This haka was originally performed as a protest against Ta Apirana Ngata, who introduced alcohol prohibition in the East Coast so that money wasted on beer at the pubs would instead go towards paying back the mortgages on dairy farms he helped establish. He would often lead this haka, despite it being an attack on him, so I guess he gradually 'owned' this haka over time. As far as I'm aware, the composer of the 'Poropeihana' section is unknown. The other sections are borrowed from other haka.
