Lawmakers got this one backward. They should have kept the safety inspection and ditched the emissions testing. There are many low income people with expired vehicle registrations because their check engine light is on. It cannot pass emissions testing this way and often times the repair is prohibitively expensive. Even if the car runs perfectly fine as long as there is a check engine light it will not pass. What a dumb law.

A vehicle with a passed inspection only shows that for one moment, on that one day, that in the opinion of that one technician, this vehicle was compliant with basic safety standards. A week later that same vehicle could be a menace to society, but hey it's got a current sticker on it. Think of this way, if you were stopped for bald tires in July, but you showed the officer your inspection sticker from last February, should you be excused for the bald tires the car now has? You've got 6 months of good inspection left, so the car is fine, right? They're pointless...
