At 1:20, the object is a "lining pen" for use with india ink. The knob adjusts the width of the resultant line. It doesn't hold anything else -- surface tension holds the ink between the points. Pens like this were used by draftsmen through the 20th century, up until the advent of computers and CAD programs.

And there were a lot of "modern" replacement pens which were not prone to the problems the old style experienced.

Donald Bustell You are right, when I was at school, when you got a set of compasses, you got a pencil nib and an ink nib like that. You can stil buy them, search for Aristo compasses or drawing set.

I am pretty sure there was one just like that in my Granddad's navigational instruments.

Yep, we used compasses like that at school, with an ink bottle. Came here to say this and now I feel so old.

Indeed. I have used a lining pen (badly) and had a drawing set with some in it but lost track of them many years ago

The compass does not use a goose feather. The ink just 'sits' in the gap. This type of pen/compass was still a popular drawing tool for technical drawings, till at least the 70'ies. Other than that, an other great video from the Brady team.

Only at the Royal Society could one, upon completing cataloging 40 years of images, choose an exquisite drawing of a rat’s testicle as one’s favorite image.

The drawing end of the compasses does not hold a quill! It is an adjustable nib - by tightening or loosening the screw you can adjust the thickness of the line. These are still used - I've used them many times.

My Granddad owned a parallel ruler exactly like that. It looks exactly the same. He was a navigator in the RAF in the 30s and 40s.

It's exciting to see these tools of the trade from the 17th century! I won't comment on the ruling pen as others have done that already. However, I will say that the diagram at 2:10 looks to be depicting an elliptical orbit and is not a "mucked up" circle.
@markholm7050

RealSpaceModels And, though many know it already, a compass can not draw an ellipse. There is a trick with string and two pins. Looks like this one was just freehanded.

I've actually got a micro film copy of the Gregorii Notae - a wonderful insight into contemporary understanding of the Principia. And has never been published and til now been very little studied. And if anyone is interested how that sundial works, small cheap replicas they can be found online if you search for "pocket sundial". The lanyard ring rotates around the circumference of the dial. Using gradations, the ring is set to the current latitude. Then the main vertical ring is aligned north-south. The small piece with a hole in it (2:45) moves on the crossbar and is set to the current month. The time is then read from where the point of light coming from the sun through the pinhole falls on the horizontal disk. In essence, by rotating the lanyard ring to the current latitude, then by aligning the vertical ring north-south you are creating a small model of the Earth, aligned in the same orientation. The sliding pinhole represents the varying height of the noon Sun throughout the year.

Indeed, the knob is used to adjust the thickness of the line drawn, not to hold a quill tip in place.

That letter plate was definitely my favourite object as I write a LOT of letters for my job, and how cool would it be to receive a beautifully printed letter (especially if it was to make you a fellow of the Royal Society)! Dr Fransen was really interesting, and that illustration was beautiful even if it was a rats testicle!

No need for goose feather, the narrow space would use surface tension to hold ink, and touching the paper would gradually let it deep out at the point of contact.

Anyone can visit the Royal Society and even request to see whatever you want. Even the Dutch ;P I just wouldn't know what to ask for though. It also seems a bit silly to give it back after just five minutes and go "yeah, that was nice". I'd feel bad if I didn't actually study it.
