The coolest thing about the F-35 is that it can "talk" with other jets with a data link. Say a ground sensor picks up a jet 200 miles away, you can take that information and fire a missile at it, without seeing the target yourself. This is called Data Link, and it can create a hive mind of equipment and systems. The more jets, drones, radars, warships, and ground vehicles you have in your battlefield, the smarter each vehicle gets. It is sci-fi level stuff.

15:08 judging from that comment I guess you didn't know about the Hawker AV-8B Harrier Jump Jet designed in the UK back in the 50s-60s. It is a VTOL capable jet fighter that has been used by many NATO nations ever since it was first produced. As for the USA I think only the Marines adopted it. The F-35B Lightning II (the Marine version) was made specifically to replace the old Harriers. The last new Harrier was made in 1997 and the last re-manufactured Harrier was in 2003 ending the Harrier line of multi role jump jets.

The Harrier is one of my favorite fighter planes, the f35 is a fifth gen fighter so of course it has the benefit of lessons learned from the forerunners the vertical take off on the Harrier operates off engine thrust vectoring for its vertical lift, the f22 has thrust vectoring for added speed in vertical takeoff, but it can land or takeoff by a mechanical fan built into the fuselage behind the pilot. The harrier is limited to 3 minutes before it begins to overheat. The f35 can fly higher and exceed the speed of sound.

I wouldn't call the C variant for the Navy aircraft carriers the "baby version", the wing area is much larger to enable it to have better range and takeoff payload, it's technically a bigger and heavier plane than the airforce's A variant, as well as a lower landing controllable landing speed which makes carrier landings easier, though the airframe is rated for less Gs than the A variant.

I've been watching your family's channel for a while now, and absolutely love the fact you guys did a video on the F35-A (US Airforce variant) and just wanted to say as someone who works on this beautiful jet, I can assure you this jet is absolutely incredible. Even tho I went to school to learn about everything on this jet, it still amazes me on its capabilities.

5:17: That's an F-15. The Top Gun jet is the F-14. 10:22: Well, you'd break a very expensive piece of equipment. 13:13: Finger Four formation. The idea is that it can split up into two flights and each individual fighter can cover the other. That does not really work out as well when you have an odd number of aircraft. 13:45: Only the F-35B, made for the USMC, can take off vertically. The A model is a conventional aircraft and the C model is equipped for carrier operations. And unfortunately, the B model, due to Pentagon demands for part commonality, caused both the A and C to have needlessly fat, draggy airframes that kill thier performance. The space where the lift fan is in the B is an empty space in the A and C. Its literally a waste of space.

The F-35 is a better plane period, they are stealth, can do any role, all pilots have helmets with visual HUD and can literally see through the plane and get telemetry fed to the helmet, can talk to each other and units on the ground seamlessly, the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps all use them now and the Marine variant has VTOL. They can carry more fuel and almost the same weapons capabilty as the A-10 without the massive gun which actually hinders the A-10 in direct fire CAS roles as the rate of friendly fire incidents with the A-10 are ovbious because of the recoil and difficulty actually aiming. They can carry ATGM's just like the A-10 as well. They can also have direct and good line of sight with friendly units with their helmets and sensors unlike even the A-10C which still relies on the pilot visually confirming an enemy or friendly. The A-10 is still good but if someone thinks it is better than an F-35 they are an idiot.

The f35 isn't a fighter in a dogfight with a raptor which is strictly designed for air superiority roles ie clearing the sky's it would scrub the floor with the f 35 due to the fact that it is designed around ground targets. They were designed to work in conjunction with the f22 the raptor clears the air of threats and the f 35 takes out ground targets with the f 22 holding air dominance
@MrElis4202 жыл бұрын
@@seanmorris2738 Did I ever say an F-35 was the equal of the F-22? No. That's why the job of the F-22 is literally all fighter, dogfighting air dominance from BVR. F-35's working in tandem with F-22's is the cream of the crop as you said, but F-35's can also do the missions of multiple different planes and actually have better instruments and avionics than the F-22 for those roles. The F-35 can also carry AMRAAMS for BVR fighting but in a dogfight have slightly less capability than an F-16.
@britishmalayasociety2 жыл бұрын
@@MrElis420 It acutally depends on the loadout the F-35 has. The only way an F-16 can outclass an F-35 on combat load with internal missiles, is if the F-16 has a combat load of fuel, and no missiles. F-35 has a really high thrust to weight ratio, it can carry weapons internally saving drag and aerodynamics, it has more thrust than the F-22! See US military exercises, it's got a kill ratio of 28-1. Pilots with little experience on the F-35 find it easy to fly. On a Red Flag 2019 exercise, one F-35 pilot with 8 hours on the clock for that type, saved a F-16 veteran with 3,000 hours on the type, because he didn't see the jet behind him. That F-35 pilot with 8 hours, "killed" 4 jets that day. And you're right. F-22 is actually being upgraded to get the F-35's systems and software.

The F-35 is not “better” than the F-22, despite being newer. The F-35 is a multi role platform, intended mainly for ground strikes and recon, but with some air-to-air capability. The F-22 is an air superiority fighter, meant to kill other planes. In a dogfight, the F-35 wouldn’t even last one turn with a Raptor. However, it has better sensors, better comms, and can fire in almost any direction at any time. Both are considered 5th generation fighter jets.

@corynydam23612 жыл бұрын
@@tojassargaja2085 It’s not about better or worse. The two platforms are designed for different things. Both are the best at those things, but fall short outside their area of expertise. When asked, every pilot who has flown one has preferred the F-35 over any earlier generation plane. Also, being cost effective isn’t just about saving money or getting votes in Congress. It’s a genuine strategic advantage for any military asset. For example, in WWII, the Tiger II was far superior to the Sherman tank used by the US. However, because the Tiger was so expensive, the US could afford to field something like 30 Sherman’s for every one Tiger, and keep them repaired and fueled. The same held true of most other German equipment. It was better than what the Allies had, but so expensive as to become cost prohibitive.

Hello New Zealand Family! I am pretty new to watching KZbin and reaction videos. I am a United States Naval Veteran. I served aboard the U.S.S. Carl Vinson, CVN 70, a Nimitz Class Aircraft Carrier from 1998-2002. While aboard that ship I was lucky enough to visit Perth, AUS and Hobart, TAZ. I will admit, those were my favorite ports, and I vow one day to take my wife one day. While I was in Hobart, a local family "adopted" me for a weekend. That was my favorite experience during my service. During my off-time on the ship, I would climb up to "Vulture's Row" to watch jets, airplanes and helos take off and land. Check out the retired F-14 Tomcat. That and the F-18 Hornet were the most used in my service days. You are a beautiful family, and your reactions and other videos are genuine and amazing! I do have a gift I would like to send, but I am still new to all of this and I don't know how to privately message.

Congrats on your first sponsorship. I hope many more follow. The Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL) capability was requested by various militaries in the multinational alliance that helped pay for this jet. When the Brit RN carrier Queen Elizabeth received her first two planes, they were piloted by two civilian test pilots that practiced bost short runway style takeoffs and landings as well as VTOL. Those two guys literally wrote the manual for the RN on how to conduct F35 operations on a carrier. When the squadrons arrived at the ship some months later, the entire airfleet embarked with no problems because they had the manual and practiced in advance. Now HMS Queen Elizabeth is fully combat capable.

Just for your info -- The F22 is not less advanced or more advanced -- the two are just for different markets and for different roles. The F22 is strictly for the United States Air Force. It's also just made for air-superiority. In other words, it's meant to kill other enemy aircraft and allow the United States to control the sky. The F35 was manufactured to have the same stealth technology for the Navy, Marines and export to other friendly countries. The F35 has three versions, the long-runway version, the carrier based version and the Vertical Take Off and Landings version (takes off like a helicopter). The F35 is also a multi-role aircraft (in other words, can be used for a variety of missions) as compared to the F22, which is only meant as an air-superiority aircraft. So one is not more advanced than the other, they are just used for different things. Hope this helps!!!!

I work at a base where the F35B is stationed and let me tell you the sound from these jets is insane. You feel the vibrations going through your entire body and can’t even hear yourself talk. You have to put conversations on hold until they are far enough away to be able to hear again.
@CDRhammond2 жыл бұрын
Ya we have to use hand signals because its so loud especially on an aircraft carrier that even when we are standing next to someone it's next to impossible to hear. So hand signals are used when moving aircraft around which are always two handed. One such hand signal you see a lot in movies is the two hands held over head which then turn into fists, this signals to the pilot to stop moving, in a carrier situation when they are getting ready to launch on the cat after this signal is given the Catapult officer (Yellow shirt better known as a shooter) will then lower the right arm down signaling to lower the front catapult bar on the front landing gear that attaches to the catapult shuttle. Other hand signals such as direction to turn are a bit easier to identify for someone outside of aviation (turn right given at 4:52).The hand signal for forward movement is also demonstrated in this video with both hands held above the head at 90 degree angles and moved in a shaking manner.
