I have such a soft spot for Octopus. It's such a nice episode for parents who are not naturally good at imaginative play in the way that Bandit and Chilli are, but find their own way to have play time with their kids ❤

Absolutely. It almost feels like a direct response to all the 'Bandit is a totally unrealistic expectation for a fun dad' comments they had from S1.

It can also be gentle representation of parents on the autism spectrum, specifically ones who take direction bit literally and cant quite connect with nonsense elements of kids imaginative play. Chloe's dad bridges this gap with research to tie the play to factual info he can better process.

Yeah, Octopus is one of those 'I feel seen' episodes, because my brain gets like that. It gets stuck in 'That shouldn't be possible' mode and it is SO HARD to get it to shut up. The 'THIS octopus does' method helps SO MUCH to help me relax and go with the flow, and I'm totally the type that would go and research more.

Weirdly I have a soft spot for this episode because Chloe/her dad feel like they're coded autistic. Just my little headcanon, but as someone who is majorly obsessed with aquatic life, I also tend to accidentally fall into sort of "fact-checking" things that don't necessarily require it.

In Helicopter Bluey started off the game wanting to be completely in charge and making all the decisions. She felt things were out of her control when her playdate was cancelled, so for her game she needed to be in complete control. Over the course of the game her friends kept asking her to do things differently than how she wanted (let someone pick a different location, let someone else fly, let the helicopter be damaged, let it be a plane instead of a helicopter), and she gradually relinquished more and more control of the game. So by the end, when it rolled back around to the cancelled playdate, she felt more okay with things going differently from how she wanted. It wasn't as deliberate on her part as when she recreated taking the budgie to the vet in Copycat; it was more circumstances that just happened be what she needed to process how she was feeling that day.
@liamwhite3522
@liamwhite3522 Ай бұрын
And every step of the way where she relinquished control, it was still fun, still alright.

I’m a childless grown woman…but when Coco’s mum looks into the camera and says: “You’re doing great”…I hear that, I feel that, I think that maybe I’m not doing so bad in my life as I’d thought after all. Parent or not, that little 4th wall break makes everyone who watches feel seen. That’s what makes Baby Race another GOAT episode.

@josephblasky3237 Ай бұрын
Specifically it was almost scrapped because it contradicted the previously established lore of "babies are like real dogs" (ala Socks). When it was pointed they'd forgotten that, your mentioned exchange happened, and the rest is history.
@Cure_Hana
@Cure_Hana Ай бұрын
It’s a little weird, though, since even before meeting Socks, we already saw a few examples of baby dogs getting pushed around in strollers. My personal headcanon is that Socks was born with a recessive gene which caused her behavior to be more feral, but she could still be trained out of as she got older.
@Zanoab
@Zanoab Ай бұрын
My theory is their babies can temporarily regress and prefer moving around on four legs because it is easier. At some point, Socks will need to transition back to two legs so the two arms can be used for other purposes while moving.

I’ve commented on exactly 1 video in my life. Here’s number 2. Jay: Neurodiverse parent of an autistic college student here. My son spoke “late” according to the growth and development charts, and received speech therapy for nearly a decade. He got there in his own damn time, just like he’s done everything else since. I wasted so much time worrying-time that could have been spent enjoying him for the amazing person he was and is. F*ck the development charts. F*ck the timelines. Your boy doesn’t need to match the charts to be amazing. He already is.

I just commented about my autistic son. My son started speaking on schedule, but once he got those first five or so words he basically didn't add to them for a year. I've learned to embrace being on his schedule and no one else's.
@Michelle-DiPalo
@Michelle-DiPalo Ай бұрын
My son said like 2 or 3 words on time, then just stopped. We were surprised because he rolled over, crawled and walked "on time." We even delayed potty training and even shoe tieing, because we thought if he could speak, he couldn't understand that much either (definitely over thought that part). Either way, with speech therapy, he was speaking fully by 4 and graduated out of therapy by middle of 1st grade. They mostly kelt him in for pronunciation and articulation. Now we can't get him to stop talking. He does have ADHD and some OCD tendencies along with sensory issues, but he's so bright. He's currently 9, in 4th grade, but his teacher has actually been giving him 5th grade math assignments because she finds him flying by thw 4th grade lessons. Sorry to high jack the comment, just agreeing that all kids do things when they are supposed to for them and it doesn't mean anyone did anything wrong. They're all still precious and loved, which is all that matters.

Hey! My boy (age 4) is behind in his speech, recently dx with autism and recently made sentences with his speech tablet. His speech delay was also impacted by his inability to hear due to excessive fluid buildup in the ears. He never had any fevers but did have a lot of earwax buildup and hated his head being touched so it was always hard for ear checkups. He had tubes out in and is tolerating sounds really well. We are so excited to understand him better 🎉 He's been doing some form of speech therapy for over a year but we've switched to ABA therapy. He loves to learn, is crazy active, but struggles with consonant sounds. We're all out here doing our best with the information we have - Mama Dr. Jones

That "You're doing great" straight to the camera, to me, was recognition I didn't know I needed. It seems like I found Bluey when I felt like I was doing everything wrong, that I was failing, everyone was doing what I couldn't. This episode, Baby Race, gave me the perspective I needed to relax and enjoy the short time my kiddos were little. As a new parent, I struggled so much more than I had anticipated, but this made me realize I wasn't alone. And I will forever cry when it comes on!

Baby Race gets me in a big way. My son is autistic, so there were a lot of milestones he didn't reach as a toddler. He's nine now and still sometimes mentions when he couldn't talk. His doctor refused to entertain the idea that he was autistic and spent over a year telling me all the things I needed to do to encourage him to talk before I got him diagnosed. I eventually learned that my kiddo does meet the milestones, just at his own pace that I have absolutely no control over. I have people tell me now that I'm doing a great job with him, but I really needed to hear that seven years ago.

@@baconatorrodriguez4651 It's more to do with a collective experience - So many of us parents went through what Jay went through this episode, and for some parents it's a reminder that they're not a one-off and that there are others out there gong through the same experiences of parenthood as they are. Those seeking tears weren't doing it out of malice but more "Hey bud, we know what you're going through, we all felt the same way and the tears poured out the same way. When Jay cried at the end of Baby Race, I was crying right along with him. But when Adam was mouthing "Not sports people" behind him, I died laughing! This was a fantastic reaction to a great bunch of episodes. When in the first episode Nana says nanas aren't good at relaxing, I immediately think of my mom - she's the worst at relaxing so that tugs on my heartstrings. Both Octopus and Baby Race have some many important life lessons for parents. I know this is supposed to be a kids show but deep down I think it's a show for grown ups, sometimes especially parents, that kids will also love and enjoy. Every time I watch an episode, I'm impressed anew. Also, I can't wait for that duck cake - I love that you believe in yourself Adam. Hooray!

Jay, my son was the same way. He was so physically adept from a very young age- walking, running, climbing, even doing puzzles and writing- but was slow to talk. We had to do speech therapy, and even then he only progressed some before hitting another plateau. Ironically enough, it wasn’t until we started watching Bluey regularly that he really started to talk! This show means so much to me for so many reasons, this being a prime one. My daughter, on the other hand, does nothing but sing all day 😊 she’s barely 2 and has started saying short sentences!
@Albinerhawk
@Albinerhawk Ай бұрын
This is exactly our older two were. First one slower to talk, second one picked it up much faster. I think I heard somewhere that the problem with only or oldest children is that they are primarily surrounded by adults who talk at an advanced level unless they intentionally baby talk which they don't do 24/7. Younger siblings benefit from being able to observe simpler speech patterns from their older siblings. She had two big jumps in speech development. One is when we lifted our ban on screentime for her and she started watching Daniel Tiger. Second she started preschool at 3. Now she's 9 and in the gifted learning program at her school. She is very talkative and social with a huge vocabulary. Sometimes a delayed start has no bearing later in life.

I resonate with Chili so much, wanting your child to meet the same milestones as other children and feeling inadequate as a mother. Both my boys had "delayed speech". Both of them caught up within 6 months of being in preschool. They are both very bright and doing great in school now. Run your own race, but know that worrying is normal for parents that care. The same pediatrician that told me "preschool is cheap speech therapy" also told me "The fact that you are so worried about parenting wrong says you are probably doing plenty right. Because you care ao much".

I've been waiting to see Jay react to this episode since episode 1. This episode hit me like an 18-wheeler and still makes me sob every single time. I cried watching Jay watch it. My daughter is almost 2 now, and still her only consistent word is "Mama" and she doesn't use it with intent. She's always been very smart and would blow us away, figuring out stuff super quick like wooden puzzles and shape sorters and those "twist, flip, press, switch" pop-up toys. But she just wouldn't even try to speak, communicate at all really. She also had lots of ear infections, so our pediatrician ended up recommending getting tubes in her ears and said that would help. The surgery helped with her ear infections and helped her sleep better. But still no improvement with speech. To the point where the pediatrician was concerned and referred us to speech therapy. Speech therapy not only didn't help, but the therapist was concerned about some of her behaviors. So, they referred us to early intervention. After a few appointments with them, they told us they can't technically diagnose at this age but they are fairly certain our daughter is Autistic... We've tried so hard to provide the most nourishing environment we can. We read books and medical studies, we didn't give her any screen time, we read to her constantly, did tons of singalong learning songs, first word flashcards, outdoor play, sign language.. And then to watch her at daycare and playdates be so behind the other kids and struggle to communicate and play with others. Made us feel like failures as parents, the guilt was overwhelming. We still struggle with it even though we know it's not our fault and nothing is "wrong" with our daughter she's perfect. Even if you've heard it before, even if you know it, for every parent out there, sometimes you just need to hear "you're doing great"... 💙

I don't remember what exactly Jay said or which part he said it in but he said something along the lines of "Sometimes this show just looks at you and tells you your doing ok" and ever since I've been waiting for baby race for the show to do just that

I love Adam’s snarky comments and aloofness, it reminds me of comments I used to make before becoming a parent. lol!! 😂 But that ending at baby race; oh my gosh. Haha tears and tears all day. My mom and I showed that episode to my sister, and she sniffled (trying so hard not to cry) and muttered; “stupid cartoon” 😂😂😂 hardly anyone is immune to the gut wrenching feels the second you hear those sweet words of innocence from Bingo that mean so much; “maybe you just saw something you wanted.”

The Octopus episode joke of "yay more rules" for bluey sorta adds to the lore of Bluey having Adhd or being generally neurodivergent. We do like rules and setting in place boundaries to make the world we're playing in make sense

Judo’s mom actually has several nice moments in season 3, and so does Judo. We also get to know Lucky’s family much more closely and I’m excited to watch you guys react to Pass the Parcel, I feel like Adam will relate to Pat 😂 and we get to know Rusty’s family in my very favorite episode but that’s almost at the end of the season. It’s really fun to get to know the more tertiary characters better.

Yay! Pass the Parcel! What I also love about favourite Bluey episodes is that they are all awesome for different reasons. That creative team amazingly doesn’t repeat their successful ideas and manages to keep the show pretty fresh.

@ I totally agree, and when they include different families they can explore different kinds of conflicts that might not come up in the Heeler house as much. Like frequent absence of a parent the way Rusty has, or different values on certain things, like Pat and Wendy have. I also like the reflection of Stripe and Trixie as slightly less developed in their parenting and much more stressed out due to the younger ages of their kids and… well… Muffin is a challenging personality also lol. It’s nice to see all of these very different personalities get challenged and resolve the issues that come up for them that might never be shown with Bandit or Chilli.

My kid is almost the same age as yours. Jay and he struggled with talking for a few months. Someone told me that is more difficult for boys than for girls. They also told me to talk to him with big words and a normal voice (not the baby voice) and it helped a lot. You're doing an amazing job, don't worry ❤

Chloe and her dad were like me and my dad. He and I both have autism, and we are both nerds, so we sometimes need specific instructions and things to be very logical. So when I was little I would play with him and we’d get in arguments about how to do it. One day we found out how to yes and and it changed the way little me and him would play together 😭💗

Jay, as a parent of a 9 year old who had hit all milestones slightly slower than average, and a 3 yr old who still refuses to really talk, I just wanted to say, I see you. But this episode as well as talking to other parents has me in better spirits knowing that it will come, in time. Best you can do is be supportive, and always can look into speech therapy to help the process. Never be afraid to ask for help.

In "Helicopter" the connection between the play and real life was that there was something Bluey wanted to do (to play with Honey vs wanting to use her Helicopter) and people changing the thing she wanted (having to do Bingo's thing vs Rusty wanted the Helicopter to go down, not enough space for the kangaroos etc) at the end of the play and real life Bluey accepts that sometimes the thing she wants needs to be changed sometimes

Jay - i relate to your reaction to Baby Race so much! I remember always being so worried when my kiddo was in those "firsts" stage and feeling the need to compare against other parents and kids. But the best advice I got from other parents is that kids will develop at their pace. My kid was quiet too and took a while to talk and potty train but he got there. Also I learned that my kid was quiet mostly because he enjoyed observing first before interacting in new situations. You're doing great and your baby knows he is loved and feels safe which is the most important thing he could have for his development. One day (sooner than you realize) your son will be talking so much that you'll look back to these days when you were worried and wonder why you were so desperate to get him talking so quickly (haha just kidding). Don't listen to the voices of doubt in your head saying you need to do more. Listen to other parents when we/they tell you that you and Kimberly are doing an amazing job raising your son and what you're doing is exactly what your kiddo needs.

To Jay: As a father to a little boy myself, I too was concerned that he wasn’t talking when I thought he should be. So much so that I had him tested for autism and even took him to speech therapy. I learned that boys statistically begin to speak much later than girls, and a lot of it also boils down to they’ll talk when they have something to say. Just know that it’s not you, you’re doing great and just enjoy the quiet while you can, cause when he starts talking, if he’s anything like my son, he won’t stop.

I'll let you know about the little pies Stripe is serving. We cann them "Party Pies." They are much smaller then a usual hand pie, about the size of the palm of an adult's hand and are always "meat" a mixture of ground beef and gravy to make a gooey liquid of dubious province. Kids eat them at parties along with treats like Piklets (tiny pancakes served with jam and whipped cream) Fairy Bread (White buttered bread dipped in sprinkles) and Sausage Rolls (a sausage wrapped in pastry)

Hi Jay! I don't know if this is helpful or not but...my cousin's first son didn't really speak until around three years old. The doctor kept assuring them that he was fine (and like yours he was ahead of things physically) and not to worry. And he was right! Once he was ready to speak, he didn't just say words, he pretty much spoke whole sentences! Also, it's harder for a first born (I am the first of four in my family), as we don't have an older sibling to copy and chase after. We have to figure things out on our own. Your boy is doing great and so are you and your wife! It's all good! 😊🥰

Hey, buddy. Our second son (of four boys) has Trisomy 21. He is a wonderful, beautiful, awesome, hilarious little guy -- and the developmental milestones for 'typical' kids simply do not apply. The joy of bring his Dad, despite his struggles, is worth it all, even with the worries and tears that come with it. It really is not a race. Your little guy will be just fine. And you're doing great, fellow Dad, you're doing great.

To Jay: My oldest started walking at 8 months, but because she was so early, we think it delayed her speech a little bit since she was so focused on the physical stuff. Then one day, it just clicked and her language just exploded. He'll get there. You don't need to worry about it until your pediatrician tells you to worry about it.
