I lived in Germany before moving to Texas, and have spent quite some time trying to figure out what is it that makes European cities interesting and attractive and walkable that’s lacking in San Angelo and other cities. I think part of the problem is in city zoning. Those single-use commercial zones clear all the residents away from downtown and take the people away, and that hurts the city. I look around downtown and there are so many empty office buildings that could be reworked into great apartments that help relieve some of the inflated housing costs around the city as a whole, as well as bring more life (literally) into the downtown core. Another problem comes from the car-focused infrastructure. I realize that a car is a must-have in Texas (distances here are measured in hours, after all), but the downtown core should be focused more on social activity and human living than getting cars through (though that’s still a significant consideration).

11:27 I would move the bikes behind the parked cars with a low curb to limit how far over the parked cars move.

seriously in my town they just paint the middle of the outside car lane with a bicycle logo at a slight offset towards the curb and call it a bike lane and pat themselves on the back

Why can't this man GET TO THE POINT! All this "I am so excited to be here" crap is really irritating, also the diversions about the ladies he has talked to. I bet his students find him infuriating. Just get to the point, tell it straight, and go away

I see what you did there :D Coming from Split, Yugoslavia, there is a marvellous part of the town built in 70's called Split 3. An amazing example of urban planning in 20th century.

I like his ideas for urban development. I like less his house. He talks a lot about creating an inviting and coherent urban fabric, but then designs a house that is different architecturally from the neighborhood, and does not harmonize with the neighborhood. The stick out sections are original but break the continuous facade at odd angles, when he talks about creating urban coherence, but then breaks it. I do not like the interior, but that is his prerogative.

I think his house is actually pretty good and well placed. Yes, you can argue that those rectangle sections breaks street facade, but the thing is: there is not much place to work with in a first place, to create something functional. When you build a house for yourself, you don't do it solely for your neighbors sightseeing pleasure, you know. It has to be usable by its inhabitants. So it's a balance between your interests and interests on all other people around, and he has done it nicely, it doesn't offend street facade imho. I mean this house in this place is much better for sightseeing, rather then empty nothingness, that was there before and could possibly stay that way infinite time otherwise.
