An enlightening lecture in which Dr Rajan lays out his vision of what needs to be done so that India can walk the high growth path towards development. While the focus on boosting manufacturing should not be abandoned, a much more concerted effort should go into the development of services, where India is renowned and has an advantage. The manufacturing bus is already gone and moreover, the situation is very different from what was conducive to China's growth. Most of the value added is now in services and to take advantage of this, we need to invest in quality and accessible education, healthcare. Most importantly, democracy is an asset and can be of immense help in promoting India's growth as a service exporter. (consulting, telemedicine etc)

Decentralization leads to corruption and inefficiency. It is easier to buy influence in a smaller government with fewer resources than a larger one. Small governments do not have the ability to bring about comprehensive socio-economic change in a cohesive fashion, which is required for long-term planning and is the kind of planning India desperately needs. We need big-ticket items like infrastructure, 5G and the development of our military industrial complex. The short-sighted and arbitrary nature of such governments is what has caused India to lag behind China and allocate its resources injudiciously. The freebie culture with free toasters and movie tickets has to stop.

I think Dr Rajan missed a crucial point as to why the manufacturing route worked. It is because it provides mass employment, taking the disguisedly unemployed in agriculture to 'serf' jobs in manufacturing. Examples of 'lord' jobs like telemedicine or IT professionals/ Apple products/Cloud computing provide employment to very few and the highly skilled amongst them. To support service centric economy, you either need access to the global market or must have strong domestic demand. Low level service jobs like the kirana shop can't have access to the global market and the domestic demand isn't supported by a large population who might have need for those services. Manufacturing helps to kill both these birds with one stone. It provides export based global market access and it creates a population better equipped not to do fancy telemedicine but to bolster domestic demand of low level services. I think the argument that prioritising a sliver of high skilled engineers, doctors and consultants can offset the problems of the mass populace languishing in climate change addled fields is a deeply mistaken one. India's workforce needs the 'serf' jobs because the high end jobs simply don't have the capacity to support mass employment.

Under UPA2 watch the nationalized banks gave 800 Billion dollars as loans to all the power & infra companies. Puffff... 400 Billion gone(Lanco group itself owed 55,000 crores to banks). RRR(RaghuRama Rajan) did not do anything from sep 2013 to May 2014. Then comes Modi govt. He started Asset Quality Review (AQR) in June 2015 and asked all the banks to publish real numbers in just 3 months(He allowed to publish fake numbers in UPA2). Just imagine , all the wrong doings in 10 years will show up in next 3 months. Here is the trick, RRR will be hailed as a great person to bring this AQR program and all the mud will stick to Modi govt(People will think that previously everything was good, in just one year from Apr 2014 to Jul 2015 Modi mismanaged economics of this country). ONE SHOT 2 BIRDS. Here comes the twist(This is why Modi is Modi, do not underestimate Modi), Modi did not say anything. Let the RRR do what he wants and neither Modi wants to protect this corrupt people. Though there is some bad coverage in public due to this exercise, Modi capitalized this situation and bought the Insolvency& bankruptcy code( the default company has to pay money or else the promoter will be on road) which is even more crucial. For once and all Modi cleansed the banking system. Modi then recapitalized the banks with additional 2-lakh crores, merged some banks. At current stage Indian banks are the stongest banks in the world with the highest capital adequacy ratio(which measures the health of a bank) in history of Indian banks. I will give you a contrast example of Nandan Nilekani. Nandan was part of UPA2 as cabinet rank minister for AADHAR project and also contested from Bangalore as Congress MP. He showed his desire to become a politician by contesting in elections. Nandan lost election and met Modi in 2014 and explained him about the AADHAR and future plans. Modi gave the nod and then Nandan went on contributing to UPI(Now it is one of back bone of Indian economy) with the collaboration of NPCI. And now Nandan is working on ONDC which can transform the e-commerce field. Neither Modi is hateful to Nandan(as he contested as congress mp), nor Nandan have any thing against Modi. Both are patriots from 2 different parties. For patriots parties do not matter, what matter for them is India. This is how a technocrat could a patriot, you don't need congress or BJP to contribute to India. If RRR is a real patriot, he can follow the path of Nandan, just contribute to India. Who is stopping RRR. My opinion is don't be a politician and hide under the skin of technocrat or economist. Come join Congress or start a new political party like Arvind Kejriwal. (Any way I don't like AK also, but he has the right to do politics). RRR, please either choose Nandan path or choose AK path(Both are good in their own way). Don't be like this. Please use you brain for India not for silly things.

Democracy alone can't pull people out of poverty. The average people keeps asking government job and some politicians keep hating businesses that create jobs. This attitude can't pull people out of poverty. Poverty will be eradicated only when govt encourages manufacturing sector, to get people out of agriculture. 70 years of Congress rule was totally against manufacturing, and this so-called economist also opposes manufacturing in India. Then how can we call him a well-wisher of India? China pulled it's people out of poverty through manufacturing. Should we keep importing from China forever? This economist, never understanda or doesn't want people to understand. 10 years of Congress made us dependent on Chinese imports, and labour reforms were neglected so much that, Indian textile companies shifted to Bangladesh. We need to correct these mistakes. Sorry, Raghuram Rajan, you are wrong. Your big words don't impress us. Your ideas won't create jobs. It seems even you know that but you want to deliberately mislead us, fir your selfish aims. Please stay in US. Indians are realizing what is good for them. And we are making progress. Slowly, everyone will realise this.

So basically Raghuram is ok with India being a serf when it comes to services - our doctors/nurses serving the aging lords in UK/Europe but not ok being a serf when it comes to manufacturing. Because , Indians being Indians , once they get the taste of 'building' something they're not going to stop. They're going to build for India and in the long run this is not in best interests of the west. None of the big powers have grown to power with a service based economy. All of them have grown with a manufacturing based economy. India is large enough to accomodate chip design as well as chip manufacturing . It just needs a visionary leader to back the countrymen to think 20 years ahead instead of just looking for immediate returns.

@Acheron99 Жыл бұрын
He never said we don't concentrate on low-skill manufacturing. To maximise the value that we can deliver to global supply chains, we must divert atleast some funds towards knowledge based economy. Create better environment for r&d and design to stop brain drain. Indian Banking System hit the waterloo when Mr. Rajan was RBI Governor. The Banking system collapsed with "Phone Banking" (Minister and Party Leaders call up the Bank Manager over phone and make a loan with few hundred crores to his benami business head and then divert that money to real estate etc.) Modi government took the following drastic steps starting 2014 to address the issues created by these reckless looters. Now Indian banking system is in good shape with both Nationalized Banks and Private Sector and Scheduled Banks hitting highest profitability and lowest NPAs in straight rows. Mr. Rajan should be ashamed that a country had to pass the following laws back to back and work their ass out for almost 5-6 years to clean up the mess he silently approved as RBI Governor. Still he has the guts to give these lectures. 1. Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), 2016 acting as a major deterrent for irresponsible borrowing. 2. Amendments to Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, which helped differentiate between genuine errors in commercial decisions and actual acts of corruption, protected bankers from frivolous charges, allowing them to make lending decisions without fear, while keeping the stringent punishment for actual corruption intact 3. Fugitive Economic Offenders Act, 2018, that allowed attachment and confiscation of the property of a fugitive economic offender and disentitlement of the offender from defending any civil claim. 4. Enhanced Access and Service Excellence (EASE) initiative, that helped build a system for early warning signals to detect bad loans. 5. Strict RBI Guidelines, unlike the paper guidelines during UPA1 and UPA2. Check facts here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWWsq3yYmJaVja8
