No it isn't, everything he made was completely useless and there are better products out that do the same thing. Take for example the match striking machine. Whoopy doo it lit a bunch of matches but what's more convenient. Having the striker strip on the side of the matchbox or having to carry this dumb ass device to strike them which will likely fall apart in your pocket because hot glue while great in static applications doesn't hold very tight in your pocket.

For a couple cents you can get a 5v USB power module (charging module) that will work perfectly fine with 9v in 5v out. You just hook the battery plug right up to it. It's far simpler, requires much fewer parts, is easier, is more efficient and is much less likely to damage the device you're powering/charging. It would also have a true DC power source, which this one doesn't because of the nature of producing electricity directly from a generator/motor (without a rectifier). I don't know that last statement to be an absolute fact, but I'd bet that hooking it up an oscilloscope would show that it's more like an AC power source than a DC power source (which could damage any devices you power with it or more likely could damage the batteries of any device you power with it). Hope you forgive the rant. It looks like a fun project to build, but I just hope people don't copy it and then damage their phone or tablet they paid $100's for (or any other device).

I don't understand the purpose of the first invention. Couldn't you have directly connected the 9v battery to the 5v dc-dc boost connector and then charge it?

Yes, first device totally useles.... But boost coverter and 9 volts sounds danger for smartphone. In this case, i I will try disasembly 9 volts battery usaly it consist from litle cells, and use its separetly
