this is a very old system and was commonly used on WW 2 bombers such as the Ju 88 and the Mosquito. In those aircraft, the steel washers, known as belleville washers, were concave and faced each other, between the rubber pucks. the advantage is that it is very tough and doesnt need to be serviced like an oleo strut.
