John Madden tells a story in one of his books about a Giants practice he attended back in the 1980s. After practice was over, the NYG quarterbacks had a contest to see who could throw a football into the upper deck of the old Giants Stadium from the Meadowlands logo in the middle of the field. Phil Simms tried a few times and couldn't do it. Backup Jeff Rutledge couldn't, either. Jeff Hostetler -- their 3rd string QB at the time -- had the best arm of them all and came the closest, be he couldn't do it. Lawrence Taylor came over and tried a few times, and he came closer than any of the QBs. Then George Martin tried it ... and he heaved a ball up there into the third deck on his first try!

@@steveknight4272 he was a big dude. I was 11 when I met him by FDU in Teaneck back in the 80s. He was with Marshall and they let my father and I try their Superbowl rings on. My old man was a mason with block hands. His thumb was swimming in their rings. Was like a bracelet to me. They could have told us to get lost but they legit Sat down talked to us and were such great people. Back then athletes were great people that stopped for their fans and took the time to make you feel like they cared about you and showed appreciation that I would look up to them. I've seen athletes since even as recently as a year ago. Bunch of snobs and to good to talk to you.

When football was like this...When teams literally had to figure out a way to survive 60 minutes on the field with the Giants defense. There were teams that had juggernaut defenses for a year or two. Pittsburgh had their Steel Curtain, Dallas had their Doomsday Defense, Chicago had their Monsters of the Midway...But can anyone honestly recall a defensive force for an entire decade like the New York Giants?

I was at that Redskins-Giants game in 1990. The Giants defense held the Redskins to 10 points. During the 4th quarter, Ernest Byner had a pass bounce off his chest in the end zone and we picked it. The Walls INT for a TD came on the Redskins final Possession, we were up 14-10. When Walls ran that ball back to the end zone I thought Giants Stadium was going to collapse to the ground.

True story about the one against the Eagles at 4:42. Pete Axthelm,on the NFL Today, would always pick against the Giants on covering the spread, and he would always be wrong. That game, the Giants were favored by 3.5 - 4.5 points. When they went to overtime, Pete was ecstatic. He said "The only way I can be wrong is if the Giants score a touchdown in overtime, and you know teams play for field goal position and kick it. I'm not going to be wrong this week." They move on to the next game. About 40 seconds later, Bob Costas says "Ah, Pete?" Pete, not knowing anything says "Yeah, Bob?" Costas says "The Giants just intercepted Jaworski and ran it in for a touchdown, and the Giants won by six." Pete slid his clipboard across the table and said "I never win with the Giants!" I was like "Well then quit picking against them, you moron!"

Bob Rezac Didn't Martin play tight end in college? Bill Parcells called George Martin the most consistent defensive lineman he ever coached. Notice how he never came off the field? Martin played the run and got after the QB as well as anyone from his era. Along with Harry Carson, George was the leader of those great NYG defenses of the 1980's and talk about big plays? George was the man!!!!

GodsSon987 Those were the last points in the first half of that famous 49-3 playoff game . Bill Walsh said "we were just shattered by the Giants" and by god they were. Without a doubt, the best game the 1986-87 NY Giants ever played. I know I'm a bit biased, but that might have been the best game any pro football team for the entire decade. It was almost perfect.

It's amazing how quickly a player can go from being beloved to hated, but Jim Burt sure pulled it off. I've still never forgiven him for his hits on Hostetler in the 1990 Championship game. It basically just proved what we always knew about Burt but didn't want to admit when he was a Giant, that he was just another dirty Miami player.
