Kharjati is a drum composition of the navabājā repertoire of Bhaktapur, Nepal. It proceeds in four different stages. The first two compositions Kharjati and Partāl is set in 7/4 measures, then followed by Dhamāk in 14/4 and finally Calti in 4/4. Among navabājā pieces, Kharjati has become almost forgotten. The shawm melodies accompanying this piece in accordance with the different seasons are almost extinct. We are trying to revive these from earlier recordings and are planning another recording session including the shawm. Besides its tonal and compositional distinction the double headed cylindrical drum Pachimā looks very similar to the north Indian drums Pakhābaj and south Indian drums Mirdangam.
