New Warships of the Brazilian Navy - Frigates Tamandaré
Brazilian Navy “Classe Tamandaré” Frigate Program
The Brazilian Navy has been conducting the “Classe Tamandaré” Frigate Program since 2017, with the objective of promoting the renewal of the Fleet with four modern ships, of high technological complexity, built in the country, with delivery forecast for the period between 2025 and 2028 .
The four frigates initially planned will be versatile escorts with significant combat power, capable of countering multiple threats and intended to protect maritime traffic, being able to carry out defense missions, near or far, of the Brazilian coast. They can be used to protect the component units of the Main Corps of Naval Forces, as well as in remote areas, forming Surface Action Groups or as Search and Attack Units against submarines.
They will also be employed in the Brazilian Jurisdictional Waters (AJB) patrol, with an emphasis on inspection and protection of economic activities, mainly oil and fishing.
They will be ships with high combat power, capable of protecting the extensive Brazilian maritime area, with more than 5,700 km², called “Blue Amazon”, carrying out search and rescue operations and meeting international commitments, among other tasks.
The Program is a fundamental element and an indispensable means, not only for the control of maritime areas of interest, avoiding the access of undesirable means by sea, but also for the country to act under the aegis of international organizations and in support of the abroad, in a way that is compatible with Brazil's insertion in the international scenario.
