It has been proved since ages that whenever you got a low target to chase during world cups, just chase it down as fast as you can and make your NRR better and better. You never know when lady luck can stop showering her favors on you. Happened with this WI team where they got kicked out of first round after winning 3 out of 5 games and same Kiwis got through to super six. I observed this in T20 WC 2020 ( played in 2021) in UAE as well where SA got out of the world cup even after winning 4 out of the 5 group stage games...They made the same blunder too when they had to chase 84 or something against Bangladesh and they took 15 overs for it..

The sad part for the windies is that against Bangladesh and Newzealnd they batted slow , if they were a bit more clever and blasted those matches like they did against scotland they could have made it to the super six , NewZealand went to the Semis but to be fair they did play well in this world cup they beat Australia and India and also the Minnows.Windies had two outstanding performers , Walsh and Ridley Jacobs , I still remember that day at Manchester , Glen Mcgrath getting out Brian Lara.

Exactly, the NRR of Australia was just marginally better than the WI in the group stages, courtesy their comprehensive win over the WI. Else, they too were under criticism for batting slowly to ensure victory against a minnow like Scotland and were in such a state that they had to by default win ALL of its Super Six games to reach the semis.

@@Timberwolf1992 I agree but it made their players all lift their games , especially the Waugh twins , Mark Waugh got a hundred against India and Steve Waugh got a hundred against South Africa, to me I really wanted to see South Africa play Pakistan in the final , I still remember that day Saeed Anwar hitting two awesome fours before being bowled out by fleming, the Pakistan players also batted as if they never played spin bowling. Too me the semi final was actually the final.All the greats in that game stood up , Pollock with 5fer , Donald with four , S Waugh scoring a 50 with Bevon , and who could forget Shane Keith Warne with that 4 wickets , I also think Warne is a great showman , that ball to gibbs caused panic , you could tell warne was pumped and that ball rattled the SA players , if it was a crap LBW he would have not been effective but he got the opposition thinking , he bowled out Kirsten and that ball to Cronje , yes it hit the boot but you need luck.Great game .I will always remember lance Klusner.

How the hell they didn't manage to qualify is beyond me till date. I covered entire world cup as it eas Summer Hoilday time. Each game, venue and events i remember like it were yesterday. The great 2 Cs were in their last legs nursing young buds Dillon and King but still performing themselves. The thinktank wanted not to do the mistake as they did in 1996 with holder and Harper playing as specialist hence deicided Williams and Simmons would be the middle order bailouts in case a collapse alas they didnt fire at all. Chanderpaul should have been number 3 with Adams and Simmons at 5,6. Jeez how do i sum up ... wonderful days of life as true cricket fan.

I neve quite understood the role of Phil Simmons - he wasn't the best opener and bowled occassionally. Yes, his seam up must have been helpful in these conditions but as an opener he wouldn't play out the good bowlers or attack them - he seemed unsure of his role.
