Fantastic. Had an old air cooled VW Westy years ago and loved the concept - not the drivetrain. The Vanagon and Eurovan's seem like evolutionary improvements on a light weight weekender type of vehicle. Chris seems like a really knowledgeable nice guy. Thanks for a great interview!

One of the most informative videos I have seen for a prospective buyer. I think I have now figured out that this model is the one I'll be looking for. Now to just find the right one! Safe travels from California!

We love our 2003 weekender! Added an ARB Fridge (bolted to the floor) behind driver's seat, kitchen/storage box behind passenger's seat and solar/battery/shorepower ... and a little caframo fan for our back seat passenger.

We had one for 20 years. Loved it. Sold it five years ago because VW ended ALL support including vital drivetrain parts. Best choice now is to get a Pleasureway Tofino--same concept, similar layout, only 8 inches longer, based on Ram Promaster 1500. there are also scads of Promaster high roof camper conversions from mom & pop shops if youi don't mind a lower level of systems integration and want to save money.

Euro parts as well as bus depot still stock many parts for these. For example it's pretty easy to get CV joints/axles. Many shops will still repair the transmissions. You can get suspension parts and brakes, wheel bearings, etc. I would say the bigger difference here in 2024 is you really need to pay attention to your maintenance schedules, and do the work AHEAD of time. This is not a vehicle you want to just head out in without doing necessary maintenance, as you could end up stranded for a week or something waiting on parts. Of course I could say the same thing about a Mercedes sprinter van from the same era. And don't forget that the very popular Rialta was also built on this same chassis. The real Achilles heel was the transmission and you pretty much need to add a transmission cooler and keep an eye on the temperature via a scan gage. You may be able to get by doing 70 or 80 miles an hour in these lighter weight vans, but you certainly would not want to do that in the 7000 pound Rialta. All of the problems are essentially amplified. . Pop top Heaven in Southern California is still going strong restoring both these and the Rialtas. They appear to be booked solid as of June 24.

@@NewJerseyOutdoorAdventures I am looking at a 95. They guy said the following “366K on the body. The rebuild was done by the brother (a mechanic) of the previous owner. I have the receipts which totalled $11,500. It was done in 2019 at about 349K. So the engine has less than 20K on it. What say you? Asking 25k CAD.

I'm not into those pop-tops or tent-trailers unless one is in a very dry climate. It takes a lot of care to make sure mold doesn't start. Otherwise, good job. Good tip about fridge depth, Patrick.

I have the 2002 EVC which is identical to the 2003. On average, it will do about 17~18 mpg in mixed driving and 20 mpg on the highway. The 24 valve VR6 is an excellent engine with plenty of passing power - even uphill! I bought it new in 2002 and I still can't find anything that can quite replace it. It is indeed the Swiss Army Knife of cars; everyday driver, camper, people mover and cargo van all in one.

It does have cruise control but no tilt steering. Was wondering if that could be changed. I have test driven a few. Very quick and fast. VW could have put a sliding door on the driver's side. That might have helped the sales.
@NewJerseyOutdoorAdventures4 жыл бұрын
It had so much potential
@GhostWaveBook4 жыл бұрын
It might be possible, but I don't think you could add tilt easily at all. The 2001 to 2003's are indeed very fast.
