Quick run of the Detroit 4-53T with its newly installed Jake Brake units before I reinstalled the valve cover. Mainly checking for oil leaks and that all clearances remained after the engine is shut down. The red (hi-temp) wire is used to energize the solenoid to allow oil to fill the Jake galleries, thus putting the Jake units into operation. Actual Jake operation was tested after the engine was buttoned up. The 'saddle' that is seen being pushed down on the injector rocker picks up the injector motion and hydraulically transfers that motion to the adjoining slave piston that pushes down on its exhaust rocker opening the corresponding valves. Oil pressure normally brings the 'saddle' down only during Jake operation.

That thing runs like a top, sounds good, and is just so cool in general especially with the Jake Brakes.

That's actually something that I was hoping to do, but she really throws the oil around when revved , even slightly! There's always the possibility of pulling the valve cover again for whatever reason, and I would make another attempt of filming it then. I want to see it, too! ;-)

Did you replace the rubber seal rings where the oil supply connects the master to drones? If so where did you find them new. Mine are probably 50 years old or more.

Hey Peyton, yeah, everything replaceable is new. I'll have to go thru my notes to see who I dealt with for the seals. Seems to me Cummins ended up being the source for them thru the parts dealer I used back in Florida. I'll check tomorrow.

@@peytonmaterne2970 Sorry for the late reply, the weather has been nuts around here (Northern Calif) lately, power outages, flooding, etc!! Anyway, I found the receipt for the seals. The company is Diesel Specialists, LLC, 8784 S. Choctaw Dr., Baton Rouge, LA 70815. (225) 928-1913 The part no. is 3871682. The receipt didn't specifically call out the seals as used with Jakes, so you probably should verify the part over the phone. I ordered these back in mid 2016, so I'm assuming the company is still around. Hope this gets what you need! -Steve

WHERE CAN i GET A SET OF 4-53 JAKE BRAKES
@enginenut5
@enginenut5 4 жыл бұрын
This is the question I myself asked several years ago. As stated below for another viewer, most all the Jake Model 53A components made their way onto 6V53's for truck use, though the 53A's do also fit the 4-53's. Unfortunately, the 53A sets of any kind are VERY scarce!! It took me over 4 years to find my set (which came off a 6V53) and I paid half again more for them than I did the engine itself! My set came up on Ebay a few years ago. All I can say is research and monitor used truck engine sources. They ARE out there, but definitely hen's teeth!! Good luck in your search!

Is that one master and three slaves? Where did you find a set for 53 series?
@enginenut5
@enginenut5 7 жыл бұрын
Yep! Being just the 4 banger, I didn't really think it was necessary to split 'em up in two groups of two for hi/lo braking. Putting the master in the #2 (or #3) position made it a lot easier to plumb the oil supply. This set with all the 'fixin's' came from a sale on Ebay.

@@enginenut5 Hi there I am about to purchase some jake brakes for my 471 and from watching your video and reading the above comment from Kevin I now understand about the master selenoid and three slaves all joined together. What I dont understand though is where are they all getting their oil feed from does it get fed into that 90 degree elbow/ fitting on the master unit? And that single wire is that an earth wire or is that the power wire that activates the selenoid? And once the oil has been pumped through the retarder does it just exit out inside the tappet cover area? Sorry for the long-winded question but there is not a lot of info out there about installing jakes! 🤔
@enginenut5
@enginenut5 4 жыл бұрын
@@38score17 Hi George - Yes, you are correct that the oil is supplied to the Jakes via the 90 degree A/N fitting seen on the master. After this video was shot, I finished fabrication of the required spacer between the head and valve cover, and it is through that spacer, that the Jakes get their oil supply. The oil can come from anywhere off the main engine oil gallery, in my case, I grabbed it at the fitting on the block that feeds the bearing for the blower drive and fed it up to the Jakes via a stainless steel oil hose. The wire you see is the activation wire that is fed into the valve train through an insulated sealed conductor threaded into the back of the head. That wire is controlled through the dash switch, the buffer switch on the governor, and a clutch switch. During/after operation, some oil is passed by the master and slave pistons in the Jake units, but most remaining oil pressure in the system is blown off by the deactivated solenoid valve, all the oil being returned to the engine via the normal overhead returns. There's a definite learning curve with these with lots of little discoveries along the way!

Are they engaged all at once or is there anyone turning them on in stages? It's hard for me to get my hand on one of those heads but i believe it's not that hard for me to design a and have CNC machine a set of those, i would use Fiat multi air solenoids
@enginenut5
@enginenut5 4 жыл бұрын
In this particular case, I have all 4 on one stage. Just didn't see the practicality of having two banks of two Jakes. Could have, though, since when buying this Jake set, these came off a 6V53 which gave me 4 slaves and 2 masters giving me a spare of both slave and master. If you came up with a working replacement for the 53 Series Jakes, I suspect you'd have yourself a lot of customers! These things are definite 'hens teeth'!

4-53t's OHC or OHV?
@enginenut5
@enginenut5 7 жыл бұрын
OHV. This head arrangement is a little different from normal engines, in that all the valve train, from the roller cam followers all the way to the valves, are physically contained in the head, while only the cam itself is in the block. Setting the head on the block aligns the followers up with the cam. Plus, depending on which side you want the exhaust to be on, the head can be mounted either way and the cam & balance shafts can be simply swapped.

Yep! Jakes have been sitting on the bench for over a year, but had too many other irons in the fire to get them installed. Finally got 'em in, but need to do a little TLC on the rear brakes before taking it out for a run. A car show is planned at the Sheriffs Posse Grounds in Jamestown April 1 by the Vietnam Vets of America and this is scheduled to be there.
