CPEC is not only crucial for Pakistan but also highly significant for East China. China's trade primarily flows through the Malacca Strait, where it faces potential threats from the United States and its allies, including India and other members of the Quad group. As China and the U.S. are global rivals, the U.S. has consistently aimed to contain China's economic and strategic expansion. This has led to a strong U.S. presence in the Indo-Pacific region, forging alliances with countries such as the Philippines, Japan, Taiwan, and India-all of which have strategic tensions with China. India, in particular, views China's growing market with concern and does not want to see Beijing expanding its influence. Given the vulnerabilities China faces in the Malacca Strait-where its trade shipments could be subject to disruptions or even targeted attacks-CPEC provides an alternative and more secure trade route. CPEC is a flagship project under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and serves as a vital gateway connecting China with the Middle East, Europe, and Africa. It is not only significant for China and Pakistan but also holds immense importance for other regional countries. According to the IMF and World Bank, South Asia is projected to be one of the fastest-growing economic regions in 2025. With a rapidly expanding economy, the region requires substantial energy resources to fuel its industrial, agricultural, and manufacturing sectors. CPEC offers South Asian countries a shorter and more efficient trade route to energy-rich regions like Central Asia and the Middle East. Compared to traditional sea routes, CPEC minimizes risks associated with piracy, ocean storms, and geopolitical tensions in maritime trade corridors. Therefore, diplomatic efforts should highlight CPEC’s strategic advantages and its role in regional connectivity. The Middle East, being a major global oil supplier, also benefits from CPEC, as it enables faster and more cost-effective oil exports to rapidly growing economies. Since oil remains a primary driver of Middle Eastern GDP, efficient trade routes like CPEC contribute to economic growth in both the Middle East and South Asia.

This is why credit for CPEC should not be given to any single government. In Pakistan, governments come and go every five years, completing their political terms within four to five years. Since its inception in 1947, Pakistan has struggled with political instability, and except for the democratic transfer of power in 2013, no government has completed its full tenure. However, CPEC is not a short-term project limited to five, six, or even ten years. It is a long-term strategic initiative that aligns with Pakistan’s national interest and will continue to shape the country’s economic and geopolitical future for decades. Therefore, attributing CPEC’s success to a single government is misleading. It is essential to think about CPEC in broader terms, beyond political party affiliations. While governments play a crucial role in managing and facilitating such strategic projects, CPEC itself is not tied to any specific government-it belongs to Pakistan and its people. Ensuring its success requires a national, long-term vision that transcends political cycles.
