Newborn hearing screenings

What do babies miss if they are born with even a mild hearing loss? Experts say that hearing acuity directly affects the development of speech and verbal language skills-and may also negatively affect social, emotional, cognitive and academic development.
Diagnosis and early intervention are critical during that first year for the child with any degree of loss. All babies born in hospitals in Arizona are screened for hearing loss.
Watch as a hearing screening specialist from Banner Desert Medical Center, just next door to Cardon Children's Medical Center, performs this screening on a new baby, less than 24 hours old.

I managed several hospitals under the NBHSP here in CA. Built a solid foundation with a lot of audiologist, ENTS, and medical facilities. I left my position to pass the torch to another screener I managed so she can gain insurance benefits. I joined another contractor company doing the same, managing the hearing screening program as a area manager. It was bad, most of the screeners left because I held a higher standard. I cleaned up the staff, hired and retrained, cleaned up all the data work which included weekly, monthly and annual statistical data. I wasn’t making much it was purely because I loved my little patients. Two years into the job after cleaning up two hospitals and having everything run smoothly I get fired without notice. The company I worked for claimed I failed to turn in documents for another employee who was resigning, this was false because she was unsure and she was still scheduled for the next two months. As I packed my belongings everyone was shocked including doctors, nursing staff, birth certificates unit, NICU unit. I pulled over and cried as I gave everything to this company and to falsely accuse me of something I didn’t not do just to save money. I found out 3 days later my own screener took my position with half the salary.

No. I supervise a Newborn Hearing Screening program near Washington, DC. The reason that many parents are discouraged from watching is that if a baby doesn't pass, it can be very very upsetting and stressful. However, if a parent insists, I inform them about that and then let them observe.

For a video on hearing screenings it is beyond infuriating that the closed captioning is ridiculously inaccurate!

You just didn't see that part - it is standard to wash hands before and after handling the baby. It would take too long to show someone washing their hands.

Why do they insist that parents not view this procedure? never leave your newborn's side. i demanded to see this and had security sicked on me. Does that happen often?

i think its becuase of the results and how it can vary for instance. If the newborn failed the results some may become concerned very quickly also the room is supposed to be very silent so that the newborn is only hearing the clicks from the sweeps nothing else. the lady in this video honestly was not supposed to be speaking

They dont ask u here in Canada..they just come to the room..and take your baby..and do this mind control ..no consent, no chance for question..or time to decide if you want this for your child..and definitely did not let me go with them.. I am not blaming the nurses..they just do what they were told..or maybe they do know..this world is insane so i would not even be surprised

This job title is called a Newborn hearing screener. I worked as one for 2 years. I was not required to have a college degree for this position, only previous hospital experience or experience working with newborns. You undergo 1-3 months of training that will teach you everything you need to know as well as getting all the certifications you need to do this job. I loved it, very interesting field to be in and it is a great gateway into becoming an audiologist.
