Ben (and other NZ youth) have systematically torn us older Kiwi bowlers a new one over recent years... it's equal parts inspirational and terrifying to be on the lanes with those guys. Ben works incredibly hard to be as good as he is, and at such a young age he has the world in front of him. Watch this space.

Hey I have a question for you and it's for my bowling game. I just have the tendency to bring my right hand back when I go to my follow through. How can I get away from it? It's getting me some bad pin count and when my ball goes through the middle part of the lane. I tend to leave big splits like yesterday I left the big four aka double penuchle.

I bowled against him at the ANC last year where he destroyed some of the best Aus and NZ had to offer and Kyle and Jesper whom were also playing in our teams event. Mark my words, Ben is great now.... but will finish as the GOAT as long as he does not give it away in his 20s after getting bored beating everyone.

From Packy's reply when someone else asked - "It's painter's tape the Shocker bowling team uses to visualize entry angle. The far piece of tape is set at 6 degrees into the pocket, and the closer piece is set at four degrees. Ideally, you want your ball to follow the path between those two pieces of tape into the pocket to get the highest carry percentage"

I'm a huge fan of the All Blacks. Rugby is a great game to watch. One of my bowling shirts is customized for my love of rugby and the All Blacks. On the back I have Kapa O Pango written on it, which in Maori means "the team in black", or the All Blacks. If you've never seen it, before every test the All Blacks perform a traditional Maori haka. They have their own, Kapa O Pango. It sends chills up your spine. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2TKk6GbedlgiZY

The is some centres that for them running it is for the public and not for the league bowlers. Talking about super low oil volumes. Techs that can’t tell if the machine has put oil on the lane. No preventative maintenance. Old machines. Then there is the centre that Ben bowls at. Owned and operated by an experienced NZ representative bowler who knows bowling and they have got it right. We need more like him running centres

i remember when i was in a bowling league from 11-13,, ALMOST good enough to bowl with adults, and one thing i remember the most is the way you guys are bowling were considered like the 20 year old or the guy that was "too old to still be bowling" at the bowling alley in this town, trying to look "strong/cool" then i'd watch PBA and remember it wasn't allowed to bowl like that... then a few years ago i turn on the TV and first thing i see is a dude bowling like that and idk why... i don't understand the point because you can get just as much curve with middle/ring + thumb and you can put the weight inside the bowling ball to curve that much... plus the way you roll it. so I'm extremely confused by this style of bowling. it looks like its going to cause tremendous back problems later on in life... seriously. however, i am asking a genuine question because i wasn't joking. NO ONE did this in the PBA, and they were averaging close to 300. i wish i could remember names from 20 some years ago but there was this one guy that was ALWAYS 1 to 3 strikes from hitting 300, the other frames would be spares or god forbid they get the deadliest 7-10. which, amazingly, i've also seen be taken down in PBA a few times. but i can only remember ONE distinct time and it was one of the coolest things i had seen. you gotta understand when i was younger, the only few things to do in this small ass town, back when people HAD MONEY to even go out to do anything that didn't involve "getting into trouble" or "doin work" if you follow, there was an outdoor theatre (packed every weekend, which was the only time it opened for 2 days, MAYBE 3? i'm not 100% on sunday) then there was a Skating Rink and Bowling Alley (owned by the same guy, went to school with his daughter). My dad got me into bowling. Back in the day you could drink beer and smoke at the lanes. then they phased out smoking AT the lanes to smoking AT the bowling ball rack which was just 10 feet back from the seats/scoreboard table... which i USED to know how to keep score on pencil and paper but fk me, not anymore, once they switched to digital score keeping it's like i tilted my head and all that information fell out lol... so that's just another question (1: Why do so many MORE people roll balls that sideways 2 hander weird style now and 2: how the hell do you keep score if you were to use pen/paper or pencil/paper) We also have a regular movie theatre. Hell, I remember before the SUPER Wally world (walmart) was just a REGULAR one. we really are a "small 'big city'" according to the demographics. We have between 13-14k sometimes 15k people living here but there's ... quite literally nothing to do. When i was down and out, I talked to the girl's dad that i went to school with, got a job working for him, since i grew up bowling, application was for bowling alley, and that didn't go well. He literally drug tested me and sent me to the PoS Skating Rink where it was just a big ass day-care where WE weren't allowed to do anything in terms of discipline... so single moms of 8 kids by 8 diff dudes would just drop them off there all damn day and they'd be absolutely wild and wouldn't LISTEN to anything. I'd be nice all day shift and night shift long but it didn't matter.... when you're swarmed by 5-8 kids at the food counter (where you get candy, drinks, pizza slices [or you used to be able to, i don't think they even had those anymore] but man ole dude's businesses were tanking before he screwed me over and his employees lied on my name).
@daydreamers8254
@daydreamers8254 9 ай бұрын
First, he MADE me get a drug test to work at that skating rink, when I told him i had no desire to work there, I wanted to work at the bowling alley I GREW UP AT. Being a small town, being i went to school from Pre-K to 12th with his kid, you'd think he'd place me at the bowling alley... no drug test. either way I passed cuz i wasn't doing drugs like EVERYONE THOUGHT. not even smoking weed... what i DID NOT know was that once you went to take your drug test, you had X amount of time to do it or you'd have to go back to your potential employer and get another form and he told me he's spend over $200 ($240 total since they're $120/ea) just hiring me... I think that's why he stuck me over there OPENING the EXTERIOR DOOR. I was a "glorified" doorman for little kids. They'd get mad at me for BEING OUTSIDE in sometimes single digit weather and having a cigarette which, i DID ask him, "is it ok to have a cigarette outside? if NO ONE is around, would that be a problem?" He said "I don't see why not." Well when you put a cigarette out that you're not done smoking, it does have a hint of seeds'n'stem old ass pot. the kind that i haven't seen in 15-18 yrs... so naturally, the obese white lady who thought she was gods gift to earth would go to boss man and tell him I would come in ALL the time smelling like pot... even though i passed a drug test. Then they hired ANOTHER GUY and on his FIRST DAY in the skate shoe room, he legit asks me, "you smoke? i got that killer dank." and ole dude was REEKING OF IT. if he walked somewhere, it left a trail behind him. now i got NOTHING against pot. my problem was and still is being accused of doing something i didn't do AND NOT doing something that I DID DO (i.e. staying drug free, including pot when this bitch said i was coming in high and smelling like weed... when they literally just hired a pot head dealer). that's when it all started. Easiest way to settle that would be to drug test me and then fire her lying ass. She also complained that I spent "too much time outside." -- uh that was MY JOB according to the boss. "Stand outside and open the door for the dozen or so guests we get for the weekends..." he didn't say a # but that was literally what it was... 10-12 people would show up and like i said all kids.... it wasn't like it was back in the day, JAM PACKED wall to wall, girls everywhere, switching gf's every weekend or every other. shuffle skating was so much fun on quads. especially if you had a line of people doing it. the frontman would throw a hand signal and we'd have these moves memorized and it was just fun as hell. contests, like "shoot-the-duck" where you'd go around and get as much speed as possible and then go down on one leg while extending the other leg out forward and holding it. whoever stopped last won. though we had a lot of cheaters who would cheat 1 of 3 ways. two ways were using your rolling foot and pushing the front wheels with your fingers once most everyone was down n out, and everyones going slllooooow trying to out frontwheel finger push the other, aka cheater vs cheater. then someone found a spot at the far right end away from the DJ box which was nearly ceiling high or it is, as you had to go up steps in a single story building... so you'd turn your back to that, and finger push on the wheels cuz if any part of you touched the ground you're out. and when someone found that top right spot on the skating floor, there was a DIP in the new foundation (idk what you'd call it in the skating rink business but it wasn't a wooden floor) anyways, so there's a dip and it would give you a minor boost if you were going slow, so you'd practice to know your bearings speed and at a certain point you could line it up to hit that minor decline to get a game winning boost that was NOT noticeable by the skybox and then even when they put judges on the floor they didn't know bout that trick but the finger pushing basically got 86'd unless you were exceptionally good at hiding it. such as this one girl wrapping her leg sometimes around her ground foot "for balance reasons" as she tried to justified cheating meanwhile if you're infront of her you could see those fingers pushing the front wheels like no tmrw. another fantastic game was the "limbo game" but on skates. i think the coolest 2 wins i've seen that weren't me was this TINY little girl who MUST have taken ballet also, she was able wrap her body up low enough and then at a point where it was too low to do that she could do a side split and roll that way. anyone who was older than her, which i think she was only 9 or 10 at the time and even after puberty it took a while for her to hit a growth spurt.. only know this cuz me and her brother were close friends. she also used the cheat in shoot-the-duck game, where in this case its "legal" i guess just so long as you didn't touch the floor with your hands, any body part that wasn't skates, etc. she'd push one leg out in a half split, then left leg would be straight down, bent at the knee, then pushed out to the left at the end and she'd use the front wheel push. i'll say this, i hated and loved playing against her cuz she was legit the only competition. since i took karate and then later tae kwon do, skateboarding, and skated quads, as well as i guess genetics? i was extremely flexible for a guy so i could the hip movements. where the move before halfsplit was doing both hips going out and ducking your head super low to your skates. that'd only work to the 4,5,6. once at 3 you'd have to pull off some ballet miracle or some sorta split. anyway. point is, they falsely accused me of smoking pot. never proved it. i get fired. prior to that the owner would let me bowl as many free games as i wanted.

and since i lost my custom bowling ball from when i was in the league as a child (now working there in my early 20s) they screwed me over by sticking at me at the skating rink... opening doors for brats. then eventually inside. working a bit of EVERYTHING. this dude was trying to make money EVERY WAY HE COULD cuz he was sinking fast. i'm talking to the point of selling pickles and saving the pickle juice to then put them in the ketchup paper cups right? freeze them but you had to put a toothpick in once it was slushy status and then continue to freeze it until 100%. they sold for 50cent, called "pickle pops" when they weren't worth anything above a dime... they sold the most. back in MY DAY when we went, you could order 1-2 slices of tombestone pizza, a drink, and something else, can't remember, i think fries (since that seems the most logical) or POPCORN that's right. they had SO MANY OPTIONS back then man... and like i said, that place was bumpin. it was the place to be in the 80s and 90s and early 00s. but around 2005-2008 is when it tanked. i wish when i was working there, i still had my own custom bowling ball and bowling shoes like i did when i was in the league, not even children's league, youth-adult league since my AVG was 163 and i'd hit 200 on occasion. my BAD days would be 120-140, good days 140-170, amazing days 170-200. hit 200 half a dozen times at 12-13. then we lost everything (family stuff won't go into) but they got their karma - the business owner once they wrongfully terminated me without drug testing me, hired a drug dealer who came in smelling like REAL POT not a snuffed out cig... oh and as for "talking to ppl outside" i was NEVER on my phone like her fatass was 24/7 all shift she'dliterally sit in the sky box / dj booth. never saw her work anything but her arm to eat and other arm to use phone. never seen her clean, cook, or handle registers. they literally hired a drug dealer after i passed a drug test. STAYED able to pass drug test the entire time i was there cuz i did NOT wanna give up FREE BOWLING, are you kidding? that was my dream as a kid, to get to bowl for free. sadly i had to use house balls and house shoes (gross). whenever i'd go to the bowling alley... the MOST people there would either be birthdays for 5 year olds.... or senior citizen league... when we had league days/nights (the league days would be ALL DAY and sometimes into the evening and rarely into the night) then League Night were for tournaments, 3 days in a row. Fri/Sat/Sun Within 2 weeks of firing me with no notice, no legitimate reason, they went out of business at not just the skating rink, but also the bowling alley. And damnit, third time i've brought up the "talking aspect" - PART of my door opening job was to "welcome / greet people, say have a good time, be safe, yada yada yada." The only time I deviated was when someone ASKED a question and I'd answer it. Just so happened the one time that EVER happened the ole bitch came out and said "You NEED to GET BACK TO WORK!" There were less people in there than i have fingers... we had more staff than skaters... like wtf work am i doing? Opening doors for NO ONE? But i remembered it was closing time so she meant take out the trash. For whatever reason the trashcans were on the OPPOSITE end of the ENTIRE parking lot... which whatever, free work out and np. they were LIGHT compared to EVERY kitchen i've worked for... but what pissed me off the most, as i've said a million times, was losing the free bowling. second only to NOT working at the bowling alley where i wanted to work, where i applied to work, where the owner knew i LOVED that place.. Cuz not only was I in the league, my oldman was in a league too... we even did the father-son league and kicked ass. Bothered me so much he shoved me at a place notoriously known for little brats and he fell victim to the rumor mill about me.... which is down right PATHETIC for a grown ass man with children my age, early-mid 20s... so sad. Now the bowling alley is called something else (we used to have the coolest name since we live in NC aka North Carolina) and it was called "Carolina Lanes." may not be cool to you or you or the next person but i liked it. showed pride in our state and whatever. moving on... i miss the old days. so much.
