configure in your generator for you and so you never even think about how it is done, it just works once they are done. In the other mode either you plug in some simple parameters on the generator for your batteries with the generator even having preset battery profiles, making it easy to get right and it runs in a 'simple' mode. Or you get out your smart phone, fire up an app, and do things like set generator run time windows and in general have full access to everything from the app. If you are doing this in your home, maybe you go over Wi-Fi, but out and about, you do this through Bluetooth. When you look at all of this, I think this could become very popular. There are all of these people who are either off grid or if they are on grid, they still want a generator backup while leveraging their solar and battery gear to allow the generator to be small and cost effective and will want DC for added efficiency and lower costs because they only need one DC-AC inverter. If you are off grid, you really don't want the generator running too much because they will wear out quickly and use tonnes of fuel, making things very pricey. This would be a way to slash run time even if you don't have solar panels. To charge the batteries, going DC-DC is a lot more efficient than DC to AC inverter to AC charger to DC charging, so direct DC-DC charging will use a lot less fuel. For off grid, this should allow for small generators, an efficient DC-DC conversation, control to make sure things are charged up and ready for a night with the generator off, and in general lower cost because you only have one DC-AC inverter. For a small emergency power backup system, instead of having a generator droning along all day long burning lots of fuel, you can pull out your portable battery-inverter setup, have it run off of batteries until the batteries get low, and then the DC generator kicks on and charges the batteries back up, shutting off again once the batteries are charged. Especially if you have no idea how long power will be out for, maybe you find the generator never needs to kick on because the outage was short enough, but if it goes on for days and days, you efficiently use your fuel as the generator only runs when it needs to. This will also be fewer oil changes and air filter cleanings needed in the middle of a prolonged outage because the generator is only running when it needs to with batteries taking care of the rest of the time. Plus if you do need to do maintenance in the middle of a prolonged outage, you just continue to run off of batteries while doing the maintenance on the generator. For camping, the generator can run on a schedule automatically in time windows the park you are in allows for and the rest of the time you are running off of batteries. You can be free to say do a day long hike and come back to batteries that charged up over the lunch generators allowed time window as the generator automatically kicked on while you were out hiking and charged up the batteries while conforming to park regulations. At this the generator stays throttled back enough while charging batteries to stay within park noise regulations. If the generator detects a high enough state of charge for your batteries, maybe it skips running during charge windows, granted this can be a little tricky as LFP batteries have a fairly flat charge curve across most of its charge band. Maybe the generator can be hooked to a DC amp (current) meter on the load side to make better determinations on the battery charge level. (The idea being the generator already has a built-in volt meter, so if you program in your battery capacity, it can measure what the battery load takes out of the battery and use that to help estimate remaining battery charge even as load causes battery voltage to dip under load.)

Clarification: You said you could run 2 generators in parallel and you will have 120 volt and 240 so that you can plug in your RV. I am sure what you meant to say is that RV's use 30 amp 120 volt not 240 volt. The 50 amp rv receptacle is 240 volts but it is split into two 120 volt cicuits. So if it has the 50 amp outlet that is probably the split cicuit design.
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends 2 ай бұрын
Yes rvs don’t typically have 240 appliances except some really large class A’s I guess. But yea a 50amp rv like you mentioned is 120v times 2 lines but not 240v anywhere in the RV. But most rvs are coming with 208Y so now 120v will power both legs in the rv…but you are still limited to only 30amps.

I would ditch the gasoline. Just do propane and natural gas. My gas generator was so hard to start and has to rebuild the carb twice now. That will never happen with propane or NG. Save a little money and ditch the gas part. Also make it an inverter generator. Most people are not running a power saw.
@dongchen7940
@dongchen7940 5 ай бұрын
Most gasoline starting issues are user errors, I.E store gas without stabilizer for an extended period. not draining the carb before storage, etc. Also, most families won't have large enough propane tanks to use a generator for over 10 hours. In a weather conditions that you need to use the backup generator it is a lot harder to refill propane than refilling gas. Using nature gas drops your generator capacity by 1/3.😅

You state these are becoming more like automotive design. Well automotive design today, sucks. It's difficult to troubleshoot and expensive to repair due to modular designs and technological "innovation" designs that are nightmarish to trace out even with a scope. Engine control modules that are 'plug and play' such as those depicted on your video are rather expensive and rival the cost of replacing the entire generator. What ever happened to connecting a basic gasoline engine to a generator? Much simpler and easier to maintain and use.
