Newcastle United & "The Project" | Where Are We?
In this in-depth episode of The Toon Review, we take a comprehensive look at the ambitious long-term project that has been unfolding at Newcastle United since the club’s takeover. After a whirlwind period of investment, key appointments, and squad changes, it’s time to assess where we are and what’s next.
We'll kick off by revisiting the original plan: What was the goal when the new ownership group, led by Amanda Staveley and backed by the Saudi PIF, took over? Are we still on track to achieve those ambitions?
Next, we dive into the major figures shaping the club's future. How have high-profile exits, such as CEO Darren Eales and Director Amanda Staveley, impacted the club's direction? We’ll analyse their roles, leadership styles, and the influence they had on the project.
Outgoings also play a crucial part. How have recent player sales and departures behind the scenes affected Newcastle’s momentum? We’ll explore how balancing Financial Fair Play regulations and squad development has influenced the club’s strategies.
What's still missing to truly push Newcastle into the Premier League elite? From squad depth and tactical adjustments to financial decisions, we'll cover the gaps that need addressing.
Finally, we'll discuss the next big moves on and off the pitch: whether it’s more big-name signings, stadium expansion, or strategic partnerships. What can Newcastle United do to ensure long-term success and become a consistent top-four contender?
Join us as we assess Newcastle United's exciting journey and debate what's needed to keep "The Project" on course!

Its evidently going as well as can be expected. Newcastle can only spend what their budget and PSR allows. So far they've signed some very good players. The board will be sitting on their hands somewhat whilst the premier league shoots itself in the foot from the Man city debacle. Steady increases in revenues over the next couple of years will see Newcastle become genuine top 4 contenders. Patience is required. All is looking fucking Darza. Unfortunately though, players will come and go. Bruno, Isak and Tonali will be sold at good profits and the squad will build and improve. Happy days

Phase 1 of the project was STABILITY. After the relegation struggles and near misses during Ashley resgim we have definitely accomplished stability so the project thus far has delivered. The work carrys on.

I honestly believe that despite our recent results and current first team issues we are still on track / slighy ahead of where we planned to be. The off-field developments since the ashley days have been HUGE. It may take the first team a little longer to catch up but I am still overall very positive about our future since the takeover.

Where will they put a 'huge complex'? They might conceivably turn the stadium a bit but the idea that they will let them concrete Leazes Park for a huge stadium plus shops etc I think won't happen. Also there is loads of empty retail units in the ciy. Also I really don't think there is the market for a stadium bigger than MUFC. They are the most successful team in the league who have a massive fan base, they are the only team since WW2 whose attendances haven't really fluctuated, maybe Liverpool as well. Just got to be realistic about how many will come.

The Reuben’s own plenty of land near the race course. I’d expect our future training ground etc will be there.

Funny how St Eddie has fell out with 2 sporting directors but they were the problem. There's the real possibility we could be bottom half by the next international break. Said it before and ill say it again Villa will be the more successful club in 5 years time.

41:13 we had at least 70m quid 😂. Cant say mo ones come in for mediocre players when we're giving them contract extensions after a 7 game purple patch or keeping players that can't manage to keep fit for more then 30% of a season.

Personally I’ll be upset if we lose at Ipswich Town. Don’t let them beat us Eddie. It makes me nervous because we lost at Luton Town around the same time last year.

Manager head to head stats don’t matter much. Howe leads Emery 2-1 (as Newcastle manager) but he is not a better manager. Klopp 12-11 Guardiola.

25m for Wood, 20m for Targett, 63m for Isak, 40m for Barnes Extensions for Karius/Dummet/Ritchie/Lascelles/Miggy. Mitchell was right all along about our overspending and the media were trying to create an imaginary rift, PSR restrictions meant we cant afford any mistakes in the market and we probably avoided one in the summer with 80m Guehi but the lack of alternatives is concerning.
@MrUtopianDellusions
@MrUtopianDellusions Күн бұрын
With respect, we did get 15 mill back for wood and Isak is easily worth double what we paid for him despite his uninspiring form at the moment. I would also argue Barnes was a reasonable price as well. Can't argue with Target, although I was keen on making him permanent after his loan spell. But overall, I don't think the transfers you have mentioned are indicative of overspending. Can't argue with you concerning most of the contract renewals.

@@MrUtopianDellusionsworth double what we paid ? Not after this season he won’t be having 1 good season doesn’t make you a 120 million pound player he’s been absolutely shocking so far if he keeps this up nobody will touch him with a barge pole.

So much to cover here. Firstly, I'm of the school that thinks what happened, happened and couldn't happen any other way. If we hadn't got to CL and had risen slowly, it would only have given the prem time for more dirty tricks and tightening psr. On Eales, his stunt at the stack only demonstrated cluelessness. I hate being sceptical for someone with his diagnosis, but he did do it to himself. Regardless, I still wish him well and hope he beats this. Thirdly, on the stadium, I'm not even sure we can move till 2028. We had our stadium put up for euros, it surely has some repercussions if we switch it out. Finally, on Eddie, I'm not a happy bunny with him atm, but I still wonder what he will do with a good transfer window. If we get the players he needs and still can't get wins, then the conversation about replacements can commence

We need a new formation playing the same way every game. It's actually really boring! Players are having to work too hard in games we don't keep the ball well enough! I don't see players developing at all! The Arsenal game is so important in my opinion but also the away games we need to be better

We are where i expect us to be giving the calibre of footballer we still have on the books I mean we're still starting games with Murphy and have players who are playing who were deemed not good enough 5 year ago. Till we are able to buy better footballers then we won't compete for honor's or CL footy again. I expect us to finish mid table but that's where we are at we have one for misfiring Striker? Unsustainable. The season is another nothingness and will continue to be till recruitment is improved and some sort of continuity is established, you lot predicting top 4 doesn't help setting deluded expectations
