In that last post, I got carried away and forgot the original reason I came to post on here! i just wanted to say what an absolutely fantastic rendition of the NZ national anthem that is. All that feeling and passion and brilliant vocal harmonisation! So uplifting - almost brought tears to my eyes! The All blacks must have felt like they were already 10 points ahead after that.

JJ Woods set the words of Thomas Bracken's 'God Defend New Zealand' poem to music as part of a competition in the 1870s. There are 5 verses. 'God Save The Queen' is NZ's other official anthem.

Love this anthem, and I am happy to say it was written by an Irish man from my very home town Clones, Co Monaghan, Ireland. 'The words for "God Defend New Zealand" were written as a poem in the 1870s by Irish immigrant Thomas Bracken of Dunedin, a freemason

This is the coolest National Anthem, it's sung in the Maori language and shows great respect to the native New Zealanders! We here in the U.S. have a lot to learn.

@meL0n11 Yes, the verse is done in Maori, and then it starts again in English and continues in English. The full length Anthem is actually pretty long, this is the one the majority knows of though.

One of the better National Anthems. And New Zealand was one of the first to place the original language of their land (Maori) prominent at the commencement of their traditional standard. Well done Kiwis.

Dear people of New Zealand In the next 4 years the people of Scotland will vote in a referendum to decide if they want to be an independent country, free from the United Kingdom. Please show your support for my countries INDEPENDENCE by giving this comment a thumbs up. Thank You From SCOTLAND. Long May Scotland & New Zealand Prosper ! P.S. You may even get a new flag if we become independent as the Union Jack will no longer be a recognised Flag.

@ecocotier For a very long time there have been a minority of Scottish people who have never liked the UK and wanted to become independent but now that minority is turning into a majority of Scots. It's not about not liking the UK, it's more about self determination. Scotland was a country before and we can be again. If New Zealand with a similar geographical size and population can be independent, then so can Scotland :)

Mind you, I had a minor accident wearing All blacks jersey in Cairns, Queensland, but I blame it on my guide who said I wouldn't have any problems! Still, people were extremlly nice! But, me being from Croatia, New Zealand is not the easiest place to get to!

Both our countries will be commemorating ANZAC Day in a few hour's time and at our local service in Sydney, we sing both National Anthems, including the Maori lyrics to be sung by a wonderful ex-pat Maori singer. I'll be singing along with her. Thoughts and prayers to all of our NZ friends as we mark this most important day of our nation's calendar and the firm alliance we share.

I always have to laugh to myself when I read or hear people say "_All_ [insert race / nationality here] are ignorant prejudiced racist trash." That phone call is from your buddy Kettle, Mr. Pot. E Ihoa Atua is one of the best anthems in the world - I should know, I've heard 7 of them performed at sports events in the home country. Anyone else knocking either the US or NZ say that? Then come talk to me. Til then, small lesson - people is people everywhere. We ain't all that different.

@indiebhoy It is? Is that something to do with our unwritten constitution or perhaps our royal flag is historically our "national flag"? I do feel reassured to know that if the unthinkable happens I wont have to live under St Georges Cross. Also many countries have St George and presumably his cross. Any idea why England is represented by Georges Cross in the Union Jack? Oh and sorry I assume I come off as a pathetic petty nationalist, I just really don't want to see my country split in twain
@Bloomazz
@Bloomazz 13 жыл бұрын
@glasgow1234 I'm sorry but "seeing" countries doesn't make them so. Scotland has not and will not vote to leave the union. The Union Jack would remain as it is in the event however as the precedence has been set when Ireland left the union. It also makes sense in the fact my family down the years fought and died under that banner and through it we pay respect to all of the British soldiers who died. It may surprise you but the union jack is not a tired rag. New Zealanders can be proud to have it
@Bloomazz
@Bloomazz 13 жыл бұрын
@glasgow1234 Who says that it wont be a recognised flag? I think we countrymen, we fine British gentlemen of this great island chain we were born can atleast agree the flag shall remain. If need be we English(and welsh) will take on the mantle of the Union Jack and all the honour it brings, just as we did when Ireland was taken by the forces of circumstance and opportunity. PS, I wont degrade myself by begging for "thumbs up" my patriotism is firmer than that.

@sadie46A It's not a dumb question at all. NZ has 3 official languages - English, Maori and NZ Sign Language. It's been common now to sing the national anthem in both English and Maori for quite a while. Maori, being a vowel based language, sounds particularly appropriate in song. As for NZ sign language, they have just started showing it on tv but there's actually a person signing the national anthem. It's to demonstrate both Maori and Pakeha (white) cultures and language in NZ.

@JOSHTRUS Firstly most Aborigines don't speak their native languages anymore and the ones that claim to is just some shitty pidgin of English. And secondly, Maori can be on the whole mutually intellible throughout nz, whereas aboriginal languages are completley different on one side of aus from the other, having an aboriginal language in our anthem would only respresent like 0.00001 of the population

@schneke1 new south wales, tasmania and queensland were originally convict settlements, Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria started out as free settlements. WA (where I come from) had "ticket of leave" convicts (not-very-naughty convicts) from 1851 to 1879 in order to deal with the chronic labour shortage of the times. Mind you, isnt it also true that the New Zealand colony was originally an outpost of the New South Wales colony? :) :) :)

Hi guys. I am an English guy married to a Welsh girl, and this has taught me a lot about nationalist issues. I have to say that some of the comments below make me feel a little uncomfortable. It doesn't tend to go down well when someone from one country tries to lecture or dictate to another where their loyalties should lie. Mutual respect and understanding of cultural differences and national identities has to be the best way. We can all enjoy our own and other countries without falling out.

Response to Valldaran God Defend New Zealand has profound verses. It's a pity they don't sing the latter verses. And I'm not from NZ or have ever even been remotely close to NZ. "Let peace not war be our boast But should foes assail our coast Make us then a mighty host God defend New Zealand Lord of battles in thy might Put our enemies to flight MAY OUR CAUSE BE JUST AND RIGHT God defend New Zealand" Profound! Fantastic anthem. Cheers from New York

I think most Western countries have a problem with racism but it usually takes the form of xenophobia, especially since the face of NZ cultural makeup is changing so fast. NZ does have a high tax rate and high interest rate making it difficult for mortgages but hoping we have a change of govt. later this year to incentivise business, tax cuts etc.
