I built an outdoor playcenter for the kids yesterday, today and deep cleaned my mini van for almost 3 hrs tonight, washed tons of dishes, did about 5 loads of laundry, made 2 full meals, petted my dog, played with the kids and picked up some trash along the roadside. This is very touching. This is basically how my life was during my childhood. Same local language, same rice growing process, same cooking, same bamboo furniture, same environment. But after my mom passed away when I was 12, and I went to cities for study then, life had changed dramatically. Now that I am in Canada alone, I occasionally cook some traditional food for myself too, but not as good as these. Great to watch these videos and to bring my memories back to old times. Thank you.

Four decades ago, we Chinese didn’t have enough food for our usually big family, so we saved all the NICE things till the Chinese New Year, including the meat, egg, sugar and fabric .. etc, which were all distributed by the government under a ration system. Ours were really great mothers. They managed to hand-make nearly everything for the whole family, from big dishes, small cakes to clothes and shoes. Putting on new clothes and having a big dinner with family while fireworks lighting up the windows were the most beautiful memory of the childhood of my age.

When I watch your short films (the word “video” doesn’t seem to measure up to what you create), I am transported to a classroom of peace and unparalleled natural beauty. I have no doubt that the work you do is extremely hard. Just the filming alone looks to be quite involved. I came to realize by the end of the first video I watched that you do all of your own filming. The fact that the camera is always stationary means that you must set up every shot ahead of time and then for some scenes, even film from different angles. There is no substitute for hard work and Li is doing a wonderful job in promoting Chinese culture and values. The tenacity and dedication shown...it is so rare. The chinese dishes are so healthy and yummy. Good to learn even just to appreciate. Still remarkable in this day and age to to find such persons. There is a screen writer, directors and real chefs who advice on menu and dubbed some of the hands. Regardless, it is well produced content. But don’t be fooled. No rural people in China live like this. They live like farmers like anywhere else.
