For real though. What is Soto supposed to do in that situation? Get back to the base faster?
@gregoryent
@gregoryent 4 ай бұрын
It’s a rough call. According to the rule Soto should be out, but he did visibly attempt to get out of the way and the fielder did misjudge the ball. If anything, this isn’t really anyone’s fault but the rule books. As far as I am aware, there should be some sort of rule where this play gets called an infield fly ruling, and regardless of the ball being dropped or not, the batter is out with all other base runners being either advanced one base or staying where they are.
@tszlongtsang5984
@tszlongtsang5984 4 ай бұрын
@@gregoryent but I thought when infield fly is called, regardless if the ball dropped or not, the batter is out with all other base runners staying where they are. And Soto is out because the ump thinks his actions are in an attempt to interfere with the play? I'm still new to baseball as a player and a fan so correct me if I'm wrong.
@TheEazieE
@TheEazieE 4 ай бұрын
An infield fly was called meaning the batter is out regardless of the fielder catching the ball or not. The baserunners must tag until either the ball is caught or hits the ground. Soto made an attempt to avoid contact and is entitled to 2nd base, he does not have to come off the bag to avoid contact, this is a judgement call by the umpire and they got it wrong. Should not have been a double play.

Tbh Verdugo is probably our best outfielder defensively. The only reason rengifo didn’t get a double, even after verdugo overthrew it, was because he got to that ball so quick. Idk what the fuck the Red Sox were thinking when they let him go. Even when he isn’t hitting great, he’s one of those dudes you can just put him down in the 8 or 9 hole and he’ll occasionally blast one, but he’s always consistent in the field.

if you call infield fly rule, the batter is already out, so what exactly was Soto interfering with at that point? his job is to decide whether to try to advance or go back to the base. he decided to go back to the base, and the infielder (inadvertently) interfered with his attempt to do so. the umpire should have just let Soto stay on second.
@jeffreyjacobs390

Play at second is a rip off .... how can SOTO (runner) do anything but, GET BACK TO SECOND BASE ..... as it would be an out for him not to !? He saw the fielder three steps away from second base and circled around him to return and tag up / stay safe .... the fielder MISJUDGED the ball's trajectory AND BACK PEDDLES onto Soto - not the other way around. Bull. Poor judgement by officials ..... MLB has too many illogical / inaccurate calls nowadays.
