I caught it. I wasn't expecting the ship to need to ditch the armor though. I thought it was just an explanation for how the ship survived crash landing on At Attin. Also, Tak probably uparmored the Onyx because he expected At Attin to have defenses that would try to shoot him down. Something the CURRENT DAY pirates might not be thinking about. Remember, only Neel saw At Achron's roof gun.

Was literally about to say the same thing. What we saw at the end of 6 was the true form of the ship. That was the Onyx Cinder, what we saw the whole rest of the season was just the armor.

@@tilarium2 I like to think that, as you said, the inner ship is the Onyx Cinder, the one that would strike fear into those who had known of it's tale, and the outer layer is what Rennod put on so that he could travel from port to port without drawing the attention of any police type forces in the galaxy. Like, well that's just a freighter, no way that's the Onyx Cinder. The Clark Kent, unassuming cover, to the Superman that is the Onyx Cinder.

In the Dune book, Paul uses the Voice when he gave his speech to the Fremen. In the books, the Voice is very subtle and can be used in a way to make people think they made a decision on their own. Jod could have subtly used the Force on the pirates.

The ship thing was kind of hinted at in episode 5 when the recording of Tak Rennod said something about how the Onyx Cinder was clad in armor. So it basically just had ridiculous amount of extra armor plating that they shed with the demolition sequence.

in the next episode, one scene I'm betting on is the kids getting to At Attin and falling into the "auto landing" sequence that they experienced when they went to At Acryon (sp?). The auto-landing control brings them to a platform near the mint and they are greeted by an army of driods waiting to load their vessel with a million credits. My theory is At Attin was the central hub for controlling currency/inflation and the many analysts were responsible for monitoring all the trade markets across the galaxy.

Zero Friends Again also describes the situation that the kids and Jod find themselves in during this episode. The kids are without their friends - Jod and SM-33 - thanks to Jod's betrayal, but now they have the ship again, shed of its past history, and have what they need to make their way back home. Jod lost his friends by betraying the kids and SM-33 being shot, and he doesn't even have the Onyx Cinder, but has bargained for the means to get to At-Attin. Both are stripped down to the essentials to get to the end.

Personally I think the ships shell was meant to fool others, the ship itself was actually a powerhouse but they disguised it and made it look old and busted. Also would make for a good way to escape the law by changing the ships appearance

In my opinion, it seems like rannod discovered at attin but died upon arrival. So I don’t think he had anything to do with at attin in any way, other than wanting the “treasure”.

You may be on to something. His ship was crashed and his loyal Droid was left in it with plenty of dead bodies. If he took control of At-Attin, he would have had his ship and SM-33 recovered. The only explanation where he gains power there that makes sense is that after taking control of At-Attin, the pirate then went to plunder and destroy all the other Jewel planets that knew of its location. Something goes horribly wrong on the last planet, so he sets the ships course back to At-Attin and give the final orders to SM-33 as he perishes. Knowing the legend, the Emperor names Operation Cinder after the legendary pirate ship that wiped out the Jewel planets. Most realistically, he destroyed all thw coordinates before going to At-Attin and the Onyx Cinder was shit down by the schools cannon before he ever had a chance to plunder it.

Maybe I’m so naive but I was gutted Jod turned on them but even more so in the next episode (which was the weakest) where I was hoping he’d somehow redeem himself as I really did have some faith in him how he took Win aside - in his own way - and how in the previous episode when he saved them he hugged Neel and pulled in Win at the same time to comfort him so it felt really jarring this current episode he’s all in with the venture to At-Atin. I really hope he redeems himself. I also think it’s interesting he never revealed his lightsaber to the bad guys… interesting…😊

Maybe he draws the line at killing kids, so when it comes down to that he prevents the pirates from killing them. But that doesn't mean he won't kill all the adults on the planet to get the riches that he wants to plunder. I hope they don't just let him go after he spaced the captain of the freighter. They let Long John Silver go in _Treasure Planet_ and _Treasure Island._

The outer hull of the Onyx Cinder reminds me of how in The Expanse series of books they weld junk onto the hole of the Rocinante to change the ship's profile as a disguise to hide from the Earth and Mars navies. In addition to serving as extra armored plating, this seems like just the thing a pirate ship might do to disguise its appearance from authorities or to make the vessel seem less threatening when approaching other targets.

I think Tak Rennod might not actually be a pirate, but more someone disguised as one. Which makes sense of the ship as well. A sleek, put together, ship disguised as a pirate ship. Further leading to the mystery of who and why it was on At Attin. Maybe someone from the Republic connected to the At planetary system and such.
