Phantom Regiment is actually unique when it comes to their hornline set up: Most corps contract 24 baritones, but Phantom has a full section of marching euphoniums (nicknamed the “Buicks!”). They’re much heavier than baritones but they give Regiment a much deeper and darker sound than most drum corps!

@davidgriffin66584 жыл бұрын
Hey Courtney, to answer your question there are four/five types of instruments in a DCI hornline. The soprano (highest) voice is the trumpets. The alto (upper middle) voice is the mellophones. The tenor (lower middle) voice is the baritones/ euphoniums. The bass (lowest) voice is the tubas. Corps usually have a structure of 24 trumpets, 16 mellophones, 24 baritones/ euphoniums and 12 or 16 tubas depending on the corps. The division of baritones/ euphoniums goes corps to corps depending on what the staff want for that year. Some corps have all baritones or all euphoniums and some a mix. Hope this helps.
@scottfritz564 жыл бұрын
what is the difference between a bari and a euph? is it just tone?
@davidgriffin66584 жыл бұрын

The contrabass tuba (contra for short) is the deepest sounding horn in the band, but they're not what you're referring to. They're the giant horns that marchers hold on their shoulder and don't naturally have that much power to them despite their size. A good player can make them loud though. The Baritone/Euphoniums are the powerful, deep sound that you really like. Bari/Euphs sound somewhat similar but the Bari sounds a bit brighter as it's a slightly smaller instrument. I think most corps use Euphs instead of Baris. Mainly because of that powerful sound that everyone loves, but that's not always the case. Sometime's they use both. The middle voices that I personally find the most pleasant (4:58) are the mellophones. But as a mello player I'm biased lol. I am a woodwind player prior who learned how to play brass instruments specifically for the mello though. The mello voice takes the same role as the French Horn in an orchestra, often playing the harmonies and counter melodies (which I find the most fun to play). And the highest voice in the hornline being your classic Bb Trumpet. They tend to play the melodies. They're cool lol.

The Deepest sound comes from the Contras! Basically marching tubas! The second deepest sound is the Euphoniums/Baritones. They Euphoniums and Baritones are actually different, but they play in the same range or same "Deepness" so they are basically in the same category. The third deepest, or second highest is the Mellophones, which play in the middle range. And then the highest are the trumpets, the instrument I play!😂😊 And I would have to agree with you, the big Brass sound is a very powerful and emotional sound! I love your reaction videos! Drum Corps/Marching Brass Instrumentation: ~ *Trumpet* : Highs, "Soprano" ~ *Mellophone* : Highs-Mid ranges, "Alto" ~ *Baritone* : Mid-Low ~ *Euphonium* : Mid-Low (Baritone and Euphonium are very similar. Same mouthpiece and music but the construction is a little different. Euphoniums are much longer and heavier than Baritones but have a slightly timbre. From dark and melodic to aggressive and loud. Sounds like a WW2 bomber when they play loud. lol) The Euphonium line at Phantom call themselves the "Buicks". ~ *Tuba* : Lowest. I mean... they're tubas... They're huge and play super lowwww. Used to be called "Contras" back when DCI was on G Bugles.

i like phantom but I'll be honest i wasn't impressed by this show back when i first saw it lol. The drill from 5:20 to 5:38 is the coolest part for me, leading into the nice mello rip. And the closer was nice. But everything else is fairly simple, music and drill wise. I'll probably get bashed but that's how I feel lol

It’s true, and too many ballad pieces. They use the Rota piece from the 60s Romeo and Juliet movie which is kind of a cheesy song, but it’s ok here.

Tiredness.. a lot of that is down to many different variables... how does the corps trave? Do they have decent buses with good air conditioning? Housing site? Do they have good facilities that allows for good rest and recovery? Good showers? How does the corps eat? Do they have a professionally trained sports medicine staff? And of course.. rehearsal. There is a balance that needs to be struck between good rehearsal that is effective and pushes the members physically to build stamina but not do them out as well. And of course.. there's show design. Smart show design has ebbs and flows that allows the performers to hammer it out for 11 and a half minutes but has enough "down" moments to allow for brief spells of recovery. All of the above is often the difference between being in the Top 12 and not. When you look at the talent pool that corps have to choose from, even corps in the high teens and low twenty places are pretty stacked talent wise. But also, like someone else said, the crowd and adreniline helps quite a bit as well. I marched 7 years of DCI and 4 of DCA and I can honestly say I was never once tired DURING a show but almost always, I was completely DONE afterwards.

I feel like with your interest in the military you would be interested in a drum corps called The Cadets. I'm sure you've heard of them by now but they are based off of the West Point Cadets and that's clear with the uniforms they wear (or that they used to wear I mean). I'd look into them their shows are very unique and the corps has a lot of powerful history and tradition behind them. FHNSAB LSTTV
