Except Taylor Swift songs. or so they say. They claim that they have tried several times but they never like the results so they don't sing them. I suspect their arrangements are excellent but Scott and Mitch are so starstruck by Taylor that they don't believe the results are good enough. I think what sets Pentatonix way apart from the other a capella groups is their amazing original music. They go from something like this to Run to You or Sing, and blow your mind with their versatility and ability to be vocal chameleons. Creativity off the charts. They’re a well-oiled machine that can surprise you over and over again with their interpretations of covers AND put out banging original music. Love that about them.

When Scott isn't singing lead or filling in as bass while Avi or Matt takes the lead, he still has one of the most difficult roles in an a cappella group. He has to fill in the sound, so to speak, to help PTX create their signature "wall of sound". If you're not able to pick out his voice too well in the overall mix, then he is doing his job. Mitch and Kirstin also do that on occasion but Scott's overall vocal range makes him ideally suited to this role.

This is such an awesome reaction! If you are ever interested in some more intense bass, check out both Home Free and Voiceplay. Home Free actually did a cover of "Ring of Fire" with Avi, and their bass is insane. Voiceplay's bass, Geoff has his own channel, and his voice gives me chills every time. They did a cover of "Oogie Boogie Song" with Geoff as the lead, and oh gosh. The range!

I'm glad I read through the comments because this is exactly what I was going to say! That first big drop, at about 4:00, is followed by Newfie saying that with Mitch building it up so high, you know they're going to do a drop, either Avi with the bass or Kevin with the beatbox. And then he attributes it to Kevin. Lots of people make that mistake with this song, usually because they don't realize that Kevin's a high tenor when he sings. But that drop was definitely the two of them working together, as they did so very well.

Perhaps a link to an interview where PTX said that, or Kevin discussed his use of throat bass, or a video where Kevin is using throat bass and Avi can clearly be seen/heard doing something else at the same time? All I've ever heard or read about this song to date is that it was Avi and Kevin together on the drop.

@@janetranslates He can get pretty low with throat bass but doesn't do it much anymore because it hurts. Even the video itself suggests it's mainly Kevin as they usually are great at showcasing who is doing what at the time.

@@FayolaOnline They do show Kevin first, but at the third measure they show Kevin and Avi, and Avi is bobbing is head to to the beat and moving his lips. Scott and Kirstin are shown dancing but don't seem to be vocalizing at all. Just Avi and Kevin. The same rhythm continues while the trio sings--no sign of Avi doing anything else. I know, that's not a definitive argument, but neither is the argument you draw from the video. On the other hand, I'm very interested in the two links your provided. When I get off work I'll definitely watch them, and get back to you. If he really is doing that, I can well imagine that it hurts his throat!

Really enjoying your PTX reactions, and I can't believe you haven't checked out Home Free yet! They won the Sing Off the year after PTX, but they have been around much longer (started out here in MN by brothers Adam (the human drum kit) & Chris Rupp), one of the only country aca groups that I know of, and they have a ton of fun but are equally impressive in their own way. They are also pals with PTX. If you think Avi is impressive, just wait til you meet his mentor Tim Foust! A great starting point is their Ring of Fire video, which also features Avi. Another one is Country Fried Pop Medley, which has a bit of a similar style to many of PTX's early medley videos, and also the Butt's Remix to see their hilarious side. Many Pentaholics are also Home Fries! =)
