This is amazing! It is bringing me back to the night this was recorded. Ty called me up after I'd gone home for the day saying I had to come back in, "something big" had come up. it was an hour drive back to Queens, so I was unenthused, but I did it because Ty was my boss and he seemed really, really excited. Once I got there we loaded into his CLK and drove to a studio in Manhattan. It was maybe 9pm. "We're doing a track for Big Pun!" he told me. So we got set up with what I think was a Korg Triton in the studio. I was asked what I needed - something nobody had ever asked me before, as this was my first time doing studio musician work - and I said I wanted them to tape the sustain pedal to the floor so it wouldn't slide. Then Ty put together the basic drums on his SP-1200 and I started jamming out on the piano part. Clearly it is derivative of "Still Not A Player" but whatever, it worked! Then Ty told me to do something similar using a marimba sound for the verses, so I did. That took all of maybe 45 minutes. Then the girl group, 6430, was brought in. The original idea - to do a variation of "Who Do You Love" - ended up being the final idea after an unsuccessful attempt to come up with another idea that wouldn't require royalty sharing. After they laid down their vocals it was a long, long wait for Pun. Hours. "Pun is on his way!" "Pun stopped for pizza!" "Pun is visiting a friend!" Eventually nature called, so I went to the restroom, and when I entered there was this guy, a really, really huge guy, standing in front of two sinks at once. "This," I thought to myself, "must be Big Pun." I did what I needed to do and, because I didn't think bothering a deep-in-thought Pun was a great idea, left without washing my hands. I got back to the control room and told everyone that Pun was in the building. Shortly after that he entered and went into the vocal booth to record. It is still surreal that I got to be there in the studio while he laid down a track. After it was done we all stood for a photo - a photo which I still don't have a copy of and is on my bucket list to acquire. Ty and walked back in his car just as the sun was coming up and drove back to the studio in Queens, where I got back in my car and drove back to my house on Long Island, then immediately called my best friend from college - who got me into hip-hop - to tell him what happened. All in all an epic night!
