An old man’s death really saddened me. He could have evacuated but his insurance was canceled so he stayed to try and save his home. Sadly my home Washington state is just as bad. This cancer has spread throughout the local cites surrounding Seattle. Right by my house there was a bridge that needed to be replaced, it got delayed for over a year, why? because they made a "mistake" in the bidding process. In other words we have some law that says you have to promote minority owned construction companies and apparently this wasn't done. My city has all these DEI programs installed, we must hire more women fire fighters, or lgtbq fire fighters, a certain amount of minorities etc. Every government agency is like this now, every school, every police dept, every transit thing, all DEI B.S.

People seem to forget that CA has had significant periods of R leadership. Go back to 80s and 90s. Much of that with a R also in the white house. That was a period in CA when "the homeless" became a regular part of our lives and language. We got a crack epidemic. We had surge in gang violence and most all in CA knew of the bloods and the crips. We had natural disasters like the '91 oakland hills fire and other fires and flooding, though back then we didn't look to blame a politician for every last thing. No, we remember R leadership just fine. We also know that it wasn't too long ago that a president lectured about raking forests and exploding tress. That president's fed gov't controlled almost 60% of CA forests. Last I heard, he did nothing with regards to all the federal forest land in CA and in other western states that suffer fires. But at least he is out there pointing fingers again. He is good at that.

I'm a Californian, and I respectfully and cautiously disagree with you. Yes, for years a lot of those people keep voting in the woke politicians. But in the last couple of years, I see things moving slowing towards RED. In November, I think the presidential split was around, or close to 60D/40R. That's getting pretty dang close to 50/50. This unfortunate population in SoCal are overwhelmingly Dems. The Dem vote increased for President Trump in November. Now the state is no longer a “Golden State” as was once a proud slogan. Today, it’s an over taxed political cash cow. Voters sued the state for a gas tax that was not voter approved! Next voting cycle the tax was approved! Voters voted to not have school vouchers even thought both public education or private education were allowed with a voucher; public only was voted to remain-really?! -- Just ask where the money for homeless, high speed rail, Covid , additional reservoirs , school and college upgrades, libraries, Fire fighters, police has gone or being used. All have been repeated “tax needs” for decades! -- My bet is ; the issues and fires are: Trumps fault , “a local issue”, the last office holder we need more taxes, climate change….scoundrels! Don't ask me why, but that happens in a lot of places. NH and MA often have Republican governors while voting for Democrat presidents and senators. NH used to vote more red federally but is becoming more like MA. It may come down to these voters knowing that they don't want the Democrat policies locally, but they are ok at the federal level where it won't effect them as much. I'm so sorry for everyone affected by these horrible fires; so much can not be replaced, and lives certainly can't be. Policy-wise. Fires in California have always been a factor due to the Mediterranean climate. We must stop allowing families to build homes in fragile geographic areas unless they are willing to deal with the consequences of living in uninsured homes. Areas such as the Louisiana Delta, coastal Mississippi, Alabama, Virginia, Texas, coastal California, and the Central Valley, Florida, and the Outer Banks will decimate insurance coffers that most middle-class Americans need. Still, they can't afford the higher rates to mitigate and supplement these high-risk areas. Multi-millionaires and billionaires will be fine, but most of us are not that. As the United States community starts to recognize the fragility of some geographic regions and the economic impact that fire, floods, earthquakes, and hurricanes bring to these areas that economically impact all of us, we as a nation must reevaluate our needs vs our wants. An honest conversation must start now, and if the government is not responsive, and they won't be, it's broken. It's time for Americans to work together for policy change with new, younger, forward-thinking, honest government officials, no matter how divided we seem. We must think outside the box.

I lived in California for nearly 15 years and just moved out this last summer. I wanted to move a long time ago but it just wasn’t feasible. But as soon as the opportunity arose I took it. Unfortunately I live in another Blue state but I wanted to live on the Pacific coast and the entire coast is Blue. But it’s certainly better than California in nearly every way except for weather.

These fires have been a nightmare for all of the Los Angeles area, and the state. But even larger problems are coming. First will be the disposal of all of the debris froze the fires, then, the loss of many jobs from businesses burned, and services, like garbage, lawn maintenance, etc are gone. The tax money from 2024 has already come in. Budgets across California are in the red from these revenues, but what about the loss of all that tax base, income, sales taxes? With the socialistic programs, DEI initiatives, sanctuary city supporting illegal immigrants, and homelessness, who will fall in the cracks? It will be the legal working taxpayers that lost everything. We must start adopting budgets we can afford! If my budget won’t allow me to buy a new car, or eat out every week, I don’t do those things to live within my budget and stay out of credit card debt. Our governments need to follow that same principle!
