Hey Trent, I didn't realize this either until Richie Vitale and Bobby himself said it, but the Yamaha 8310z trumpet is actually based on the 4 or 5 medium bore Martin Committee trumpets Bobby owned (not the Schilke B7 like we thought). Thanks a lot for posting this comparison video!!!!

you seem way more accurate and consistent on the Shew, but I'll bet if you played the A9 much longer it would offer greater flexibility along with sufficient accuracy to get it done...

As usual, cool video....well, you asked, Martin Committee vs. Severinsen Eterna, vs. Yamaha 734 vs. an Adams of your choice, pretty random, and I don't expect all those in stock.

positively the Shew is clearer, more crisp, the Adams fuller more rich with a deeper resonance as opposed to the more sparkly ring of the Shew. This is to my ears... way different...

And what about the different bore? 8310z is M although step bore, while the A9 il XL

Is it possible to compare the A1 and A6. I know their fairy different horns but i recently purchased a 38B and have always thought the A1 would be a good fit for me. So if you could demo them both I’d be super grateful.

The Yamaha has better core and slotting. The Adam's A9 is better for ballads and soloing...it sounds slippery.

exactly! Very different horns IMO but both are great. I think I'd choose the Adams if I was playing solos but the Yamaha is a killer all-around horn!

The Yamaha has a more focused core...centered, so to speak. The Adams is more open and welcoming, with an edge.

It's very important that a trumpet is welcoming. Some horns couldn't care less about you.

Yamaha sounds stable, a commercial trumpet. Adams is not as focused as Yamaha but it has personality. I have the Adams A9 and what a miss on it is more resistance to blow. And the pistons are too hight.

They’re both dark, with the Yamaha seeming to have a quicker response where the attacks pop a little. The Adams sounded more focused but also tight. The Shew has a focused sound but slightly rounder. The Shew definitely responded better in the upper register. Looking forward to trying both at the Midwest!

Yamaha is a cleaner sound to me, the Adams sound more jazzy....I’d like to have them both.

I have an Adams A9L. It has a great sound from the bottom to G-top-of-the-stave. Above that it's VERY hard work. Over all it's a hard work trumpet. I hardly use it, because my Smith Watkins with its interchangeable lead pipe is much more responsive. But the Smith is medium bore and the throat of the bell much smaller, which is much easier to play, but some people would find it too edgy. The Adams is good for mellow stuff like ballads.

I can't beleive you had a customer that bought an A9 and called it a step up horn. Hahahahahahahahaha. Do you still have his number? I'll trade him an LA Ambassador for it?

Thanks Trent. I'd be interested in hearing your impressions about how the horns feel to play. Ease of blow...access to upper register...slotting..."user friendliness"? Cheers!

Both sound great. Adams sounds a bit fluegel like, very powerful - rough, forcefully. Jazz horn, but it wants to SHOUT OUT from Freddie to Avantgarde- expressively. The Yamaha still has that mysterious "out of the dark coming - "solid velvet sound" plus outpopping note-attack but it has a kind of elegance. I (and as I think hundreds others too) who are students of the trumpet and used to "ML bore", will ask themselves, if they would be able to play (not to overblow/ to manage) such small Committee - like M bores, even if they get bigger near the entrance in the bell. So many tales and so many questions and "storys" about the pro and contras usung M or L bores....I am confused about, If I could think to go for M /step bore) Horns, because I hate any stuffed damperlike feel in a blow. What is unwanted stuffed feel? What pleasurable (necessary) resistance ?

Man, yamaha absolutely nails everything they touch in the sound world. I got a new aventage receiver, they nail that too! Yamaha was first with the additive digital synths too. I feel like yamaha really sciences it up, amd, on the far other side of the scale, Bach / Selmer does trail and error, almost... i always seem to buy a Bach (one always seems to show up at the right price when im in the market for a horn), but I always, always say "next time ... yamaha!"
