So the Captain's just suppose to be the last one off, that makes sense, he's suppose to be a leader, example and all. Not to actually die, just the last to leave.

The Captain should be the last person off as reasonable, doesn't mean he needs to die and sink with the ship. He should be working until the last reasonable moment. There are some people you can't get off the ship. The SK and Greek vessels the captain was far from the last one off.But when the ship becomes imminent, within a minute there is a futility to try to rescue the last of them.

Chad S With that Greek ship the captain and the crew who knew how to launch the lifeboats were the first off. It was the ship's band that lead the evacuation of it.
@chads8001
@chads8001 6 жыл бұрын
Right, that is true. That is wrong of them to be first ones off. I"m saying they should be on board until it is imminent that the boat is going down. They should be among the last off, but there are people you aren't going to be able to save by then. No way should they be first, but they should be among the last, and not have to die in futility trying to save people who are beyond trapped and you can't get them out.

Chad S absolutely. Captain goes down with the ship if there’s too many people also on board trying to escape. If not though, the captains responsibility should be to make sure his ships not takin anyone down, once everyone’s safe then cap should be able to jump ship. Chad S - memory serves that’s what Captain Bartlett of the Britannic did, he gave the final order (two long whistle blows) to abandon ship, confirmed that all were off, and then waited till water engulfed and sunk his bridge from underneath him and began swimming away. I'm leaning to the yes part. Here's why: As a captain, EVERYONE's life is in the captain hand. And when the captain put them in danger and it's up to him/her to save them. It doesn't necessarily means the captain have to die and sink with the ship. But it certainly means the captain must be the last person to leave the ship. The captain MUST ensure everyone is safe and sound, before saving him/herself. Don't be a captain if you have are either timid or a coward, because being a captain is a huge responsibility.

Of course a captain is not literally required to go down with his ship - but it is his responsibility to stay on the ship for as long as possible in time of crisis to do all he can. Some captains opted to take the ultimate responsibility for the loss of their ship by literally choosing to go down with it, but that is very rare and no one can legally demand a captain to do so.

One captain I’d like to mention who’s not featured in this video is Captain William Thomas Turner of the RMS Lusitania. More people died than survived the Lusitania’s tragic sinking and Captain Turner actually survived it, but he didn’t just leave the ship like he didn’t care. He stayed on board for as long as he could during the Lusitania’s short sinking time to see what could be done, helped as many people evacuate in lifeboats as he could and in the end, got painfully blasted out of the ship by the rushing water. From there, there he just grabbed onto a floating chair in the water before passing out and didn’t regain consciousness until he was found and pulled from the water by the HMS Bluebell several hours after the Lusitania went down.

The Titanic and Lusitania were destroyed in totally different circimstances. The Titanic struck an iceberg and took about 160 minutes to fill with water and sink. The Lusitania was blasted by a torpedo from a German submarine and had gone in 18 minutes. 705 people survived the Titanic disaster, with the majority, about 1520 lost including the Captain, chief and first officers. In contrast, more people survived the Lusitania disaster, 766, than the Titanic, including the Captain, but there were 1198 fatalities.

@@manichairdo6346 Thanks. I recently discovered a website with online records of British merchant seamen for 1915. I looked up my great uncle and found that between December 1914 and December 1915 he sailed on 7 ships (he would sign on for one trip, spend a week or two on shore and then sign on for another). Of those 7 ships, only two survived to the end of the war without being torpedoed.

My understanding of this tradition is that the captain doesn’t necessarily have to literally go down with the ship, he just needs to stay on board for as long as he can to see what can be done, help as many people as possible safely evacuate, and not board a lifeboat only for himself unless he’s the last one to leave.

During World War II, the USN and RN expected captains, if possible to save themselves. The idea was that a ship could be replaced, but a captain’s long experience couldn’t be replaced so easily. For the good of the service and the war effort they were to try to survive and fight again another day.

A British captain goes down with Titanic is 90% because of a belief in honor. And the knowledge that if he didn't go down with the ship and passengers or crew was still on board, his life would be a nightmare for the rest of his time. The ridicule and harassment from society would never end. A fate that the Costa Concordia captain will experience after he leaves prison. In the Navy these things are formalized. The last lifeboat are for the Captain and a few selected personnel and I doubt any Navy Captain would consider it if not all other personnel was accounted for and already in their lifeboats (or confirmed dead).

Another British captain stays on board Lusitania for as long as he can to save as many of his passengers and crew members as possible and almost goes down with the ship, but gets blasted out of it by the rushing water and knocked out cold. He never made it into a lifeboat, but was pulled from the water a few hours after the sinking and eventually regained consciousness. Although the standard is the same for both civilian and military being that the Commanding Officer can not abandon ship until all passengers/crew have been evacuated punishment can vary greatly. The Italian cruise Captain they mentioned although charged with manslaughter will very likely serve much time since manslaughter in Italy averages less than 5 years compared to 20 years in the US. Also Navies have their own sentences which are generally much stricter than civilian. To this day a charge of manslaughter and dereliction of duty in the US Navy can be a life sentence and if it is found that the Commanding Officer was at fault for the sinking can result in death by firing squad.

I saw a film years ago at the hearing the reason to stayed on board was so the ship could not be salvaged by another ship. So if the ship could be saved by another vessel they would have rights to it as long as every crewman had left.

He's supposed to die because a couple of stupid, drunk passengers refused to leave when told to or didn't pay attention/participate in the emergency drills given at the beginning of the cruise? When exactly is he allowed to leave? After he personally rescues every person on a mil. sq foot cruise ship with 5,000 passengers? Since that's not possible, it seems we're automatically sentencing a captain to death.

He is supposed to be one of the last people to leave. He is supposed to make sure every person who can get off, is off the ship before he leaves. Even if they are drunk and refused to participate in the drills, that's still a living person. And yes, it is possible to get all 5,000 passengers off of a sinking ship.

ohmusicsweetmusic Actually, On the C.C sinking in Italy the Capitan made the ship get closer to the land so they could put on a show, and he went off track and got too close... Then he told the passengers it was just a power outage and to go to their rooms so they did... And when he finally told them the truth and evacuated the ship it was already a really bad situation... That Capitan is just a liar, a coward and put people's lives in more danger because he was an idiot... And actually he was the one drinking with some blonde passanger he met when he was suppose 2 be working and sober.... And worst part was he was one of the 1st people off the ship and on land before 95% of the passangers... He evacuated himself immediately...

The_Gaming_Syndrom Exactly... Especially put in that situation your instincts will be to survive it WILL change your actions and thought process and make you do things you never thought you'd do when facing death... Now do I think the Capitan should be the first person off?? No... But then also if the Capitan doesn't have the balls to stay and help the who does?? The crew?? I mean somebody has to stay and load lifeboats and lower them and make sure people are getting off... I agree with you but oh mane it's a hard situation...Very hard call...

I don't see any reason for a caption to do down with his ship once all the crew are safe, if the ship is military and has sensitive equipment or cargo onboard the captain can scuttle the ship or if the ship has an auto destruct I don't think the capatian should go down with his ship.

Wow... I knew they were suppose to go down with their ship... But I thought they'd just be fired and looked down upon and looked at as a coward... I didn't know they was breaking the LAW... Hmmm... Francesco got 16 years I believe... IDK if I think he should do THAT long... I mean you NEVER know how you'll react in a situation that your facing life or death... And the want and will to survive and live during something as scary as that could definitely impact your actions, your thinking process and what you do... I don't think the punishment should be so harsh because your basically telling that man he has to willingly go drown himself and in a situation like that ALL KINDS of things come into play that could greatly influence your decisions to the point that you do things you wouldn't normally do... Yes, I think it's wrong But put yourself in their shoes... Your mind would NOT think straight guaranteed...

The captain should stay on the ship and manage the resuce untill all his passengers are off safely or untill his assistance is no longer needed. The captain has a duty of care to all his passengers and should remain on the ship until everyone is accounted for but If someone is trapped inside a sinking ship the captain should stay on the ship to assist in resuce unless he/she is getting in the way of rescuers and has been ask to leave.

Yeah, this phrase is misleading. It doesn't mean the captain _must_ go down with the ship. It simply means the captain bears ultimate responsibility for the safety of the crew and passengers of his vessel in the event of an evacuation. Once all crew and passengers are accounted for (whether rescued or counted as lost), the captain can (and should) abandon ship for his/her own safety. There's no need to go down with the ship when rescue efforts are completed.

Captain should remain calm not wear a safety vest and assist to evacuation of everyone, if the captain is still on the ship when it goes down not everyone made it off. Not wearing a floating vest it will ease passengers minds and help to keep them calm.

TBF, in America if a captain abandoned his ship. The courts would likely put manslaughter charges on them for every dead passenger. Meaning they'd likely spend the rest of their life in jail.

They arent required to go down per se, they are required to ensure the crews and passengers safety. If there is room for 8 and he makes 9 its presumed he doesn't get on the first escape boat. He must be the first and last man on that ship. Being at sea is like being on your own little island in a big place with varied laws. Captains are given the utmost respect and mutiny or things of that nature are treated so harshly because of the precarious nature at being.at sea. A little mistake on land is q big one at sea. Trusting that the captain will lay his life down if need be is part of the respect sent their way.
