Food is broken down into 3 modes. Mode of Goodness, Mode of Passion, and Mode of Ignorance. Satvik food is the good in Mode of Goodness. Food in Mode of Goodness is food that is fresh, nutritious, sweet, healthy, and not too hot, salty or khatta. It makes you feel good after eating. Food in Mode of passion is food that is too hot, too salty, and too khatta. Also onions and garlic falls in this mode. Food in Mode of passion usually disturbs the body and u don't feel good afterwards in case of acidity, upset stomach, burning sensation, etc. Food in Mode of Ignorance is food that is old, stale, and eggs, and meat falls in this category. It causes disease afterwards. Divinity eats food that is in Mode of Goodness so we eat that only. We offer food to God because of one simple reason. That is, in order to eat, you have to kill something, either plant, or animal. And that is a sin. So you're eating sinful food. By offering food to the divine, he takes the sin and karma away.
