I saw the Skyliners for the first time in 1970 at the Hershey, PA show. Pepe Nataro played a solo in the Flight of the Bumble Bee. In 71 Sky won the DCA. I will never forget the photos that appeared in Drum Corps News in the next issue. Three pics. Joe Genero and Jimmy Russo, standing proudly after the prelim show with the number one salute. Next was a photo of Walter Winkleman with the caption... But Winkie Knows ! I love the Skyliners. Don't ever quit playing, Nobody else can do it like you.

Wish you had the whole show here! We were there that night and carried the "WOW!" sign on the field to show our love!!!

This was back, when we still had Real Drum and bugle Corps. There was no need for hundreds of props, we did not use electric guitars, slide trombones, electric organs, PA system used to explain what was going on. When grandma's played real rudiments, today they juggle more than play, in my opinion, DCI is responsible for the demise of what was one of the greatest activities. They turned it into a marching band competition, superimposed on a three ring circus. DCI and DCA need to change their names to marching band International. Call it what it really is today. We no longer have real drum and bugle Corps, may they all rest in peace. Former member of the Long Island Sunrisers 1964 through 1968.

I saw Sky win The Dream in '72. What a show!!!! It was very hot that day and I remember the smiles on their faces as they came of the field at Roosevelt. My drum instructor was in the snareline and it was such a thrill for me as I was only 13. As good as they were in this DCA Finals clip, they were smokin' at the Dream and won with a record breaking 92.25!!!!

I used to watch the Skyliners rehearse all the time at Randall's island in New York. Just the sheer power of the horn line used to blow me away....they could heard for miles, even in a loud ass city like NY. Sky was a direct inspiration for the New York Lancers and CMCC Warriors drum and bugle corps (Both NYC Corps from the Bronx, NY) we all rehearsed next to each other in the huge parking lot on Randall's island....once our practice was over we would just hang out and watch SKY for hours. We even had some Skyliner personnel as Instructors ( Hy Drietzer, and others). Glad they're still competing in DCA today.

Fantastic...great memories of my travels following the Sky! They were and always will be the best in my book! Traffic Jam was an amazing trademark...The Elks Parade was fantastic...Thanks for the great memories!

Raw emotion and visceral impact are the elements present in this that are missing in a lot of modern drum corps, especially in the juniors. Because of the current judging and show design philosophy, they're more concerned with aesthetic and intellectual effect than with emotional effect.

I think that the structural damage the Crusaders, Hurcs, Cabs and especially SKY inflicted on it this particular night was the main reason Roosevelt Stadium had to be eventually torn down ;-)
@davidsaccente7837 Жыл бұрын
Everyone forgets about the fact that we (Cabs) broke their winning streak the week before due to our tireless work in Chicago. Lots of changes to our show. They were great that night, but we were just a little bit better.

I knew your father and I met you when you were a baby still in your mother's arms pretty much you were about maybe a year year-and-a-half-old at the time, I am a, former member of the Long Island sunrises oh, I was attending a competition I was no longer a member of a sunrises and your dad came over to say hello to me and then your mother was sitting right next to me with you. May your dad rest in peace I know the story so sad.

01danbritt - that was PeeWee Todaro playing BumbleBee, Not Pepe Notaro. That was a 14-man snare line, 7 of which played tenor for some numbers, other numbers it was actually two 7-man snare lines playing different parts that complemented each other. Wes Myers wrote some great charts for the corps. Traffic Jam may be making a guest appearance with the Alumni Corps in 2015 - along with the perennial "ELKS PARADE!"

That was a long time ago, but in some ways it seems like it was just yesterday that I met you and your mom. Your father was a great horn player. I am listening to this clip again today, January 29th 2023. God bless you, take care of yourself.

hey scotty check out that 16 man snare line
@neiss61613 жыл бұрын
they had 16 snares. but they were labeled snare 1 and snare 2. They were playing the same parts but sometimes playing different parts.
@americanspirit89323 жыл бұрын
Half of that snare line actually was half snare and have 10 tenor, the tenant drummers will withhold their sticks like snare drummers. That was the thing at that time. I'm a former member of the Long Island sunrises and we did the same thing we had for snare and 4 tenor drummers holding the sticks likes snare drummer the sunrises did that in 1968.
@neiss6163 жыл бұрын
@@americanspirit8932 maybe you should check out the whole show. Yes they played tenor at times, but sometimes they played snare as counterpoint to the other half of the line, and then there were times they all played the same parts

Where was this show...NJ? When did DCA hold a championship in Philly PA 1972?
@wheelholder1213 жыл бұрын
@neiss616 was it 16 snares or 8 snares and 8 tenors?
@americanspirit89323 жыл бұрын
You are correct that's exactly how the drumlines divided the line. The tenor drummers held their sticks like the snare drummers.
