I want to be clear I did not take this opportunity to condemn or defame another keeper. That would be an easy thing to do but there would be no point in that as I try to make another keeper look bad. It seems many people in our industry are quick to deface other keepers and enjoy making them look bad! I do not want to bring attention or get views by taking another keeper that may have great intentions and making them look terrible, hope this makes sense! - *Kevin McCurley*

It makes perfect sense. I post videos and talk about my snakes at work and I have had many quickly bring this video up. So is important to bring up the snake is not an evil man eating animal it was just a simple mistake that hopefully she and everyone that seen the video and do the same learn from. Who better to educate on this mistakes than you brother. Thank you for everything you do for our hobbie. Love your book!

I've taken 2 feed mode bites from both my female retics..they both got over excited at the smell of food in front of them and missed. Luckily both my girls realised in both incidences that i wasnt food and released straight away. Kudos to that lady for keeping her cool cuz panicking is the worst thing you can do when you get bit by a snake because it excites them more.

I hope that the snakes don't get a bad reputation for being a snake. The snake knew it was time to eat. This lady should have known the moment she opened this tank not to use her hand. She should have had her food ready on her tongs. So she could of been able to keep a safe distance and all of this could have been avoided. But aman for her remaining calm.. But i bet next time she won't make these same mistakes. Live and learn. Im glad no one was badly hurt this could have been soooo much worse.

I think she has 20 followers and was trying to make a youtube video to grow her channel. She maybe let it go a few days longer than normal to make sure it wouldn't get camera shy when they tried to make a video. She was probably thinking more about how she was looking on camera then at the snake hence her trying to pet it and be affection it while it was clearly loooking for food. She also clearly didn't have help from anyone who knew anything about snakes so she is trying to instruct while being eaten and kept her cool the entire time. My best guess is she knows what she was doing but was far more nervous about the camera and how she was going to come off in the video to really figure out what was going on until it was way too late. I refuse to believe someone so clueless they don't know what a hungry snake looks like would stay that calm with a 10-12 foot snake biting, constricting, and drawing blood. Not a good video. Definitely should have never been posted in my opinion which means nothing cause i am just a dork on youtube. Either way great video NERD.

@@jacoboneal139 More handling makes the snake easy going and calm, but with larger snakes like him, you have to watch for signals like lots of tongue flicks, interest, and excitement. It all differs from the snake's temperament. After you let the snake know you're not food or feeding it, it will get out of food mode I you know what I mean. Also you should have 2+ people when you are feeding or handling him for accidents (snakes aren't the smartest)

I appreciate your review of the video. My concern is that the original video could be used by groups like PETA and USHS as propaganda for bills against owning constrictors. I think that USARK would have a harder arguing the facts compared to the visual of the woman struggling and the blood dripping on the floor.

I'm really impressed with Kevin's analysis of the video. It's so easy to go on the attack and pick apart everything little thing she did wrong (I was guilty of it myself the first time I watched it), but Kevin's first instinct is to compliment her up and down on everything she did right. I'm glad there's people like him representing us as a reptile loving community.

I agree with you completely. I hate that we are killing wildlife faster than it can reproduce and there are so many people who could care less but a world without all these beautiful and unique animals would be boring. People say the same thing about zoo's but most zoos are dedicated to repopulating endangered species. The thought of my grandchildren or great-grandchildren seeing or knowing of an animal is in a book or zoo is truly terrifying. Always love your take on things because you have such a level head. stay safe

Just now seeing this specific reaction, great way to make this a learning tool Kevin! One thing I started doing after I took my first bite from a 16 ft female was to brief everyone on what to do in case of a bite before letting them handle my snakes for the first time. I think often we forget that not only should we have 2 people there but those people need to know what to do ahead of time, she showed how difficult it can be to deal with a bite and teach someone how to manage it at the same time. Thanks for putting this out!

I was volunteering at this one place that gives food to the community and another volunteer showed me this video and he said and I quote "This video reminds me of you because you love snakes." I watched the video and explained every bit the keeper did wrong, what they should have done and basic things like that and his face was shocked and even said himself "She made a big mistake then." I mean I don't own a boa but I have a ball python and have learned what to look for to avoid any bites if possible. That retic obviously was in food mode.

I am a reptile guy and I have snakes, geckos, monitors and I have been keeping them for most of my life. Everyone at my work knows I have reptiles and I have even brought a few into work to show off. One of those coworkers showed me the video (posted on Facebook) of the "mean snake that attacks it's owner"... As soon as I seen the Retic come out of its cage, I knew right away it was a feed response. I explained much of what Kevin said in the video to that coworker. That the snake thought she was food and the owner didn't see that the snake was in feed mode. It also looked like the snake may have been in shed. Good call on the rodent cages in the back ground. In the video I watched, it was cropped and I didn't see them.

Hey Kevin , First I want to say that , is , the baddest mo fo theme song on KZbin , never change it . I think everything you said was on point . The rodents in the same room , the snake being in food mode , and the fact that she is totally unaware of its intentions , but , we can , if we aren't careful , fall into a false sense of security . Trying not to be too harsh , the guy that is with her really needs to rethink his approach in the future and be ready to take better charge of the situation . I once adopted a red tail boa from a friend when I was in my early 30's . Of course when I took her she was she was 10 inches and I had no idea what I was getting myself into . After adding several more feet to her over the course of about 5 or 6 years , I had to rehome her . After much reflection , I wanted to write a book called " So You Want To Own a Red Tail Boa " . These snakes are not for everyone , and the public need to see this before they buy one and know that there is a lot to learn and if they don't , this can happen . It doesn't mean you can never own a python , but maybe a Ball or Spotted is a better choice than a Burmese . Be well

Snake was an owner surrender to this women's pet shop. Who knows what its circumstances had been or if this had happened before. It was hungry and not in great shape (retained sheds and a little under weight). She should have been more cautious and should have sensed the feeding response, but she may not have realized this was a possibility as this particular snake is like the lion of pythons. This snake needs some good, consistent feeding and proper environment.

Great commentary! Of course we've seen this on the different reptile groups and everyone is quick to shred this lady for making a mistake...I appreciate your ability to put this in the most positive tone possible...we need MORE of that. I'm certain that she has heard a ton of advice not as well intentioned as yours. I would venture a guess she has since become quite religiously skilled with hook training...our best teacher is our own mistakes. :-) Hell, I was hit by my 10 ft female retic and my nile monitor last week...both feeding responses and my fault...live and learn.
