Correct decision (as per 2002 rules), he had clearly dropped the bat.

That's debatable. You will not find anything about the lawbook about this (certainly not in any edition that existed in 2002), so it would have been equally valid to interpret the law as requiring control of the bat and not merely contact with the bat. Besides, an end on camera angle may show that there was no contact with the bat at the crucial moment Having just had another look, you cannot even tell if it is in contact with the glove - the glove is open and you can only tell it is between the thumb and the index finger @@JackBarrBaxter

@@amireallythatgrumpy6508 Without definitive evidence to say the batsman is out, shouldn't the benefit go towards him? As you say, it's debatable, so this is not out for me. Based on the images here, the umpire can't be sure, so I can't see how this was given out. With today's cameras, I'm sure it would have been resolved more concretely. Perhaps I was harsh in my initial assessment, but I stand by my opinion that this should not have been given.

Completely different scenario. Vaughan was standing outside the crease. Vettori was within his rights to have a go at the stumps. Though the 3rd umpire's decision was wrong.
