So you raise an interesting philosophical question. The fact that these speakers got you to put aside your analytical self and just enjoy the music, is that not the greater point? Would that not make these speakers what all speakers should aspire to? At the end of the day, music is art, it's emotion. Music isn't science. Not to say that science isn't inadvertently involved in the recording or reproduction of music, but any product that gets you to forget all that, isn't that better? Good to see you back!

Hey Andrew, Its a valid point and worth exploring! You are right, when the analytical side of me is bypassed by smiles and i'm just enjoying the music - thats something worth celebrating all day long. Appreciate the comment and thanks for stopping by!

@@Newrecordday2013 I only raise the question (or I guess rephrase your realization as a question) because as an artist myself (filmmaker) I don't want people asking me about my gear, I want them enthralled in the story. I can only imagine musicians are the same way. I feel that if you have time to step away from the lyrics or musical passage enough to go, "hey, this DAC is too analytical" then the whole darn thing is wrong. I mean the music could suck and not capture your attention in which case it could float to something else I suppose, but in the end if you're listening to a track you know and love yet are thinking about something else I think that's bad -or at least bad for the gear you're evaluating. Just my 2 cents. I'll shut up now 😉. Be well!

It may make you put aside your analytical side because there is nothing to analyze. Like a dirty window compared to a microscope, you aren't going to discover anything. If you want a party speaker, it can be had for far less outlay of cash.

I agree with Andrew. Feeling the music is the point of this hobby, at least for most people. Think of it this way, if someone is having a blast listening to their $50 Bluetooth speaker but you're not having that much fun with an expensive hifi setup, something has gone wrong.

Being a fan of Klipsch since 1989, when I bought the Chorus, which I still use, I appreciate the honesty of this review. A lot of the members of a Facebook Group I'm a member of bash Klipsch, though, honesty, not as many as praise them. But they got me thinking, and so I bought a pair of KEF Q350, Wharfdale Diamond 12.2, SVS Prime, and Klipsch RP-600M, and a speaker selector for A/B/C/D/E comparisons. I like the new speakers--I do-- but if I had to go back to just one pair (which I don't want to do), I would keep the Chorus. My favorite instruments are the percussion instruments, especially drums, and I have never heard more realistic drums than on the Chorus. The snap of the snare drum or a rim shot: can't beat the old Klipsch!

Thank you, Ron. I just purchased a pair of Klipsch Heresys from Safe and Sound.(black). I do have some vintage Tannoys that with the female voice are absolutely tear jerking incredible. I also have some Klipsch RP 600 Mll's. I have found that Klipsch takes about a thousand hours to really start becoming their best. The RP 600 sound excellent, except for there is something missing in the mid range. But what they do good, they do really good. Just like the Tannoy's do voices that sound real. In my room I have found that the Klipsch sounds better a foot to sixteen inches from the wall, even though I thought speakers with rear ports are supposed to be farther away from the wall. I am also glad that you mentioned that somewhere in your system with Klipsch you need tubes, because that is so true. I currently use a Black Ice Audio F-35 for my integrated amp. and a tubed Black Ice Audio Fusion DAC transport. Thank you Ron for doing this episode on Klipsch speakers. If you remember their old commercial, Klipsch, Pissing off your neighbors since 1946.

I think my personal experience with the original heresies mirror exactly what Stevens said above. The heresy were my first “real speaker“. They did something magical for me with both imaging and sound staging. Before them I had never told in my speakers. Before them I had never sat in the perfect triangle. This was my gateway into not only speakers but speaker set up. Because of its mismatch in frequency response and dispersion between drivers some notes were placed forward while others were placed back in the mix. This was like magic to me. I did not realize that this was because of linear deficiencies in the speaker. Voices were upfront which I loved and slightly bloomy which made them feel less stale and more emotional and in the room and in my head like a dream. Two channel movies were transformed into 3-D experiences. Fast forward to buying measurement mics, rew, some more linear speakers, some open baffle speakers, the RP 600 M’s with GR research upgrade and I finally heard what a speaker sounded like without “the box.” Especially in vocal passages in movies, I can’t unhear the box. I can’t unhear the frequency shifts that create the illusion of soundstaging. Ignorance truly is bliss. The one thing that has consistently gotten better over time and setup, however is my bass! Diy subs and measure measure measure and placement and time align. Crossed at 80hz, and now the differences in speakers I toss in the mix are much less pronounced. Get your low end dialed in and the rest is just icing on the cake.

My wife is far from perfect too, which doesn't stop me from loving her almost like H4 ;-) My previous speakers were B&W 683 S2 + PV1D sub. I was happy with them but always dreamed of vintage speakers, specifically the JBL L100. The dealer gave L100 to me for listening and added the cheaper Heritage 4 for comparison. I was not previously familiar with these speakers and generally had little knowledge of the Klipsch brand. I came in for the L100 and left with the H4. Why? Because they totally surprised me. Yes, it's true that these are not the best balanced speakers, but that's what makes them more fun to listen to (for me). In retrospect the B&W's were almost boring in their predictability. When you spent a lot of time with music this predictability is no longer a value (for me). I love Heresy's dynamics/mid bass/punch. Sometimes I turn on the sub but I don't have a permanent need to use it. I love hearing how the cabinet works, hearing the drumstick hit the edge of the snare drum because I can hear (it's so damn tangible) the wood hitting the metal. I love that I don't know how the H4 will play familiar pieces. Because they usually play unearthly but happen to disappoint usually when the recording quality is poor. So…I absolutely agree with (almost) everything (party speaker? what?) Ron said in his review but at the same time I love (almost) everything that he finds flawed about H4.

Safe and Sound is my LOCAL brick and mortar audio shop only abou 6 miles down the road, their new home is simply...IMPRESSIVE! I just purchased a beautiful pair of Forte' Four's in distressed oak with the lambs wool grills from my guy Dave about three weeks ago now as of this writing. I bought them without auditioning! Having been a Klipschorn owner for 14 years, and knowing that Roy voiced them to be as close to the A6's as possible, that was all I needed. And learning that the woofer in the Forte' is not used in ANY OTHER SPEAKER other then the................. .......brand new JUBILEE !!! The speakers are NOT toed in at all in my 18x24' space, the stereo image is HUGE across my 3 seat couch! ((O: wonderful ! They sit right beside my Martin Logan Classic '9's Love having two completely different speaker designs in the same space...! Thanks for the Heresy presentation.

Nice review Ron! I think what makes the Heresy's special, and this extends to the rest of the heritage line are the dynamics and presence you noted with the bluesy acoustic track. Indeed, anything with snappy percussive strings shines on these speakers. But I think that undersells the speakers a little. That sounds a little like a party trick. Yeah they are loud and punchy but I don't think these are party speakers (not enough bass unless you have a sub). To me, that presence is what makes the speakers so good for ALL types of music. Calling it a party speaker one the one hand means it is lively and punchy - which would be great qualities for listening to classical music. On the other hand it may imply that the speaker is good for parties but not precise enough for critical listening and I don't think that is the case. When I listen to my Heresy's, I can tell there's a little coloration BUT the music sounds alive. Instruments are so textured not because the treble is extended but because of the dynamics. And it's not just the sound of the instruments but the nuances of performance, the "feel" and "touch" of the performer that come through so clearly on Klipsch Heritage speakers. That's what makes them sound so realistic and lifelike despite having a somewhat colored sound. Also, that color is a nice one, it has nice tone. I think of a Fender Twin Reverb - yeah there are cleaner amps, but the dynamics and tone of a fender twin just sounds NICE and makes you spine tingle. Oh yeah and getting them off the ground really helps. I have short stands - maybe 8" and they really helping with imaging. Off the ground + subwoofer is the way to set these up. Love those Neumann binaural heads - I got to play with those in college. Fantastic for capturing drums (room mic) and acoustic guitar. We even had a pair of Stax headphones for listening to binaural recordings. Blew my mind. I digress.

Klipsch speakers definitely have a "party" vibe to them, as you said. To me, that is not a bad thing. With the reworked crossover, which certainly helps with their prior model brightness issues, these are certainly on my short-list. Thanks for the great video!

Excellent and thorough review. Appreciate you taking the time to do this. I love my Heresy IV and once music is turned on I usually listen long into the night. Very enjoyable and lifelike sounding speaker that does so much right! Love the bass. Sounds clear and punchy. Midrange is mostly great and lifelike sounding but I agree occasionally something’s going on in the mids (uneven frequency response?) that sounds a bit off. I can’t see spending more on speakers if these fit your room. Other speakers will have their own set of compromises. What Klipsch has done with the Heresy IV works wonderfully for me. Overall, I love them! Thanks again for your review.

Biggest strength of all Klipsch speakers is FAST bass. Drums have awsome attack. Brass sounds great, acoustic guitars too. The biggest problem with the Heresy is the box sound. Bass extension isn't a problem. Put some damping in the box and you have a real winner. The crossover choice ain't bad, it gives the speaker some life and character that I can thoroughly enjoy. If these didn't have that bloom I would love to buy them.

Great review! I went from ATC SCM50 ASLT to Heresy IV (to save space) and even though the ATC were great and better speakers from an objective standpoint (more transparent, wider frequency range and 'correct' sounding), the Heresy's IV really breath new life to my old records in a fun and engaging way. I dont analyse the sounds and instruments in a track any longer, the music is at the centre stage. I think the Heresy IV's also has good synergy with my Accuphase e370 which is quiet, dynamic and smooth.

This is a great speaker for rock and roll. I can picture Led Zeppelin blasting on these speakers or AC/DC or Van Halen and it sounding great. This is the ideal speaker for a teenaged audiophile or a college student. My Grandpa had a pair of the Klipsch La Scallas and they were giant box speakers but could really blast rock well. I used to crank up Phill Collins In the Air Tonight on my Grandpa’s speakers and when that tom tom intro came in it sounded absolutely epic on those speakers cranked to ear splitting volume levels. lol I really enjoyed playing music on those speakers when I was a kid. Also with these speakers I think they could benefit from putting them in an in-wall bookshelf where you would get the added bass boost from being in the wall. That would probably solve the need or want to add a subwoofer without having to get one.

First off, thanks for doing a song-by-song for review instead of the endlessly repeated “party speaker”, “high efficiency” review we’ve gotten from everyone else. With that said, I was kinda disappointed that, for being a “party” speaker, no hard hitting rock and roll song was played - a song that would get you up and singing along or playing air guitar; these were all sit-on-the-couch-and-stare-at-the-speakers kinds of songs. I have gone to hear various Klipschs and I never hear the out-in-front, exciting presentation that everyone raves about. Add the need for an additional subwoofer(s) to take up even more space and having to cobble together/buy stands to get these to a good height sounds like just too much trouble.

I find it interesting that many really like veiled synthetic sounding speakers. Of course you need a sub with these speakers. All you have to do is look at the spec sheet. Once a sub takes over those frequencies the sound of the Heresy changes dramatically. If you are looking for a speaker to sound live and hear an acoustic guitar as if you are in the room well here it is! Some complain about needing a sub but have no issue with monster Tower speakers dominating a room. I think the Heresy’s are great

Ron, you talked (just barely) about the importance of getting the Heresys off the floor and (presumably) on stands, to raise the sound stage, etc. which I would agree with. Just from an appearance standpoint alone, I couldn't deal with them sitting on the floor. It would have been great if you had put them up on stands, at least briefly, so we could have heard what I'm sure would have been a noticeable improvement in openness and image height. There are many hi-fi channels on youtube. I have to choose the ones I think give me real quality. I follow NRD because Ron is a true enthusiast who in an entertaining but equally precise way describes how the product presents music and what experiences it gives him as a listener. The words used are easy to relate to. I find that this more subjective part of the reviews provides a useful basis for assessing how I would experience this product. But the sound clips with comments and measurements really constitute the added value I get from NRD. All this is connected and gives a holistic picture of a connection between objective data, technology and the central and most important thing: What experiences you can expect if you buy the product in question - For better or worse. NRD is in my opinion the reference among youTube's hi-fi reviewers. NRD is the center of a scale from joyless objectivist Floyd Toole orthodoxy, to pure subjectivism where the reviewer and the words in the fairy tale about the reviewer's experience become more important than the product. The channels at the extremes of this scale I do not bother to spend time on.

A good video, again Ron. I hear that boxiness in the mid to lower mids, and agree that getting them off the floor will help in that regard. I also think based on these being initially introduced in the late 50's that vintage jazz like John Coltrane, Kenny Dorham, Miles Davis will be at home with these, conversely, many female jazz vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, and Anita O'Day for that matter will sound great on these and a lot of vintage rock will sound great with these, especially older garage rock may work well. This is my cup of tea and can see these rocking out to that kind of stuff, not so much modern rock with its heavier bass, but I think they can do many 70's arena rock groups like Fleetwood Mac's seminal LP Rumours can play well on these. That is, if you keep them as is and not augment the lower end with subs.

(stashed now since 1 bass-cone missaligned & started rubbing magnet) ...When i 1'st hooked the Tannoys up, it took me like 30 seconds to realise they're a keeper for £100 (a pre-e/Bay priced private sale) & much more life-like than the large 3-way Kefs they replaced, especially on drums, voice & clarity, such immediacy of sound i'd never experienced before then. When i put the Kefs back in place for a potential buyer after a week of just hearing the Tannoys , the Kefs sounded so awful & veiled, almost muffled in comparison that i was almost knocked-back in genuine shock of how i once thought them excellent.

What I hear you saying is that they are fun with rock, jazz, blues, and most pop. One genre noticeably absent is classical. Then again, based on what I heard and your descriptions, I would not expect the Heresys to excel with classical, especially big classical like Beethoven's 9th or anything Mahler. Classical pieces need excellent detail, clarity, articulation, and a wide dynamic range without overhang to sound their best. Which is why personal taste is so important in choosing a speaker and why reviews that point out strengths, weaknesses, sound profile, etc. in different genres is so helpful. While fun is an important aspect of enjoying music, it's not always the right aspect. Sometimes enjoyment is in subtlety, refinement, expressiveness, expansiveness, contrast, effortlessness, etc. While I enjoy rocking out some times, other times I enjoy symphonies. In contrast, my brother enjoys rocking out all the time and couldn't care less about symphonies. My take away for this video is that the Heresy IVs would be a better fit for my brother than they would be for me. Which is exactly the type of information good reviews provide. Good Job!

@michaellundy3551
@michaellundy3551 3 жыл бұрын
@@johto That depends on your definition of back wall. I call the wall behind the speakers the front wall since that's the way I'm facing and the back wall is the wall behind me. If you are referring to the wall behind the speakers then you are correct. open baffle speakers need to be at least three feet out into the room and more is better. It has to do with the timing delay of the reflected wave. You want the reflected wave off the wall behind the speaker to reach your ears at least 6 milliseconds after the direct wave. If the reflected wave reaches your ears too close to the direct wave, the sound is smeared and the soundstage collapses. If the delay is 6 milliseconds or more, the reflected wave is interpreted as a separate signal and the soundstage opens up. Three feet gives a 6 millisecond delay. The longer the separation between the direct and reflected waves (the farther away from the wall behind the speakers) , the lager and more expansive the soundstage becomes. The distance requirement is what limits the use of open baffle speakers. It doesn't mean they can't be in a smaller room, my man cave is 12' x 14' x 8' while my living room is 20' x 25' x 10' but my wife won't let me have speakers pulled out that far into the living room while I can put them anywhere I want in the man cave (glorified name for a child's bedroom with no children left in the house).

My setup has a McIntosh c50 pre, mc352 for Magnepan 1.7i and I also have two stereo PrimaLuna Prologue 4 tube amps that I plan to use with the Hersey IV I ordered a couple of days ago. I am going to biamp using Kt88,s for the woofers and el34’s for the mids and highs. When I had my Cornscala’s I also bi amped them as well, not because they needed more power, I wanted the enhanced bass from the Kt88 and the smooth magic from the el34’s. I started out with the .7i on your recommendation and acquired the mc352 to bring out the best in the .7’s. I also run two REL Tzero subs with the 1.7i and I think they will come in handy with the Heresy as well. I went to the 1.7i’s to get more of what the .7 were giving me. In all honesty I love the open sound of the Magnepan but I do miss the box sound the Cornscala gave.

I am new subscriber this channel, and I love your content. Your comments are spot on, and your discernment in sound reproduction quality is astute. I have to wonder though, how much difference there is in a different pair of ears hearing the same passages in the same setup. What might be missing or colored in one person's opinion might be perfectly wondrous to another. There are so many things we don't know about human sound perception and it's effect to an individual's brain. Also, I believe there are learned responses to certain types of music. One genre may kick butt, and another suck, in the same person's opinion in the exact same system. I am 61 now, and worked in a noisy environment full of air hoses, running machinery, and honking fork lifts for many years. I haven't had my hearing tested, but I know my wife has to repeat herself to me a lot. I think it's her tone frequency at "Wifey Hertz", also known as WH. Even through my Bose cubes with sub-woofer, the passages you played sounded glorious to me. I've always been concerned about Heresy's ability to reach deep and hit the bass notes to my liking. I didn't note that here, so maybe Klipsch finally resolved that almost universal criticism in the Version IV's. Thanks for the review!!

Ya lost me at the same old "party type vibe" and was ready to move on, yet I found myself watching the entire video. I personally just enjoy great music and really couldn't care less about measurements. I personally love my Heresy IVs, coming from a guy who's only played with various B&W's, Heco, Triangle, and begun this journey with Polk. One thing worth mentioning is that my fiance who really doesn't get this hobby, stated when playing her Neil Youngs - Live at Carnegie Hall 1970 "WOW! Sounds like we're right there!", her glancing over at me with her jaw dropped. Your style is different, and at first, I didn't dig it. Yet, I may just be back and eventually subscribe. I guess it's like this. What good is something to you no matter how expensive it is if you don't enjoy it? I've heard how "great" Airpods max sound, which may be true, but I've also watched many reviews refer to their sound as soulless. What good is a piece of audio equipment if it doesn't give you the "feels" when you listen to it? I guess if you're using them analytically that would be one case. I mean, if it's that bad for you, how do you ever enjoy music in a car?

I see the graphs of these things with db across hz, and I wonder, is that sort of measurement consistent for both "up and down signal db" and "across Hz" if there are multiple tones being played through them simultaneously. By up and down db, I mean if track that is being played is low in volume, is a peak relative between hz A and B thats 4 db at reference, is that relative relationship still there? Like at lower volumes could the speaker now play them evenly or reverse which one is relatively higher and lower? And by "across hz" I mean is that line graph or curve still consistent if two or three or a hundred sounds are being played at once across the spectrum. Like in most music there is way more than one instrument playing. Is there a way to measure if the captured db relationship between the different hz remains like in the static tone measurements? I guess thats why I value the subjective impressions, as while the obj measurement tells me stuff only in relation to what it measures, the subjective stuff cuts to the chase as to weather or not the thing sounds good, or at least what it sounds like relatively to whatever it is compared against. Though really the subjective impressions usually end up telling me more about the reviewer, its fun at least.

For Heritage series Klipsch recommends the speakers be 2-18” from the wall. Bass can boom when pulled too far from the wall. Hersey is my least favorite of the heritage line and still in your video they sound poor compared to properly set up as recommended by Klipsch. The male vocal bloomed and I bet it has to do with your setup.

To me they sound like they're voiced to make music sound like a modern concert - that was my first flash impression. I had Heresy's in the late 80s and I couldn't live with them - too bright (different than these sound for sure - these even sound a bit recessed as opposed to sharp or edgy). And, for all the comments about them being on the floor, they had two personalities. On the floor was a huge mid bass hump (seems even more pronounced with these IVs) that really made drum kicks over power the mix and male vocals really hard to listen to. Up on stands did reduce the thump, but brought a cliff at 100Hz and also an upper mid suck out, that for some reason made the sharpness in this zone worse. I agree with Ron that horns worked well, but nearly everything else was colored (and i gotta disagree on the piano - the new ones still sound off IMO). Overall, they were VERY lively and head turning and the way they threw the singer on acoustic recordings into the room was cool, but the crazy ragged freq response bothered me pretty quickly after getting them in my home

Actually, you are sitting too close to them. You need to be 12-15 feet away from them. That's when they start to gel. Also they are very fussy on what is feeding them. Another thing is that they prefer a certain cable. I had them hooked up with transparent musicwave and they were muddy. Switch it out for a canare 4s11 and boom ...they balance out very well. As for the bass output, they are designed to go close to the wall and it takes them a good 150hours to run in. How do I know? I had them at work for a month

Boy, I can hear that boxy-ness IMMEDIATELY. I find ALL the legacy designs have it. I have to think it is intentional. They try to make up for lack of deep bass with this chesty "FM radio DJ" thickness. Maybe some huge wood clamps on the cabinets would help I think more than anything else, the cabinet resonance is what obliterated the resolution further up the frequency spectrum. That is what is obscuring your acoustic guitar.
