Seriously! It makes no sense . Construction workers have phones and walky talkies 1-2 mins should be enough time to get off the bridge what the he'll architect designs a bridge that will collapse with one support being broken? And why were the ends of the metal flaming when they broke? I know metal gets hot when bent but, flames really? 🤯

@@lpsstacy the problem is not the architect or the engineers, they built a solid bridge that stood for 50 years. Those of us outside that area need to understand the bridge also carries I-695, and neither I-95 nor I-895 are capable of carrying that much traffic (both use tunnels to go under the harbor and cannot carry hazardous materials). The other part of I-695, which swings to the west of Baltimore, will have to carry the load, creating moving parking lots back around to I-95.

this is at least somewhat mitigated by the fact that while the port is closed, much of that traffic won't flow. the real hell will come when the port reopens, which will be long before the bridge can be rebuilt some of the traffic will probably move to wilmington or philadelphia, but that's just going to have to come down I-95 (through baltimore) to get to washington anyway. so yeah, baltimore traffic is gonna be worse than usual for many many months

Quite a bit of smoke coming from the engines of a ship that lost its power. Smaller cargo ships have at least 2 anchors while larger ships have more. Not one anchor is dropped in the water to attempt to stop the ship?

60% of his capacity the have. That was not the problem. Also the vessel has a valid classification from his home port in Singapore. One of the biggest and modern port of the world. In Sept.2023 the vessel has his last inspection by a foreign port state authority. All was ok. Such an extreme malfunction does not happen because of one error. This was a chain reaction of many small technical and most of the time also human errors. Without any electric power a vessel like this is a big 100.000 ton cork. The last rudder position, last throttle, wind and water flow decides where you go. Only your anchor can slow you down, but a 100.000 tons vessel very slowly. The outdated bridge with insufficient protection against collisions had no chance.

@@debradow7082I asked the same question… it looks overloaded. I can’t see where they could put another 40%… it looks like every possible spot on that ship has a container on it. I understand it may be weight of the container and I am guessing there are rules about putting the heaviest positioned in the bottom center of the load. Also, they’ve no line of sight for anything below the cockpit. I doubt they could see the key bridge’s support pillar. Shouldn’t boats loaded like this be tugged or at least escorted beyond critical infrastructure? Seems like an accident waiting to happen if they’re counting on complicated human procedures to overcome catastrophic risk.

In my opinion as a Master Mariner and Marine Pilot this accident could have been avoided if Master of ship and Pilots onboard allowed ship to maintain the speed of about 8kt's instead of slowing vessel down when power was restored x2 onboard ship. Ship would of passed under bridge at 8kt's. There was only light wind early in the morning so windage would not have affected the ship to a large degree. The slowing down of the ship caused the bow(front) of ship to veer to starboard(right hand side) thus causing the ship to collide with bridge foundation support. There was not enough distance from ship when it lost power to the bridge to safely stop the ship before the bridge. Best option in this scenario forget about dropping anchor and trying to slow down using engine. Rather focus on trying to maintain ship in navigation channel when power was restored x2 and with the speed of about 8kt's it would quickly pass under bridge. Once passed under bridge then drop both anchors to slow down ship and use astern engine movements to reduce speed when power back on. The natural thing to do is to reduce speed as fast as possible to prevent or soften any collision or grounding which might happen however in this case it appeared to be the wrong decision.

Can the engine of a ship of this size all of a sudden get stopped? If so, what may be the plausible causes? Is not it's a very old ship with a poor track record of regular repair and maintenance ? Is not it the bunker fuel used was a very low-grade one? Does the cargo ship have stand by engine in case the main engine on cruise is shut in the middle of a turbulent ocean? These and more are the questions one may ask to have a clear view of how and why the ship collided with the bridge.

Here in Vancouver BC Canada, On June 17, 1958, at around 3:40 p.m., two spans of the Second Narrows Bridge, then under construction, suddenly collapsed into Burrard Inlet. Nineteen workers fell into the inlet. Among the 19 dead were 14 ironworkers, three engineers, a painter, and a commercial diver who died a few days later when he drowned trying to recover a body. Twenty others were seriously injured. A Canadian icon, Stompin' Tom Connors paid a musical tribute to the fallen ironworkers with the song “The Bridge Came Tumbling Down” on his 1972 album My Stompin' Grounds. Hopefully, a musical group will step up and do the same for these brave young men who lost their lives. with respect from Canada.
