New Year's LUCKY BAGS in Japan!!! Worth the Hype?

The Hype: Fukubukuro (福袋) or Lucky Bag is a Japanese New Year custom where stores assemble grab bags filled with unknown random contents & sell them at a substantial discount, usually 50% or more off the list price. Popular stores' fukubukuro are often sold out quickly & some stores have lines of people waiting to Get Some! Recently, orders can be made online & the goods delivered or picked up at your convenience.

The Reality: Fukubukuro are an easy way for stores to unload excess & unwanted merchandise from the previous year, due to a Japanese superstition that one must not start the New Year with unwanted items from the previous year & start clean. Nowadays, some fukubukuro are pushed as a lavish New Year's event, where the contents are revealed beforehand, but this practice is criticized as just a renaming of selling things as sets.

A bonus today! Lots of great stuff; my favourite was the kitchenware, but you can never go wrong with Under Armour. The Baskin Robbins ice cream looked so dense & delicious & was thoughtfully served in a cone, with a spoon; that's brilliant. The Village Vanguard bag didn't seem as exciting as they usually are, but I got a chuckle when the game said "today is a good day for challenge" as you were showing the pillow during the outro 😅

The US should do mystery grab bags. You two Really racked up on some super cool clothing. Almost all of my athletic wear is Under Armor. Under Armor are big supporters for law enforcement and Military which is why I love them❤️ Where I live the under armor gives law enforcement 15-30% off all purchases when I show them my police ID and badge.
