I've been to Mexico. You must stay in the touristy cities and areas (Puerto Vallarta, Cabo, Cancun). If you dislike touristy areas then Mexico is probably not for you for safety reasons. Don't roam around random parts of the country and think you can "blend in with and befriend the locals". That doesn't end well for many. I know friends who did this and observed houses with people pointing guns. They were lucky to not have been noticed.

As a 40+ year Baja traveller, I camped there in the 90's. Was known as "pretty safe" with occasional late night petty theft with increasing stories of worse crimes of armed robbery and greater threats. Summer months can have dozens of surf campers throughout the area, winter time less. With closer proximity to large towns and increasing drug/cartel influence, 'wild' camping north of San Quintin is indeed risky. These blokes were very capable and I would even suggest they'd be fine doing a local run down there to camp and surf. Considering the hundreds, even thousands, of said camper/travelers annually, it is amongst the rarest of events to hear their fate and I'm heart broken. So, so sorry for their parents and loved ones.
@jakemarlow89984 ай бұрын
I have also been going to Baja for several decades. I spend about four months each year camping in Central Baja. In the last 5 years I have spoken with four separate people who were either robbed at gunpoint, had their vehicle taken at gunpoint, or witnessed those happening to a camp neighbor. All of these were at Pta. San Jose. Although it usually happens at night, it can also happed during the day. PSJ is known for being the most dangerous surf spot on the entire peninsula. Unfortunately, those three guys didn't know. Totally sad.

He said, "I drew them a map on a napkin." Sorry, but that doesn't make sense. That's what people did before the Internet. Today, everyone has a phone in their pocket with access to Google Maps. The road from Mex Hwy 1 to the surf spot is shown on Google Maps. There would be no need to draw a map by hand when the device each of us owns has perfect satellite maps showing the dirt roads in Baja. Also, I find it strange that he would come forward with such a personal story. What could he possibly gain by doing that? Oh, that's right ... he's a photographer who sells his photographs. I wonder if he's had some good sympathy sales this week.

Hundreds of thousands of guns are smuggled into Mexico from the US every year. If the US got a handle on this, the level of violence in Mexico would go way down. But the gun manufacturers would lose out on the sale of hundreds of thousands of guns - so they buy off the politicians and nothing happens. Did you know that there is only one gun store for civilians in Mexico? Most street level criminals don't have guns (unless they are close to the US border which is flush with guns.) And if you are about to reply, "guns don't kill people, people kill people," I can guarantee that these three 30 year old athletes could have beat the crap out of their assailants if there wasn't a gun involved.
