Newbie How to Install LED Worklights and Wiring Harness Kit to the BRP Can-Am Defender Side-by-Side

Adding LED worklights to your BRP Can-Am Defender side-by-side recreational vehicle can greatly enhance visibility and safety during nighttime or low-light conditions. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the process of installing LED worklights and a wiring harness kit, ensuring a professional and secure installation.

The LED worklights and wiring harness kit were purchased at princess auto and meant for off-road or large vehicles. This meant that the wiring needed to be to the battery directly as opposed to wire to key power to the buss bar located behind the dash. This was due to the lencth of the wire as the harness kit has everything sealed and split. I didn't want to ruin the kit by making cuts and such
Required Tools and Materials:
- 2 xLED worklights
- Wiring harness kit (inline fuse, switch, and pre-spit for 2 lights w/ quick connects)
- BRP rear accessory bar
- Wire cutters
- Wire strippers
- Electrical tape
- Cable ties
- Drill with various drill bits
- Step drill bit
- Screwdriver set
- Fish tape or stiff wire
- Heat shrink tubing (optional)
Step 1: Installing the BRP Rear Accessory Bar
1. Identify the suitable location on the rear of your Can-Am Defender for mounting the BRP rear accessory bar. Ensure it provides a stable and secure platform for your worklights.
2. Use a screwdriver or appropriate tools to attach the accessory bar securely to the vehicle frame following the manufacturer's instructions.
Step 2: Wiring the Worklights along the Inside Cage
1. Determine the number and placement of the LED worklights Ensure they are evenly spaced and properly oriented.
2. Route the wiring harness along the inside of the cage, securing it with cable ties at regular intervals to prevent it from sagging or getting tangled.
3. Connect the wiring harness to each LED worklight, ensuring a solid electrical connection. Use wire connectors or solder and heat shrink tubing to secure the connections for added durability.
Step 3: Cutting a Notch in the Battery Cover
1. Locate the battery cover on your Can-Am Defender and determine the appropriate location for routing the wiring harness to the battery compartment.
2. Use a drill with a suitable drill bit to create a small notch or hole in the battery cover. Ensure the size of the notch is sufficient to allow the wiring harness to pass through while maintaining a weatherproof seal.
Step 4: Wiring the Cable to the Battery
1. Identify the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals on your vehicle's battery.
2. Connect the positive wire from the wiring harness to the positive terminal of the battery and secure it tightly.
3. Connect the negative wire from the wiring harness to the negative terminal of the battery and secure it tightly.
4. Use electrical tape or heat shrink tubing to insulate and protect the wire connections, ensuring they are shielded from moisture and other elements.
Step 5: Fishing the Remaining Wire and Switch via the Channel and Behind the Dash
1. Locate a suitable channel or path behind the dash of your Can-Am Defender where you can route the remaining wire from the worklights to the front of the vehicle.
2. Attach a fish tape or a stiff wire to the end of the wiring harness and gently guide it through the channel, ensuring it doesn't get tangled or obstructed.
3. Slowly pull the wire through the channel until it reaches the front of the vehicle behind the dash.
Step 6: Installing the Switch to the Dash Using a Step Drill Bit (When You Don't Have a Square Rocker Switch)
1. Determine the desired location on the dash for installing the switch.
2. Use a step drill bit to create a properly sized hole on the dash. Start with a small hole and gradually increase the size until the switch can fit snugly. this switch was a 3/4 inch diameter.
3. Insert the switch into the hole and secure it using the mounting hardware provided with the switch or other appropriate means. This switch just snapped into place.

You can use mechanics wire inserted at the bottom of the drivers side roll cage opening. Put a loop on it and thread it up through your roll cage to where you mount your work lights. Tape your work lights wires to the loop on the mechanics wire and pull the wires down through the roll cage to the dashboard area. This will hide your wires and much easier than what you did.
