Could you do the acorn sweater but ADD a line of the lace going down the sleeve like the other one? I think that would embrace the beauty in both and leave you with a really great original design.

Hi Mark, I'm an enthusiastic beginning knitter who really appreciates your videos, especially those that mix some travel, music, and knitting. I was struck by the sweater with the quilt block design. I could imagine an open cardigan with vertical rows (one on each side of the opening) of smaller scale quilt designs in colors that coordinate with the solid color of the body of the garment. Thanks so much for sharing your great work!

Well, phooey. I thought I was one of the first commenters in the wee hours last night but must have neglected to click the button. D’oh! And now you might not see this, oh well. I like all of your choices but had some suggestions too which I might not be able to find now…one was the Kudzu cardigan. I think another was the Ilya pullover, very similar to one of your picks. The Cinnamomum pullover. The Kuutar pullover. It’s a deep rabbit hole! I really like how you are stepping right out there and saying, who sez men can’t sparkle? Who sez men can’t wear lace? Don’t care, screw them! Good for you, and keep it up!

As a lace knitter, I can’t resist giving some unsolicited advice. 1. For your first lace project, you might want to choose a yarn that isn’t dark in colour, because dark colours make it hard to see the stitches. 2. Use life lines, and lots of them. The easiest way to introduce life lines is to use knitting needles with interchangeable tips. Cut a good length of dental floss and tie it through the tiny hole used to tighten the needle tip onto the cable. Knit a round and allow the needle to thread the floss through your stitches as you go. Once your round is done, slip that needle through the stitches not onto the cable (still sitting on your working needle) and snip the knot. Pull the floss a little further and secure any way you prefer: your life line is installed without you having spent time actually threading it through every stitch with a darning needle. 3. Use one or more post-it notes to mark your place in the chart. As soon as a row is done, MOVE THE POST-IT. This is especially useful if you’re leaving your project be for a bit for any reason. 4. If you want your lace to shine, remember that the wilder your yarn is, the less you’re going to see the lace. Somehow fluffy lace/cobweb weight yarns don’t fall into that category, especially if they’re very light in colour. 5. If a project includes a lace portion and one without lace, and you’re totally in love with a variegated/tweed yarn, consider using two different, coordinating yarns for your project. Use the most uniform one on the lace portion and the variegated/tweed one on the rest. 6. Don’t frog. Unravel. See (2) where I advise the use of life lines. I’m not kidding. As much as it hurts to unravel, trying to ladderstitch a lace pattern is madness and rarely looks good. 7. Yarn joins: avoid knots, they almost always show up in the lace, pop to the front etc. That, at least, is my experience. Spit splice, or weave in as quickly as possible. Usually when working with very fine yarns and/or when using two strands together for a project that involves lace patterns means you can easily get away with introducing an extra thread over several stitches without it being noticeable. And trust me, I’ve got several Haapsalu, Ohrenburg and Shetland lace shawls under my belt that I knitted in cobweb weight yarn. They took me ages to knit and I did NOT want the joins to be visible. I hope you thoroughly enjoy lace knitting. And as a spinner, I hope some day you discover the joy of spinning. There is nothing like the joy of knitting something in a yarn you’ve spun yourself. 😊

Hello, Mark! Another very nice video. You asked for suggestions, so here goes! I think the color you were considering to replace your lost Ingrid Slipover might be too dark to show the pattern properly. That garment is so dependent on yarn choice to highlight the pattern that I think a lighter color and a tighter twist/smooth yarn might be called for. I just finished the Ingrid Sweater Man for my son. I had originally swatched for it in Berroco Vintage, but the stitch definition just wasn't what I wanted. I ended up using Malabrigo Rios and it came out great. I've also knit a Ranunculus (and yes, you pronounced Hirose right; you can basically pretend Japanese names are Italian or Spanish (the vowel sounds are the same) and you'll usually be right!) I avoided the Ranunculus for ages because the Sad Leaf Girl in the ginormous sweater was not the look I wanted for myself. It wasn't until I realized I could make a much less oversized version that I was interested! I did mine for summer in Juniper Moon Farms Zooey (cotton/linen) and it's very nice. Many people of knit multiples of them in all different fibers, which I thought was silly until I finished mine and immediately started planning what my next one would be! It's such a fun, quick knit. One word of advice: the short sleeve version is VERY SHORT! There's an option as you're finishing the yoke to leave the sleeves live to make them longer; I'd advise doing that unless you want them super-short. It's the only thing I don't love about mine, since my arms aren't something I want to show off. I love the sparkle you're adding to your version; it's going to be so striking. Also, I really enjoyed your last video where you showcased your musical life. I used to do a lot of choral singing, although now I'm a folk/standards singer and mostly perform with my husband. The Messiah is my all-time favorite; it feels like bodysurfing on a great big wave, and it was lovely to hear your beautiful tenor voice!

Having knitted lace I think a plain yarn rather than a tweed would be better. The nubs/slubs in a tweed yarn will blur the lace pattern. In my opinion, and it is only my opinion, the stitch definition in a lace pattern needs to be very visible. You could try knitting up a swatch in the tweed yarn before doing anything larger and see how it comes out. With the last pattern you showed, the more you knit the lace the more familiar you become with the pattern and the easier it becomes. You recognise where the loops and stitches go to form the pattern so don’t be put off by the amount of a repeated lace pattern. You might be better off making a lace scarf or stole as a starting point to get used to how lace patterns form before undertaking a jumper, especially one with a lace yoke which will require decreases and the pattern being kept straight,
@MakerMarkKnits2 күн бұрын
I will absolutely do a gauge swatch/test piece with any tweed. And I very well may abandon it and choose a more tidy fiber choice! Thank you for being here and for sharing your wisdom and pointers with me!

I absolutely love love tweed on men (on women too but men especially) and recently I came across a KZbinr that talks about fashions through the centuries… I always wondered why tweed was kind of seen as a country thing , turns out that tweed wool fabric was extremely popular do to it being very easy to keep looking good! So if they were out and about they could just brush themselves off and still look decent. There’s something about it that I think is so cosy and lovely. So tweed for the win - acorn definitely the winner and I think second would be for me to finish the ranunculus , then I have to say I love the Eiffel Tower one especially because of the sleeves so if I didn’t want that pattern all over I’d definitely take the sleeve inspo ❤ All your gifts were stunning and I really want a Paula bag now (my moms name is Paula) , I’ll have to check and see if she ships internationally to Ireland x

The woven towel I think is a point twill pattern, for lace wosted spun yarn is better than woollen, to make sue the lace pattern is clear, if you use textured yarn it will blur the lace. Swatch the lace pattern and block to check it works with the yarn

The Zweig looks very you and you’ve already got a start on the yarn. I love the look of lace but I’ve found, for me, that it is so easy for me to make mistakes and unknitting lace is really hard for me. So if you haven’t done much of it, I would stick with a pattern that is just a lace yoke rather than all-over. Then see how you feel. Also, I echo another comment to stay with solid colors more so the lace pattern is the highlight. And I would stay away from halo yarns for the same reason plus it is awful to fix mistakes. But I’m sure whatever you choose to do, it will be great.

I think the acorn lace would be amazing. I’m thinking the darker green though

Hi Mark, I hope you don't mind a lurker throwing in her tuppence worth. I love the start you've made on your Rununculus, I especially love the sparkle! I would never have thought if adding sparkles to lace, now my brain is running at 200mph thinking if I should do that with a future lace project! I think the Acorn Lace is stunning, and would look fantastic in the moss colour. I'm looking forward to seeing what you make 😊

Thank you so much! I was tempted to do something else with sparkle following my all over sparkle sweater. I may not love the outcome, but I was inspired to at least get it started!

Isn't the quilt cardigan cool? I love the example pictures. I might wait until I have plenty of scraps in the perfect colors to make it!

2025 will also be my lace knitting year!! Currently working on the Rheinlust Shawl. For a sweater I really like the "Keep it warm sweater" by Yeon Ewa Lee if you are looking for more ideas

Best wishes for you and Ned! I think the pine green would highlight the lace pattern better than the moss will. Personally I don't understand why people like the Ranunculus so much, other than it is a quick knit. I have testknitted the Petal Sweater by Ravijennaknits (knitting my second one right now), and I would recommend that pattern instead of the Ranunculus. The pattern will be released Monday 7th of January (no, I don't get anything for this, the designer doesn't know I write this, it is just such a great design and quick knit 😊). Oh, and I love the sweater you are wearing in this video, looks amazing on you!

Hey Mark! The detail on the sleeve for the chinkapin is really cute! I do have a request for pattern links in future videos, though: space them out with their names? I fat lingered them badly and then lost my place in the list on more than one occasion trying to keep up. It is a lovely list!
