The upper level of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge connecting Staten Island and Brooklyn, New York, was closed on Monday, November 30, due to high winds, police said.
The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for Brooklyn on November 30, which included a gale warning for the New York Harbor.
Video that surfaced on social media on Monday shows the empty suspension bridge making groaning noises as it shifted in the wind.

It’s suppose to do that its a suspension bridge it’s actually held up by cables and is built to move in high winds so the winds don’t destroy the bridge. Lots of high rise building also move in the wind

This is very true, I’ve been to the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, at the top mirador floor you can feel the building sway from side to side, you have to stand still though to feel it, at least that day that I was there, local friends told me that it’s stronger on windier days, like this bridge here saying “this too shall pass” get it? Pass over the bridge.

Bridges are actually designed to move I. High winds, as you can see in the video the connection points between the roads have some give to them. However it is still dangerous to be up there because when bridges rock back and forth like this, it puts a lot of stress on the structure. This exact scenario is happening back in the 1920s or so and is what caused another suspension bridge to collapse

@@almamurphy6994The original Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which failed four months after opening in 1940, was susceptible due to its design. The suspended segments of the bridge were only eight feet from top to bottom. There wasn’t any truss used on the deck. Thus when the wind picked up it “hit” the solid girder walls of the bridge and began to vortex around it, causing the bridge to begin to oscillate with it. These oscillations increased with frequency and intensity until the bridge tore itself apart. In the aftermath of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse, engineers moved away from building slender long suspension bridges in favor of bridges with wider decks and deep trusses. In this video, the movement of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge is a normal occurrence factored into the design of the bridge- it is moving with the wind but not being bent by the wind.

1. This is a great demonstration of engineering; the consideration that high winds and weather affect these huge pieces of construction and that they must be built to subtly move while maintaining their overall shape and supporting huge loads. Awesome demonstration. 2. Conversely, this must be absolutely TERRIFYING to witness in person. Imagine seeing this monstrously huge bridge move in such perceptible ways. Imagine hearing that spooky groaning sound that seems to come from every horror movie where some creature/entity is arriving. LOL! You can probably hear that sound in the distance from this bridge, and I’m certain it’s subtle creepy. 😂

For those who dont know, every infrastructure or bridge is always gonna be ”lose” or have moving parts during extreme weather. If a structure was fully stable and screw tightly the chances of structure to break or fall down would be higher (think it as of a cold spaghetti straw how easy its to break). Thats why when you watch the video the bridge will always move when its windy rather than to try to resist the force and its the same with skyscrapers - it will always sligthly move to not break.

@@grizzlycountry1030 the Verrazano Bridge's design was based upon years of study, and a very hard lesson learned (being the original Tacoma Narrows Bridge). Suspension bridges, unlike more-rigid designs, were meant to flex (within certain limitations), and thus why Caltrans went with a self-anchored suspension bridge when they replaced the Eastern Span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, and an ultra-modern concrete and steel traditional suspension span for the westbound lanes of I-80 across the Carquinez Strait (replacing the original two-lane cantilever bridge opened in 1927, which was deemed unsafe due to seismic activity).

Bridges buildings and even your house and practically everything built from the ground up must be able to flex it’s happens wether you’re on it or not, if it’s too stiff as per science it will rip it’s on self apart, you want that bridge to be able to do this to a certain degree too much and that’s a Collapse too little and the same thing
