May somebody tell me why there's a digital sign instead of just normal reflective sign? Does change from time to time to show some different text?
@everydayengineering8 ай бұрын
No its just the same no left turn symbol all the time. It was a very strange decision and I have not been able to find an answer. Maybe they thought it would be more visible, but it’s really not

On the road with one of SC's largest high schools, there is one at an intersection that shows no right turn onto that road during morning hours and afternoon when school is over but during school hours, like 9-3, it's off and after like 5, it's off as well. So yes, at least the one near me does change. Easier to understand I feel like than two reflective signs, one saying the hours in which you can't turn

I see NO _RIGHT_ TURN signs like that in a lot of places, that turn on whenever a red right arrow is visible. They do it because a lot of motorists don't know they're not allowed to turn right against red arrows.

It's nice, but also baffling how drivers will still make left turns in both directions.. which can be dangerous for people walking and biking across the intersection.
@miles56008 ай бұрын
And yet they still turn left 🤦🏽 they should pit the signals at the near side of the intersection and put in a concrete median to stop people from going left there.
@everydayengineering8 ай бұрын
Unfortunately nearside signals are not compliant in the US :( and a median to prevent left turns would impede the cross traffic. Not sure what else they could do here aside from finding a way to allow left turns (its not a huge deal anyways) or just try designing it again
@WestCoastTrafficSignals8 ай бұрын
@@everydayengineeringI guess they prohibit left-turns due to the permissive-only phasing and oncoming traffic also turning left, which could cause vehicles to get trapped in the middle of the intersection. They could have it run split-phase, such that one direction gets a protected green through and left, then the opposing direction would get their own protected through and left.
@everydayengineering8 ай бұрын
@@WestCoastTrafficSignals so there are no left turns allowed from any direction at this intersection, all movements are intended to be thru or right. this is such a large intersection (and is actually a 5-way) that the cycle length is already around 180 seconds, so i was told a few years ago that no lefts are allowed since it would require additional phase time
@acmenipponair8 ай бұрын
@@everydayengineering That's NOT a big crossing. 4-5 lanes are even normal for inner city roads in Germany. Perhabs you Americans really need to learn stuff from other countries in how to do traffic better.
@everydayengineering8 ай бұрын
@@acmenipponair the crossing is 10 lanes across with 5 legs of the intersection. Perhaps you should reserve your comments until you see the full context of the intersection and not demean others. I have many videos regarding this intersection if you’d like to properly get the context here. And for the record, I think there are many things about this intersection I would have done differently, so I am not defending the design in any way
@nomadMik8 ай бұрын
I've seen these across the US, in many places where turns are banned. Is this just 'new' to this particular intersection?
@everydayengineering8 ай бұрын
Yes just new to here. But the vertical yellow and red arrows are not allowed, only the green
@JoePCool148 ай бұрын
Pretty sure vertical red arrows are not permitted in the MUTCD. Too hard to see.
@everydayengineering8 ай бұрын
Correct that’s what i put in the description
@acmenipponair8 ай бұрын
What? Your Street Codes then really need to get updated! Because they are absolute normality everywhere outside the USA. In fact, when in Germany a lane is only for straight traffic, they are mandatory here!
@JoePCool148 ай бұрын
@@acmenipponair I think straight red arrows are a terrible idea. The idea of a red light is to be able to see the darn thing. Red arrow makes it too hard.
@TexasHighwayMan8 ай бұрын
@@acmenipponair - In Germany, though, it's a black arrow on a red circular signal, which improves visibility.
@traffic.engineer8 ай бұрын
@@acmenipponairThey are prohibitted because drivers who are colorblind may assume they can go straight. Only a green straight arrow is permitted, and a circular red is used to contrast it with the green arrow. Red arrows are only allowed for turns as they are done at slower speed.

how much is all this signaling costing tax payers? get rid of all signs and signals.

idk but considering taxes go to so many different things, im guessing for this specific signal, anywhere between 0 and 1 cent of your individual tax
