My ex is a kiwi. He was toxic/troubled and gave me a really negative outlook on NZ. I'm here so I can remind myself not to put all the eggs in the same basket. There are a lot of very repressed and lonely people in NZ. There are high rates of depression and a cultural inability for people to express themselves in healthy ways. There is a lot of alcohol abuse. People are taught to bottle their emotions and periodically explode.

The fact Kiwis don't like to say "no" reminds me a lot about japanese culture, where saying "no" is viewed as pretty agressive and unpolite... For what regards optimism, I wish we could be a little bit more like that in France, because I must confess I'm sick and tired of people complaining all over the day, always criticizing and always negative BUT (because there's always a but with the French^^) too much optimism can become naivety, in the sense that pessimism can have some good too : it makes you realize the world we live in is still full of injustices and that it's not because you're happy that everyone is happy and that you have to be conscious of that and see what you can make to make the society better and contribute to improve the world... The "small poppy syndrome" makes me think a lot about Scandinavian countries, in which you mustn't boast too much or show you're better than the other... Anyway, great video, as always !! I hope it turned out well for you. The Australian/New Zealand relationship is nothing like the Canadian/American one. I am not sure about the Austria/Germany comparison, but what Canada is to the US actually has almost no analogue around. I not think even Belgium/France compares to the Canadians and the Americans. Canadian culture is almost indistinct from the Americans. Canadian TV shows are littered with American cultural references (even their most famously "Canadian" TV shows like Corner Gas). They play American sports, follow American teams. Meanwhile you watch a New Zealand TV show, it is NOT going to drop references to Australian culture/history in general conversation (though there are Australian TV shows available). Even the Welsh and the English are not as similar culturally as the Canadians and the Americans. I have been told that this is because the vast majority of Canadian live along the Border so will often get actual American TV channels. Aussies and Kiwi's are like sibling cultures. Americans and Canadians are like Parent-Child cultures.

I went to New-Zealand at least 8 times and every time I left I had this kind of twinge of sorrow. I'm a Californian who just spent 3 weeks in New Zealand, it was such a lovely experience. Incredibly beautiful, with delightful people. Three quirky things we noticed while traveling the South Island, a lot of young hitch hikers, people wearing shorts and flip-flops in rainy weather, and shoeless well-dressed men. My wife first noticed a shoeless man in a Countdown grocery market and was confused. lol. Right on, thanks for talking about it in this video! I can dig it, let those dogs get some fresh air! :D

Saw your video on French culture and it was wonderful. Even though I studied French and the history, it was wonderful to see another outsider's point of view. My husband and I are planning a trip to NZ in March. We've heard nothing but wonderful things. As to "conflict avoidance", you see this in the US, in particular between West Coast and East Coast (north-east, Boston, NYC, Philadelphia), where the west coast tends to avoid more conflict and the east coast "says it like it is". Even though they don't normally mean to be insulting, they can come off abrasive - but at least they don't hide behind their words. Thank you so much for your lesson on Kiwi culture.

Re: fashion, I started wearing Hawaiian shirts as a piss-take on our office manager's day off each week after she said I needed more colour. It ultimately got a bit out of hand as the next two companies I worked at have basically treated it as a work uniform and I get a lot of shit if I wear anything else. Is "tall poppy syndrome" the same thing as "le panier de crabes" (crab mentality or crabs in a bucket)? Because I think France suffers heavily from the latter, hence so many ambitious innovative young entrepreneurs having to expatriate themselves in order to be able to succeed. The "tall poppy" thing maybe seems a little more superficial and benign compared to the "crab mentality" (which often encompasses the former).

After living in New Zealand for three years, I have a couple of extra things to add to the list. New Zealanders are extremely proud of their country and so the tall puppy syndrome does not apply to talking about talking up their own country. My nieces were shocked when I told them that New Zealand was not my favourite country to visit or live in. A second point is if you’re living in New Zealand you’re going to take a hit to your standard of living. Moving from Canada to New Zealand required me to take a 49% wage cut, doing the same job. The third point is New Zealand houses do not have central heating or insulation and many of them do not have vapour barriers. Coming from Canada I found that a New Zealand winter was far colder than a Canadian winter because of this it was a real shock to the system! The fourth point is the New Zealand communication pattern is different from the North American communication pattern. This I mean that New Zealand tend to talk over each other when they’re speaking and at least In canada that’s a real cultural no-no. I constantly had to remind myself that they were not being rude to me, it’s just a culture thing. but when you’re in the middle of making a point and somebody just starts talking over top of you, it really made my blood boil.

Kiwi Here: We love our sports and outdoors but I think a lot more people don't care a lot for rugby but do it for social interactions, we watch 'The big games', the finials and events. One other thing I found beside all your reviews is that NZ people do not really enjoy it if you complain about their country, like every thing is more expensive than your previous country of residence , or they have limited backgrounds and history or limited variety in products. Kiwis also really want to enjoy their life so they don't usually choose challenging life paths which has caused in shortage of doctors, PhD graduates and physics /math teachers.

Something not mentioned in the video about the New Zealand people is the work culture, non-tipping culture, health care and education. Kiwis value balance between work and family/leisure time. It's not uncommon to see everyone in the workplace down-tools, turn off machinery etc and leave when the end-of-shift time rolls around. Any work left incomplete can wait till tomorrow with very few exceptions. My understanding is that Americans will often work on or even come in to work on their days off in order to complete tasks. American companies are able to blackmail workers into working during their own time because of a fear of losing their jobs and their health insurance. This can't be done to the same degree in New Zealand because we have free health care - free hospitals, free lab diagnostics, free x-rays/CAT scans etc., free surgery and other procedures. Medications currently cost $NZ5 per item for 3 months supply. My GP costs $NZ18 per visit with free follow-up visits for the same ailment. Specialists are seen through a referral system from your GP and are also free. Accidents are covered by a universal insurance called the ACC (You cannot sue anyone for accidents but your treatment is covered). If you can't work after an accident the ACC will pay 80% of your regular earnings till you recover and return to work. Specialists, surgeons, physios etc are all paid by ACC. Education to high-school level is free and university courses are very inexpensive. Workers in service jobs like waiters, waitresses, deliveries etc. are all paid a decent living wage (currently in excess of $NZ 21 per hour) There are a few expat Americans with youtube channels who help people move to NZ from the US - check them out'

Now please don't think I'm a pessimist, arrogant fighter though.. ;-) Anyway, do these cultural aspects also lead to a tendency toward risk/problem avoidance (or even denial of issues) in a business situation? Perhaps even expecting people to be "optimistic" as an excuse to not having to admit a potential problem even exists? Perhaps even calling someone like me pessimist, even if (as an engineer) a big part of my job description is to identify risks or problems with a product or software development environment. How will my colleagues/manager respond if I raise the alarm bells about the quality of a product the company produces when I think they are taking huge (unnecessary and/or even irresponsible) risks? (Although I seriously don't consider myself that special, I do tend to stand out a bit which is not something I'm proud of but it just happens because I just care a great deal about my job, and doing it right, and when I see that a product I'm working on is just getting butchered by the team, then that hurts a lot and it's even gotten me into trouble before.) How would such a situation be handled correctly (if at all) in a NZ business?

I disagree with your comment on the term tall poppy syndrome, it really about not being a braggart about your successes like Americans do. Be successful (ie blossom well) but don't be a show-off about it. It's not about preventing innovation and new ideas but an attitude of humility and not being such a braggart about it. New Zealanders appreciates an innovative person like Peter Beck - of Rocket Labs who has been successful but in a way that's not "tall poppy" like. I think there's a basic misunderstanding of the term "tall poppy" even among New Zealanders. A tall poppy is a successful person who LOOKS DOWN on others, instead of PULLING UP and encouraging others to succeed. Thus a tall poppy is a selfish braggart who looks down on others for not being as successful as they are.

I'm not sure I understand. On the one hand, Kiwis are straight forward communication-wise, but on the other hand, they're avoidant and will hesitate to say "no" if they aren't interested?

Perrais Axel I thought she did a great job of explaining this. Specifically if they are asked to do something they will give you a "soft no". They are saying no, but don't it very delicately. Basically, if you do not hear a definitive "yes" then the answer is no. When it comes to them making a comment or stating an onion they are very honest in their responses.

But NZ has a lower suicide rate per capita than the US and many European countries. All the same, one suicide is one too many. Maybe the overhaul of the mental health sector and more resourcing will see these numbers drop.

The tall poppy syndrom and the conflict avoidance is definitely something that I noticed here in Quebec, Canada. In part because of that, I used to think that French people were rude and sometimes a bit aggressive and very critical but they just speak their mind and don't seem to mind being a ''tall Poppy''. My boyfriend is French and I work for a french multinational here in Montreal with many french nationals and I actually learn from them to speak my mind more and to disagree when necessary! :D
