I served two combat tours in Vietnam as a U.S. Marine machine gunner (0331) . I was wounded at the end of my second tour and medevacked to the Hospital ship Repose for stabilization. After I was stable enough to be moved I was returned to the mainland and put aboard a Marine C-130 for transfer to the Philippines for further treatment and then back to the states. I remember being strapped to a stretcher on the bulkhead of the C-130 along with about 20 other wounded Marines. The Marine pilot taxied to the end of the red dirt runway in the jungle and held the brakes while running the engines up to full power, clouds of red dirt could be seen swirling out behind the open loading ramp of the plane. Then the pilot let off the brakes and the C-130 shot down the runway and pulled up in a steep climb just short of the trees. All the IV bottles hanging from the stretcher racks were at a 45 degree angle and enemy machine gun tracers could be seen passing by the plane as we climbed. What a ride!! After 4 months at the Great Lakes U.S. Naval Hospital I was returned to duty and retired after 20 years. The C-130's and their crews have saved many a life, mine included. Tom Boyte, GySgt. USMC, retired Vietnam 65-66/70-71

It surprises me every single time how proud soldiers can be, for being brainwashed into invading other peoples homeland, murdering raping, droning, shooting around with uranium ammunition, napalm etc.... Still after decades they look for apporval. Completely delusional. Dude, you were part of one of the biggest crimes of humanity. You were not in danger, your homeland was safe, you wife and kids in a warm bed, well fed. Still you went out destroying the lifes of so many, And now that all the lies came to light, how women and children were raped tortued and killed by us soldiers, you are still acting proud, searching for approval? wow.... just wow

Each tracer bullets you see has 4 other bullets between them you can’t see! When your fighting bad guys and the bullets and RPG’s are flying and exploding around you and the radio guy says “We have Spooky on station” and to “get down, they’re making a gun run”…then the gunfire and what looks like a laser beam mixed with cannon fire…the ground shakes and there are explosions and the bad guys are blown apart and YOU DON’T DIE? Priceless…like a HUGE A-10 and then some! Got it?

The US military designates its aircraft with Mission letters and sequence numbers. The major letters most people know are A=attack, B=bomber, C=cargo, F=fighter (there's several others) so the basic plane is the C-130 - cargo plane 130. The ones they put the guns in became AC-130 - attack cargo plane 130. If they modify some to primarily drop bombs, they would be BC-130; an air-to-air refueling tanker would be KC-130.

The first fixed-wing gunship was the AC-47 Spooky, which first saw combat in Vietnam. It came to be by arming C-47 Skytrains with four Gatling guns. In addition to gunships, there were also gun trucks that were used by the supply convoys as escorts. I’ll have to find a good video on them

You are too funny! Love it. Since my dad was in the USAF, I got to fly in a C-130 when my dad was deployed to a base in Turkey which accommodated the families of the service personal assigned to the base. I was about 5yrs. old on my first flight, nearly 7yrs. old on the return. Let me help you out a bit on the classification. Technically speaking, all C-130s are "Hercules" designations, the variations come from basically one of two factors: whether it will be a standard cargo plane, a close air-support gun platform, or special operations/non-military use (the rarest of iterations.) If the aircraft is standard cargo (typically as well special ops./non milt.) then it is designated "C"-130. The gunship variation is given the "A" addition to the "C" as to indicate "A"ttack "C"argo/"C"arrier (or even "C"ombat, but I can't confirm that one.) After that the production evolution variant is defined by the final letter to the designation, i.e., C-130A, C-130B, C-130C, C-130D, etc. One more thing, your observation of the AC-130 looking like old sailing ships with their cannons protruding from the side is not a misplaced idea, after all, why do you think it's called a "gun-ship"?

I've had the opportunity to fly in many C-130 transport variants mostly from Kuwait to Baghdad. It's not as much fun as you make it sound. In her first video, Courtney commented on the size. They are the largest US transport that can land on short and minimally improved surfaces. I can also say that they are very maneuverable. Flying into Baghdad, they stayed over the airport by using tight turns and steep drops followed by brief level flight. The moves seemed to be completely random. That was the most fun part of the trip. Also, they are not quiet when inside the fuselage. NOTE: I was working as a civilian. Please do not thank me for my service. I was not military.

@@williamstreet4304 under the conditions of which you describe, there is no doubt that the flights were less than thrilling. My brother, who was USAF Security Forces, told me about the nerve-wrecking conditions encountered during supply drop missions to troops at the front lines during the Afghan war(s). Of course, since I was only a small child on an airplane for the very first time in my life, it was the thrill of a lifetime. On the return trip, I even got to climb up to (but not into) the cockpit. I couldn't see much at the time since, for one, we were flying at night, and two, I was a small kid who was restricted to the hatchway while I was looking into the cockpit. Having a favorable perspective or not is always dictated by time and place.

I just wanted to help you with the designations for Air Force military aircraft: C means cargo, and F means fighter. The Hercules is the same aircraft modified to carry the weapons. At the beginning of the Vietnam War, they used WWII vintage cargo C47, also known as Puff the Magic Dragon. The effect of these aircraft was so devastating that enemy troops on the ground were causing them to literally freeze in their tracks because they were so scared of what was about to be unleashed on them. When they fired the Howitzer cannon, the aircraft would disappear in a cloud of smoke for a second. I talked to a weapons officer once, and he told me that the first time he witnessed the effect, he would not even have fired another weapon. Because he was inside the cargo bay, he never saw what firing the weapon looked like.

1967, I was flying down to Danang from Phu Bai, where the aircraft was being loaded with what looked to be an entire village of refugees, including women, children, a few old men, along with some chickens and a few piglets. These folks had never flown before, let alone on a C-130. Everyone was jammed in on bare aluminum pallets, no seats. The aircraft had no creature comforts and was quite noisy on takeoff. That was mildly terrifying to the passengers, but when the landing gear was being raised and the hydraulics started screaming, panic ensued. People were climbing up the walls and falling back down again ... it was raining people. The loadmaster looked bored, as though he'd seen this a thousand times.

The US military uses a naming scheme where prefixes indicate the aircrafts, base role designation and model number, and suffixes that denote submodel varients. Example: AC-130J is broken down like this Prefix: "A", denotes it is in an attack aircraft role Base role: "C-130", C means it's designed role is cargo, and the 130 is its model Suffix: "J", denotes its submodel varient; for example, AC-130J is a different varient of the AC-130 platform than the AC-130U As cluttered as the system looks from the outside, it helps prevent a KC-130J (fuel tanker C-130) from being sent instead of an AC-130J

On a side note - the 130 airplanes are used by the hurricane hunters. They fly these thru the storm and take readings. There is a wing of these in Charleston, WV. The capital of my home state - West Virginia. These are tough, well built, capable, airplanes that can accomplish a host of missions. Once in a while they fly training missions. Very low, tree top level just going fast and low. I guess that makes it harder for the bad guys to shoot them. Great Airplane!!!!! Don't be scared, our countries are on the same side.

The C in C-130 stands for Cargo I believe and is the basic platform. An A designation is for a ground attack platform so and AC-130 is a C-130 modified for a ground attack role. An F designation is reserved for an air to air platform so taking that an F/A 18 is a fighter/Ground attack airplane that can do either or both roles. The F-16 or F-22 are mainly air to air fighters. The B designation would be for a bomber like the B-2.

Courtney the letter part of aircraft designations stand for the role they will fill. F is for fighters, B for bombers, A is for attack, C is for cargo (AC means attack cargo). Theses letters can be combined like with the Hornet designated F/A-18, where that plane covers both the roles of fighter and attack. Both the A-10 Warthog and the AC-130 are considered CAS (close air support) aircraft as they support ground troops in trouble. I believe the other variants of cargo aircraft are fulfilling other cargo-like roles.

The bigger gun is 105 mm. I believe that there is approx. 25 mm. per inch. So this cannon is around a four inch shell. The multi-barrel machine gun is shooting bullets that are about one inch in diameter. If you are the bad guy on the ground and hear this above you. Get right with your god, you will see him in a bit.

The c-130 is the unmodified form of the plane before adding the guns. The A means assault format. Each letter is a slightly different plane but with the same frame. A standard Hercules is designed to hold cargo and drop it at a friendly point somewhere in the world. Though they can hold a bomb of the right size to drop out the back on a rolling sled which they proved by blasting a ISIS stronghold into rubble during the war. An AC-130 has the guns and cannons but there isn’t much room for much else except ammo and tech with the standard paperwork for this plane. The entire cargo area was converted into an ammo holding area but they kept the back door as a loading ramp or the only way to get onto the plane and off.

These are great planes and the gunship variant is powerful but they are vulnerable to ground fire, small anti-air missiles, and even RPGs. For this reason they are rarely used in the daytime for fire support anymore to limit the amount of opportunities for the enemy to target them. You may recall the video you did of the first Medal of Honor ever recorded? One of these is used to fire on the enemy positions during the night while Chapman is inside one of the bunkers and they were still unaware that he was alive.

My first USAF station was home to the 57th ARRS a rescue squadron that flew HC-130Hs. They were modified to include what looked like a pair insect antennae or feelers that would form a V shaped array in the nose area. The purpose being to capture in flight a line attached to a balloon attached to a person floating in a raft on the ocean. The plane would catch, grab and cut the line to release the balloon. The person on the raft immediately accelerated to the plane speed. The line was then captured by a winching mechanism at the rear of the plane and the rescuee pulled in like a fish on a line. An earlier version of this concept can be seen at the close of the James Bond film, Dr No. The plane used there is a WWII B-17 but the concept is the same.

C130 Hercules aircraft are cargo based planes while the AC-130 is a combat aircraft. AC being Aerial combat . AC have the nickname Big Spooky, bur are primarily called Spectre gunships, and are used for close ground support for troops in dangerous zones or missions. Spooky can fly by navigational geo lines . enabling the pilot to pick a spot on the ground as a pivot point and allow the plane to fly around the spot repeatedly with little deviation if any , thus giving the guns the same target picture over and over . All weapons are honed to extreme accuracy and capable of following round per round to a target. Primary deployed at night to allow it to stay in flight without much close air support is usually the operational guideline. When she is overtop you only know by the bangs on the ground and is a very welcome sight to pinned down troops almost as much as an A10. Its not a plane you want to have firing at you as it is possible for it to see heat and radar cross sections as well as thermal penetration underground. Bottom line . Lives p to the name Big Spooky

The AC-130 is a mean machine. It's brutal to ground troops and light-medium armored vehicles. The AC-130 establishes an "orbit" around an area. The gattling gun on the side is comparable to the gattling gun on the A-10 warthog. The AC-130 typically makes one circular orbit of the area where the enemy is and opens fire on them with the gattling gun. If you're in a tent, a regular vehicle, or even a 1 story house, it's over. There's a 100% kill rate for everyone in the area. If you're in a tank, that's what those 105mm cannons are for.

They are kind of quite because the engines are turbo-prop. Which means jet engines turning the props, no piston engines. I know from experience that you don't stand behind one while it is warming up for takeoff. The props are turned flat until they are ready to move. When they engage the props, and are turned to full pitch, it will blow you off of your feet!! The most important thing the C130 gunships can do is target a point on the ground and the fire control will keep all guns aimed at that one point while the plane flies around in a circle. It's really impressive at night with tracers going down in a spiraling circle to one point! Total Devastating the enemy!!

C-130 variants have landed on every continent. There are variants that fly INTO hurricanes to collect weather data. The fact that the guns remind you of a ship is not surprising. The now retired or soon to be retired 40 mm Bofors shown are the same weapons used as antiaircraft guns on naval ships throughout WWII. The Bofors is approaching 80 years old and replacement parts are getting hard to find.

A = Attack B = Bomber C = Cargo F = Fighter H = Helicopter K = Fueler M = Munitions R = Reconasense S = Surveillance T = Trainer U = Utility X = Experimental Y = Prototype The number is where it stands in the queue of same type vehicles when it was first made. The smaller the number the older the model. But every now and then they will start all over with number 1. A good example is the B1 and B2.

Those aircraft are definitely not quiet when inside or nearby. I've ridden in them to get all my jumps in from Airborne school. I've ridden in them when being transported home in legs after being injured in Afghanistan. Worthy of note, is if you can find a video on the C-17, the big brother of the C-130. I didn't hear it in either video, but I believe the AC-130 is actually officially designated as the "Specter" which explains the nickname, "Spooky." And, the green traces you saw in the night footage were tracer rounds. Typical military belt fed rounds have "one-in-five" setups. Which means for every round fired, the fifth is a tracer round to see the path of fire. So, for every streak of light you see, there are four rounds in between that you don't.
@JimAirborne25

Gotta correct myself on one thing. The tracers are "four-to-one" where for every four rounds in the belt, there is one placed in the line.

My Dad was in Viet Nam as an In-Flight Mechanic. He told me many stories of his time there and places we weren't supposed to be. He told me of many occasions where after they delivered a cargo, they would stop at a "major" airport and call the fire department so they could use their high powered hoses to wash out all of the blood and puke and rice out of the back of the plane. He was taught how to fly by his bosses. Now, he's a pretty good pilot. He watched as a 4 inch hole was blown through the bottom and the top of the plane right before his eyes. Barely missing him. He had to crawl back into the tail section to repair the wires that controlled the ailerons so their plane could land. He said it was the most claustrophobic experience he ever had. It also had the added benefit of smelling strongly of puke, since everyone who has to go back there in flight throws up, and it's so far back that it never really gets cleaned up. I have a lot more stories that I'm not able to tell because of secrecy. Let's just say that America isn't always the good guy. We the People want it to be. But, there are other people working against us. And that's all I have to say about that.

There are only two branches of the US military that really use the C-130 anymore. Tie 2 branches are the Air Force and the Coast Guard. The Navy and Marines have both retired the C-130 from their Fleet altogether and the Army doesn't have fixed Wing aircraft they only deal with helicopters.

The story goes during the Vietnam War some US pilots were watching a Australian Bush pilot dropping off and receiving message using the Bush pilots mail system . A bucket on a rope what the pilot did was to drop a bucket on a rope from his spotter plain in the bucket is a sand bag for weight and a cylindrical message container when the bucket hits the ground the pilot puts the plain in a tight circular manner with the bucket the center so a person on the ground could walk upto the bucket get the message and if needed put one back in the pilot would then fly away and pull the bucket back in this is how Bush pilots would deliver mail to ranchers and homesteads in remote areas of Australia. Seeing this the US pilots realised if they mounted guns out the side of a plain and did the same all the guns would be fireing at one point on the ground the first of these was a converted transport DC 3 Dekota the put three 7.62 mini guns that were used on the Cobra gun ship they only had one so putting the or four guns was a lot of gun fire these planes call sign was Puff the magic Dragon they mainly flew at night when the VC attacked fire bases there was one base the VC put under siege for a week without Puff they would of been overrun in the second night at night all the people on the ground could see was the flames from the gun barrels and the raw of them the VC said thay they must be Dragons because it huffed and puffed smoke and flams hence it name .later on they tried another aircraft it was like a C130 but was smaller and had only two engines so ther converted a C130 it was a success so all gun ships from then were C130 they have had some name changes from Puff to spooky to spectre Ghostrider the names are linked to different mode each having upgraded and capabilities

If you notice the AC130 for Attack Cargo and the C130 is just a cargo plane. The clC130A aircraft was first Conmmisiomed in 1956. What You saw in the Video were C130H first Built in the 1980's 4 Blade Propeller Turbo Shaft Engimes Aircraft. The Newer C130J have 6 Blade Propellers with the Newer Engines Lifts More Cargo, are Faster and more Fuel Efficient then the Earlier H Model's. If You look at the Propellers while they're turning. Yiu can tell the Difference Between the two Blade types 4 or 6vBlades. See if zyou can tell by looking at Them. Artical From Google Compared to older C-130s, the J model climbs faster and higher, flies farther at a higher cruise speed, and takes off and lands in a shorter distance. The C-130J-30 is a stretch version, adding 15 feet to the fuselage, increasing usable space in the cargo compartment.

The C130 Hercules has been in production since the 1950's. As the video says, it is used for many different purposes. All US military branches use it. The letter you hear after the C130 - like C130J stands for the model version. The more changes the higher the letter. The current version being made is the J body. Most now are the Super Hercs. The C130's are use for refueling, air transport, search and rescue and the list goes on. I worked at the Lockheed Martin plant that builds them. It is fascinating to see them go down the assembly line and then to be on the flight line for test flights. There are many more videos about the C130. Just about every modern "war movie" will have shots of at least one. The later scenes in the movie Heart Ridge has some real good shots of them.

Yeah Courtney, you kinda nailed the comparison. It's like an old sailing ship firing broadsides...except from the air. It flies around in slow turns and rains down Metal Hell on enemy targets. I don't know if it would be effective against enemy ships, as they generally have sufficient air defenses, but I could see them being able to pound enemy ships pretty good. The C-130 Hercules is the base aircraft. It is the transport variant. The AC-130 is the gunship variant...with the A standing for Assault or Attack. The KC-130 is the refueling tanker version. The AC-130 has gone thru a lot of since Vietnam. Each new variant typically has new armament loadouts, and avionics. And like the video said, the newest version will have flat panel touchscreen displays instead of the analog dial gouges of old.

The Hercules is the name of the plane, C-130 is the DoD aircraft designator. An AC-130 is a modified C-130 for a ground attack role, there have been multiple configurations of AC-130 (A-model, H-model, U-model, W-model and the newest J-model gunships). They are called gunships just like the old Navy ships with guns so you are correct linking the AC-130's with gunships.

Depending on the avionics and the technical capabilities of a aircraft it's given a new number and a new name every time but it still c130, I see 130 spooky refers to the gariness of this aircraft when it's outfitted with artillery. This is the 18 warthogs Big brother, a Cadillac with all the hillbilly family members on board. A Hercules aircraft is a much larger plane with turbo props, the C5 Galaxy a much larger vessel, and the C5 star lifter absolutely ridiculous.
