Exactly. My town is about this size and go on about diversity in the community. Statically, the town is 98.7% white Christian, one Arab, a handful of Mexicans and South Americans, and two prominent Fillipino families. Per our own data, no Jews, no Muslims, and very few Catholics. Even the two Chinese restaurants are owned and staffed by white people. I've never seen a Latino in this town that doesn't work at a Mexican restaurant or do lawn service. Yeah, we're really a melting pot. I'll put money on it that mayonnaise is our number one selling condiment.

I mean it does though. This area is middle TN. They were confederate allied (East were mostly union) and there are very old, racist reasons why the town is mostly white (not all white, the whole town is not at the meeting) that affect the population today but there isn’t a modern reason outside of the hostility of the state itself, something a small town like thud couldn’t do much about. I know there are many places in the south where people still are openly hostile to people of different backgrounds and races but many aren’t. You’ll find these small pockets of small towns where they are like an island of progress in a sea of ignorance and I think this town is one of those. I’ve lived in East TN my whole life and have found towns like these mostly in Appalachia. It seems the flatter the land the smoother the brains of the people that live there 😂. But in all seriousness towns like this are who we need fighting back. It takes alot to get these sleepy towns riled up about anything, even important stuff so the fact they are making a fuss over this shows they truly do not want it in their town. Unfortunately I know many towns that would embrace it. And let’s not even get into the disconnect between leadership and the public in these places. Elections are much easier to influence and many bad actors use this to gain control. Many areas here have a populace who is loving and accepting but leadership that is stuck in the 50s and it really seems hopeless sometimes. I dunno if the elections are rigged, if most voters don’t even think about the way they should vote, misinformed voting base, or all three. There has been times politicians have convinced the public that their opponent did something bad that the politician in question actually did to turn public opinion in their favor. Then it comes out it was actually them (or not. Most of these lies never get uncovered) and much of the public downright denies it and calls it misinformation because they don’t want to admit to voting for the wrong person and double down instead. It sucks. So I guess you’re right technically, it’s not an accident things are the way they are, not being very diverse, in these places but not for the reasons you insinuated.
